Everyone and their fucking brother have cell phones these days, from adults all the way down to their fucking 10 year old kids. I'm a 20 year old male who's been living away from home since the age of 18, been paying rent and bills and apparently I CAN'T GET A CELL PHONE BECAUSE OF LACK OF CREDIT. I have a letter sitting here from my previous electric company saying that they'll gladly be a credit reference, with a rating of "EXCELLENT." How do these asshat 16 year olds get a fucking cell phone and I don't? I've discovered that AT&T has the most bang for the buck and I would like to get a cell under their service. They try to hock their shitty Go Phone to those without credit, when it costs almost twice as much for the same features. Is there a way I can have the bill sent to me, but have my dad give his info for the credit check? My girlfriend said her dad co-signed for her first cell at 18 and AT&T says they don't do that...fucking pukes, what do I do?

If you dont want to go the pre-paid route the best bet is to get a phone added to someone's bill who already has one. A parent or sibling would be best and then you could pay the additional phone charge and all your charges to them. Good luck. |

I don't know if it's different here in Canada, but when I went to get mine the girl told me that because I didn't have a credit card I just had to put a $200 deposit on the account. I'm sure different companies have their own rules.

Yeah, AT&T wants...get this...a FUCKING EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLAR DEPOSIT. WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!?!? That's DOUBLE what it would cost me for the year of service.

Strange, they practically GIVE away AT&T cell phones here in NY, wait a minute...I DID get my cell phone for FREE! I guess they got too many 20 year olds not paying their cell bills wherever you live. AT&T have a deal if you get home service, and cell service at the same time from them...I think...I remember seeing several companies offering this, like Verizon, and MCI...did't they go bankrupt...I dunno. |

I'm trying to get one online, which has the best deal (300 minutes for $30). You would think they'd want another fucking customer, eh? I'm the one bending over and putting money in their pockets. I don't think T-Mobile is available in my area, and it looks like they're more expensive...plus AT&T has the best selection for free cell phones. Maybe I should just go down to the fucking store and either talk to one of the sales people or beat their SKULL IN.

That does seem weird. If you owe money, they shut you off. You pay up, back on. Weird. |

Back when I was trying to establish credit (beyond just utilities and landlord refs) I joined a credit union and got a credit card through them.
I just put most of my bills on there and made payments twice a month. About 6 months later everyone decided my credit was tops.
(That wasn't your question, though.)
Why is it urgent you have a cell-phone?

I just have a pay-as-you-go one, and buy £10 credit every so often (usually a month). |

See, my fucking credit union won't even give me a credit card...fucking CUNTS! Why urgent? We moved, have no land line, and don't plan on having a land line (waste of money), so we'll each need a cell.

Hehe...landlines can be lifesavers...my cell stopped working in the blackout, but my landline kept ringing off the hook...see, the cell towers had no power...but I did use the cell phone as a flashlight when walking in dark stairwells. |

Someone was telling me about five years ago that in some new suburban areas houses are being built without any land line capabilities because it would cost to run lines to said locations and all the people there have a dozen cell phones anyway. Every new house I've seen, though, still has a phone. Anyone had to go without?

I think new houses should be built with some sort of ability to boost cell phone signals from within. I wonder if it's possible...there should be at least some sort of antenna which you can plug your cell into which allows you to communicate more clearly from inside the house...that's the main problem with cells.

Quite possible, such a thing would probably run you around $400 CDN, though that's obviously a rough estimate. Some friends of mine designed something like that for 4th year design last year. Of course, such a device would emit a fair amount of EMR and would be, to use the technical term, a cancer magnet. :) But what isn't these days. |

There has to be a credit card company out there that will give you a card, perhaps with a terrible rate. But, the rate only matters if you don't pay off the balance.
First few weeks of school they are handing them out like candy on college campuses. |

I wonder if I could go down to the Penn State campus and get one...you think they'd check ID? But yeah, I've seen booths and stuff with cell phone deals and credit cards. That's smart: give credit cards to college students, who don't really have a lot of money in the first place.

Some of them may want to photocopy an ID, but you could either act like you don't have it on you or fess up and hope they give you a break. They may also ask for a co-signer. |

I wish someone would ask for a co-signer, that way I could have my dad help me out. How else am I going to establish credit without having credit established?
