I know that the re-releases are not remastered. I've known that for a long time, ever since Jo said so back in, like, March of this year on the Pixies newsgroup on Usenet. I even tried to warn my friend about purchasing the re-releases, but he was convinced they'd be remastered. He bought Trompe, and got pissed off. Anyway, the only place I know where you can find Pixies recordings that sound full and bombastic like they were supposed to is on the Death to the Pixies disc one. Now why were these remastered for that release? And it doesn't say anything about them being remastered on the packaging or liner notes for Death to the Pixies, but if you compare Planet of Sound from Trompe Le Monde to Planet of Sound from Death, there is a noticeable difference in how hard you get rocked. So Jo, what's the story, if you happen to know? |

I'm not aware of a remaster happening (this is WAY before my time! and Steve backcat also isn't sure), but it would have had its levels changed in some way, to keep it constant with the rest of the tracks on there....
sorry, thats vague isn't it.... ! |

i think it's because the planet of sound on death to the pixies is the single version, and like gigantic, the album and single versions were different. |

like i said, and touching on what jo said, they might not just change the volume but actually master all the tracks the same, its not exactly re-mastering, if they used the unmastered tapes to compile the album (or even if they didn't), they would master them all the same way on DTTP |

I'm pretty sure there was only one version of Planet of Sound. Someone has brought that up before, I've listened to the Death to and Trompe versions and they're exactly the same, save for the increased volume on Death to, which is logical enough considering all the tracks had to be at the same volume, which has just been mentioned anyway. |

Planet the single version sounds waaaaay better than the album version. Its more "dry". I dont like that flanger/chorusy shit on Black's vocal. |

Agreed. The version on Death to the Pixes sounds superior |

Hang on, is the Single version different to the Trompe album version? I was assuming you were refering to that, I've not heard the single version if it's different to the album version. |

That's because the albums are already on 4AD, so there is no need to re-release them. Thats all the US re-releases were. A change of label.
So buying the re-releases would be stupid if you already had the albums anyway. |

Actually Sheamus, PLANET OF SOUND single version IS the album version, just minus the effect on Black's vocals. I urge everyone (who owns the single) to listen both versions back to back...it's the same recording...just no space-jangled-pre-cher-effect. The DEATH TO THE PIXIES is very obviously remastered...and PLANET is so very very bitchen (and her car is) on said album.
