He mentions about smoking joints occasionally in his songs.... Gouge away, Pan American Highway. Although I read in a decent British music mag that he rarely smokes and drinks. To add to the unfolding mystery, if you read the inside cover of The Black Sessions, Frank has written a little bit saying that he got together with Joey to thrash out two bootleg quality recordings (Jumping Beans, Modern Age) and that they both sat around smoking cigars during the recording.... |

If you count all the second-hand smoke he inhales from Dave P, then yes! Haha, just trying to be silly .

I've read that he enjoys smoking weed, but said it doesn't make him more artistic. He said he usually forgets to write down what he was thinking while high. This was in some Pixies interview circa '91.
I'm digging for fire. |

Is anyone here a lead singer? it'd be interesting what your take is on smoking- i think Kurt used to say the weed helped him hit the high notes, and in my experience that's true on the night you smoke, but your vocal cords are knackered for weeks afterwards though
and on drinking... there's this theory that anything that dehydrates you e.g. alcohol, caffeine is supposed to dehydrate your larynx also, do you all find that happens?

certainly not Bob Pollard of GBV, he drinks 20 beers a show, and just gets better and better with each beer. |

I used to take singing lessons and I was told that too much drink and smoke fucks your voice up.... I guess beer is o.k. unless you drinking a stupid amount before you sing (and then you just sound pissed), but whiskey is supposed to be really bad. Look at Jim Morrisons voice on LA Woman, on some of the songs his voice sounds fucked, which is probably a combination of drugs and booze. I guess it kind of suits that album but you could tell that his voice was in a bad shape towards the end of his life from 'enjoying' himself a little too much.
I read that Juliana Hatfield actually started smoking so that her voice got rougher and sounded less virgin-like... so I reckon that it depends on the style you want to sing and how you want to come across. But all in all I'd say that Shane McGowan is a good example of how smoke and alcohol effect your singing. |

Tom Waits then, they say he got his voice from chain-smoking and drinking whiskey. Oh, I also found Pixies-Frank saying:
'The Pixies mingle with the stars - R.E.M. watch our show from the side of the stage and have dinner with us. Then The Pixies give their lungs a break from that harsh English hash and pump some good ol' green bud. Sometimes Dutch socialism frickin' rules.' |

Ah. Like a vocal image? :)
I think Kim Deal has hoarse-voice genes. |
