A short Pixies-obsessed review by Eileen Dick - but she gave SMYT four stars out of five. The link is: http://www.timeoff.com.au/archive/1136/reviews/
But I have copied it below:
Frank Black describes his third full-length release this year as “13 big, salty tears… there isn’t a happy song in this bunch”.
That may be so, but there’s something here for every fan: Pixies-style rock (‘Nadine’, ‘The Snake’), rolling country rock laced with slide and shimmering piano (‘My Favourite Kiss’, ‘Horrible Day’, ‘Goodbye Lorraine’, ‘The Old Heartache’), blues (‘Jaina Blues’), swampy rock (the very Dylanesque ‘New House Of The Pope’) and acoustic country-folk (‘Coastline’, ‘Manitoba’).
Those holding out for a Pixies reunion will be delighted to know that Show Me Your Tears features a guest appearance by axeman Joey Santiago, along with noir-pop maestro Stan Ridgway and piano men Eric Drew Feldman and Van Dyke Parks.
Also, a review of Everything is New from the same site:
Mr. Pixie himself returns to the recorded stage with the first single from his forthcoming album Show Me Your Tears and shows, once again, why he has proven such an influential artist to some of the biggest acts. ‘Everything Is New’ is a gorgeous number with a night-before/morning after vibe that supports Black’s narrative perfectly. Partnered with his takes on ‘Take What You Want’ (in full southern evangelist robes) and the fine Jagger/Richards tune ‘Down In The Hole’ (busking for cigarettes style) this makes for a revitalising release.
