My review, that is...the album definitely doesn't...

Thoughts? I didn't want to mention the Pixies at all, but the editor wanted me to...at least it isn't "Pixies this, Pixies that, oh, and by the way, Frank Black sucks because he isn't the Pixies..." etc.

A very good and thoughtful review - thanks Ben. I think it's fair enough to mention the Pixies, as you say it is when the entire review is about the Pixies and a possible reunion that the yawns start.

nice review, a little tough on DW and BLD. People seem to underestimate how hard it is to put together 10 decent songs let alone 20 something. |

Show Me Your Tears Frank Black & the Catholics are back with their sixth CD
By BEN CHRONEOS Cardinal Staff Writer bchroneos@louisvillecardinal.com
September 02, 2003
Even the greatest musicians can be limited by their favored style. However, when one can vary in many ways, it speaks volumes to their skill. Frank Black has exhibited this kind of versatility over his 17-year career, influencing Nirvana with the loud cacophonous alternative rock of the Pixies before moving on to his solo efforts of straight rock and acoustic folk styles. For his ninth record in 10 years, Frank Black presents what he calls "thirteen big, salty tears; like thirteen little black dogs just born, still in their sacs, about to wake up, ready to howl at the world." A much more personal album than usual, Show Me Your Tears reflects his recent divorce and foray into therapy, adding a greater sincerity to his current alt.country phase.
Show Me Your Tears opens with "Nadine," a rocker unlike anything found in his previous six albums. The album goes on a streak of seven impressive tracks including "Jaina Blues," a Stonesy narration of the four Bhavnas of Jainism, the honky-tonk "Horrible Day and Massif Centrale," a song reminiscent of his work on Teenager of the Year.
Unfortunately, no album can be expected to maintain a streak of 13 equally impressive tracks. Show Me Your Tears begins to lose steam after "Massif Centrale," but the latter half is not without its highlights. Instruments previously not found in Black's albums are featured, such as a horn section in "The Snake" and "Manitoba." Contributors include Van Dyke Parks--known by many for his contributions to Brian Wilson's abandoned Smile project--plays piano and accordion, while Joey Santiago returns to contribute guitar work.
Black continues to prove that modern recording technology isn't essential, or even the best choice. All six albums with his backup band The Catholics have been recorded live to two-track, sounding as good as the average studio record. Adding to that, Show Me Your Tears does this without edits. By restricting themselves to simple production, they leave more of the quality to musicianship, tending to give the album energy, like that of a live show.
This album is a big step up from last year's double release of Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop, some of which sounded like runoff from Dog in the Sand. Show Me Your Tears has a fresh and dynamic sound throughout, putting it in the ranks of Dog in the Sand and Teenager of the Year as one of Frank Black's best. Show Me Your Tears is available on September 9th on the spinART label.

BLD and DW have their good parts, imo, just not as consistent throughout, especially compared to DitS and SMYT.
