The folks at Harley-Davidson thought Tim McGraw, Kid Rock, and Elton John. Whooooooops!
I would have went with:
Steve Earle
ZZ Top
Neil Young
Since the artists were kept secret up til showtime, that only added to the dismay of an audience that was fed rumours all week about who was going to play. Stones? U2? Eagles? Aerosmith? all were suspected to be in town depending who you talked to. I'd bet FB&TC'S would have went over better than McGraw, who started clearing the grounds as soon as he stepped on stage. Kid Rock fared little better. When Elton came on the event completely ran out of juice. The folks who like him were treated to a good show, but there was plenty of booing by the Bikers as the bailed out to the bars. Even with all that going on, there were a total of 6 arrests, astounding for an event of this size regardless of the make-up of the crowd.

Elton John? For bikers?
You gotta put some ACDC in there, maybe some Metallica.

Steve Earle and his american taliban song may not be too popular with bikers (though more popular than Elton John).

Neil Young with Crazy Horse would have rocked the place.

I thought Skynyrd became one of those bands that started just hiring new people to fill in for their dearly departed. I thought I heard something about them playing shows last year.

Nothing is ever something.

Sure lots of them are dead, but that doesnt stop the survivors and kin (lead singer is a Van Zandt) from touring and collecting checks.

Last I heard they released a REALLY REALLY bad pro-Iraq War song. Or maybe it was a 9-11 song. I cant recall what the position was, but, it was terrible and only being played on the radio to make fun of the song.

How often do two posts (like the ones above) come in at the same time down to the second? Just thought it was kinda cool, probably wouldn't have noticed if one of them wasn't mine.

If it was like a lollapalooza for bikers, and you could pick anybody, living or dead, to play, that'd be the shit. The Doors would be there, for starters, playing songs from "Morrison Hotel" era. (Those are alot more cock-rock than their early, acid-induced music.) I bet the more music-concious biker might appreciate some older Johnny Cash, like that song where he talks about shooting a man in Reno "...just to watch him die." (I can't remember the name.) Lynyrd Skynyrd would play "Free Bird," and all the bikers would hold their manly, hoary biker women close and hold up lighters...Later, ZZ Top would play, to which the bikers would start a mosh pit of sorts...not near as violent as some of the ones at heavy concerts today, but one appropriate to accomodate a modicum of safety for many of the biker's considerable weights. The Steve Miller Band would rouse things up a bit with "Space Cowboy" and Fleetwood Mac would balance out the mix and provide the biker women as much enjoyment as the men.

Okay, coming back down now. Sometimes I get into this mode where I can just visualize a certain scene in my mind very vividly...believe it or not, I don't use drugs anymore.

I'd book Justin Timberlake and Backstreet Boys, then stand back and enjoy the... result.

Gone Jackals? Didn't they do the music for "Full Throttle" ?

The organisers could have done no wrong booking Steppenwolf.

They did indeed, Mr. Scott. Loved that soundtrack; it was such an integral part of Full Throttle.

Yeah, Maiden would be sweet. However, I think Motorhead might be the ultimate biker band based upon the opinions of some of the oldtime crotch fiends with whom I've conversed. Based upon my highly scientific research of these conversations, this is the band (and Lemmy's the man) that they all held up on another plane - even above that sacred Metallicow. Of course, this could just be some kind of idiosyncratic fan base, seeing as they're mostly by buddy's dad's friends, but I dunno...Motorhead kicks ass.

By the way, glacial906: "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die," is from Folsom Prison Blues, one of my dearly departed grandfather's favourite songs in the world.

Nothing is ever something.

True, Earle may not connect with many of Harley's recent corporate clientele, but the "Real" bikers could not care less about being PC. Most of them can relate to all the shit Earle's been thru as opposed to the insipiration behind Tim McGraw's sappy crooning.
Speaking of crooning, Lemmy and the boys would indeed have been another fine choice....

Motorhead have to be the first choice really, I'dagree with you boys. I can'tunderstand why Elton John played, he'snot the type of guy that bikers are into,or it doesn't seem that way. To me it seems like when Extreme played Donington, only to have shitloads of bottles of piss threw at them, before getting pretty much booed off stage.

That's from Deep Purple's "Highway Star" They're still around, minus Ritchie Blackmore....

I can't imagine having to play after Sepultura AND Pantera unless I felt suicidal...thats brutal.

I thought it was Deep Purple but I wasn't sure so I didn't want to say lest I look stupid. I love that song, cmon Deep Purple would be perfect, they got shit like Space Truckin and Sweet Child in Time.
