Hi everyone, I'm helping out with the web-site by compiling information regarding the FB&TC's members past & present. So, if any of you would like to tell us what you know about any of the catholics or Frank, feel free to chime in here. I'm sure many of you know tidbits here and there about your favorite catholic, and we'd love to include it in our info. Thanks in advance!

Ok, so I'll start the ball rolling to give you an idea of info that we're looking for:
Dave Philips is originally from Athens, Georgia. Before joining FB&TC's, he was a co-founder of "Jack Logan and Liquor Cabinet", where his credits include writing, lead guitar, and vocals. Other credits include working with Tommy Stinson in his post-Replacements band "Perfect", and with Tom Waits.
Oh gosh, Dave, I hope I have this all correct. I know there is so much more to add. Feel free to correct me if needed!
-Zan P.S. would love it if Frank and Harris would chime in about themselves and the other guys. Thanks so much!!

Yeah I always figured they were because I read that Polaris was formed with people from Miracle Legion, which Dave and Scott were in I believe |

Woah, no way...Scott and Dave were from Polaris, the Pete and Pete band? I love that show...it's great...holy crap, that means they'd be in the beginning of the show when they show the band playing. Woah! For those who have Comcast digital cable, Pete and Pete is still on the Noggin/The N channel. |

I know that Rich Gilbert played for the Zulus in the late 80s and early 90s. this was really a great band. when they opened for the pixies in 89 in montreal i was really impressed. thankfully i had already picked up their album in boston that summer. now, it most probable that rich gilbert also played for Human Sexual Response, which was later to become the Zulus. another great band with lots of wierd and funny songs. apparently the inspiration for their song Jackie Onassis goes back to when she was in boston shopping at filene's basement. one of the band members worked there and was asked to get a pair of shoes she wanted to try on. as the story goes, at least the version i've heard, he gave them a good licking before letting her give them a go. |

Well what can one say about Mr. Eric Drew Feldman? Somehow Eric Feldman has been making "avant garde" music for more than twenty five years. He ,and fellow Frank Black coloborator Morris Tepper, joined Captain Beefheart's Magic band in 1977 as the bass/ keyboard player, for three studio albums. For a rather complete list of Mr. Feldman's work over the past three decades direct your broswer to http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=SEARCH&sql=R75478#APPEAR for good interview use this url http://members.lycos.nl/teejo/argue/ericsaga.html I for one am extremely glad to see Mr. Feldman back in the mix with the last few albums and tours. But what happened to Rich Gilbert? He does not play on the Devil's Workshop and he was not touring with group the last time they came through town. I am a big fan of Rich Gilbert's guitar work and I was wondering if he was still around.

I am also glad that Eric is back - but I'm a great Beefheart fan (so is Frank, I believe).
Did Frank not say that Rich Gilbert had another engagement at the time they recorded Devil's Workshop (?Tanya Donnelly) but that he would be back? |

Yes, I believe Frank did confirm that Rich had a prior committment and couldn't do the DW tracks. Frank also emphasized that it wasn't a big deal, and that Rich was still part of the line-up, etc etc. I think Rich joined them on the latest recording that they did in August.
I have a Rich Gilbert CD around here somewhere, have to dig that out, because I can't even remember what it is called, etc. But I picked it up at the Trocodero show last April, and I think it is/was a new band of his.

Rich Gilberts Band 'The Coronet Premiers' on Lunch Records. Really weird Indie music, with (sadly) drum computers and synths.

Don't know from what far-away Super-Guitarist planet he came from, but I do know that Lyle Workman has been playing with Beck since he left Frank. Seen him on Leno one time. |

Dave Philips and Moris Tepper have both played on various Tom Waits albums. That's pretty cool if you ask me.

Hey Zanni,
I started a thread about Rich Gilbert which now resides on page 4 of this forum.
I got his sig. but failed to meet the guy when he toured with Tanya D. earlier this year, and just wondered who else has even heard of Concussion Ensemble. I have an albumn of theirs Stampede which I highly recommend.
There's the usual thing about him being well known around the whole MA music scene & thats about all I can think of for now...

Hey Leah, thanks! You and everyone else have been so awesome at providing info. I truly appreciate it!
I never met Rich, but I've heard he's a really nice guy. I've met Frank, Dave P, Dave M, and Eric Drew Feldman. They are all super nice, but my fav has to be Dave P. He is just such a sweetie, and didn't seem to mind stopping to chat for a few minutes after a show. But seriously, they're all really great guys.
Thanks again to everyone for all the help. We should have those bio-pages for the guys up soon. Keep the info coming, I'm constantly checking in for more as I write each one up.

Perhaps you're already onto this, but Rich shows up on some early Throwing Muses material. I forget if it's one (or both) of the first two albums or the early EPs, but within the context of his recent work with Tanya D, it was interesting to see he's basically a charter member of the Boston/4AD "Subbacultcha" family. - Mel |

i've been lucky enough to meet everyone except Dave M. and Scott.. but i totally agree about Dave P. i usually end up talking to him at some point at every show i see (since i always bug him).. and he's always cool. i feel special that i've been elevated to recognizable, annoying Frank Black fan.. it would be cool to see them on the East Coast and totally freak them out.. "hey guys.. i'm going on tour with you.. EVERYWHERE!"..
so what Tom Waits CD's does Dave P. play on?
Floop
also, while we're at it.. maybe it's time to solve the "where was Frank born?" issue. a while back, there was heated discussion about this on another list.. (involving theories about the St. Elizabeth's [hospital?] in Pan Am Highway).. i still believe that he was born in Long Beach, CA 1965.. anyone got valid information to prove otherwise? |

Haha, ok, and I'll show up at a show on the West Coast. I would love to follow them around!! Wasn't there a guy who once spent his vacation following them on one of the tours??
The only Tom Waits CD I've found Dave on is Bone Machine from 1992. He plays guitar and pedal steel guitar on it. I can't find him on any others. But feel free to correct me, perhaps I missed something.
Zan P.S. I highly recommend the Jack Logan stuff, it's very cool lo-fi.

I think we should all apply for jobs with Frank as roadies! Actually, I'd do it for free. But I'm sure the last thing they want is a woman on the road with them!

Once again, thanks for the info. Especially this obscure stuff on Rich. Sometimes it is difficult to verify if someone you are 'searching' is the exact person! There are a few Rich Gilbert's out there, as well as Dave Philips', believe it or not.

Alls I can say is holy wow! Dave P really played on Bone Machine? For me that is the best record by one of the best music guys there ever was. No wonder he ended up a Catholic. I mean truly, even Frank should feel forunate. I dunno. I guess I kind of equate it to being one of the "journeyman"-type musicians playing on After the Goldrush or something. By the way, I guess the reason I was convinced it was 'our Dave' was because his name is spelled wrong everywhere! I mean, even on one of the Jack Logan CD's he's credited as David PhiLLips, for heavens sake, and I'm damn sure he played with Jack!
So who is this 'other' Dave PhiLLips who plays guitar and pedal steel then???
Just curious!
Thanks again Harris, tell Dave I said hello. We met in Chicago in April, he may remember...

Harris, question for you:
On the Miracle Legion album "Drenched", the drummer credited is "Spot". Is that you? Just wondering, 'cause God forbid I screw up another bio, ya know??!! I'm gonna get fired...
Thanks, Zan
