I have heard SMYT twice through (from internet) and feel it may be Frank's best album to date...although it seems his two-track method may be getting too small for the new big sound he's after. Any one agree or disagree? GAY input is as important here as STRAIGHT or BI input. BLACK and ASIAN too! (Even E.B.'s too! )

I'm not gay but I play one on TV.
Anyway, I agree that SMYT is the best one yet....however, I disagree that the 2 track method is not right for the big sound.
The beauty is the ability to MIX all that stuff and the fact that that is all played LIVE never ever ever gets old to me. It amazes me each and every time I hear any of those albums.
@ track doesn't limit or minimalize the sound. Each instrument still has it's own channel and needs to be properly micd and what not.
It's basically NO different than multitracking at all except for the fact that there are no overdubs. 2 tracks simply means that it's played live and recorded on a left and right channel to make stereo and that's all.
Multitracks are eventually mixed down to 2 tracks as it is, so essentially there is no difference.
This is a beautiful beautiful wonderful album. |

Dear friend_in_Frank: well isee that people hre rends to divide better than unite, there are few universal things anda many peolple are here because frank is one of them. note i write from spain, think in my musical background, and i can tell you that i feel frank very near from the first time i listened to his music. well alsoi think that in the middle of the motto grosso in brasil a canibal tribe is dancing the manta ray, and if Sting dare to go there can end into the tribes pot for dinner, i think frank there wont have the same problem, considering than the rations would be obviously larger. jokes apart i see here many references to sex and even some perversions isnt it universal?

I agree swimmer...the 'live' aspect is always beautiful and fully engaging. I'm just concerned with the fact the way he's going (more and more instruments) he won't find a big enough space to record it all in one take! I LOVE the live to two track. I just hope if he continues to broaden, maybe he should consider multi-tracking again...only because it becomes dangerously muddy if not done just right. This muddiness, or rawness rather, is a perfect attribute to say DW or BLD...but SMYT is new and has a fragility winding through it...but it also sounds cramped. I'm sure my earview will chang once I actually have the album...I CANT WAIT! It is beautiful.

I can't account for SMYT because UNLIKE YOU PIRATES (haha!), I'm waiting till it's released. But I have to say that live-to-2 track is a brilliant way to go. It takes so much more skill and focus to pull it off, and when it's pulled off, you get a much more true performance. Catching the band playing live is the real thing. I believe he said he'd rather capture the performance (via 2track) rather than make a facimile (via multitracking), and that is so true. Keep in mind that multitracking at one point wasn't an option in the world of music...Pet Sounds (greatest album ever recorded), although there was a lot of bouncing and somewhat multitrack going, was done generally live...you'd have the band play live, then the vocals were done live, then maybe some overdubs or something. But yeah...live is where it's at, it just takes skill.

El Barto......you havent even heard it yet?....hats off to your willpower. I downloaded it, but when it comes out, i will buy 5 copies to keep 2 and peddle others to friends....that's how i can rationalize listening to it in advance...besides, everytime they come to town i go for free so, i feel i have to put in extra support. |

I still haven't heard SMYT, but my stomach begins to hurt... 2 more weeks before it's released and I really don't know how I'll survive. I'm starting to have FB-related dreams on a daily basis.

What is this topic about, really? :) If itīs about live recording of music I would have to say that this kind of thing takes a lot of rehersal. My band will be recording some stuff this fall and we have access to a big rehersal room with a nice ambience. We have talked about trying to record the songs live, but we will have to figure out how to minimize the instruments (bass, drums, two guitars and vocals) from leaking into each other. I would love to know how FB and the Cīs set up the recording of, letīs say SMYT, but no topic ever talks about this. Maybe we can start a little live recording topic, Iīm sure a lot of people would love to talk about this. |

As a bisexual eskimo accountant / ice sculptor, I am holding out till the release date. Mostly due to inadequacy of my internet capabilities, but also for all those other, more altruistic reasons. Is it killing anyone else that hasn't heard it to be hearing so much about it?

Yes, yes. It's killing me. But, it is like waiting for Christmas. I know that it will be that much sweeter when I actually hear the music.

Ever the voice of opposition, I do not think SMYT is Frank's best. Not by a longshot. If you've never heard Teenager of the Year or the self-titled solo debut, give them a listen, you may change your mind. Kidding aside, SMYT takes the country-rock sound, used in a wonderfully subtle way on DITS, and invests heavily in it, giving rise to alienation of die-hard fans: namely me.
Frank Black's best asset is his unique songwriting. Casual listeners and fans alike are required to devote an effort not normally used when listening to music. You could tell a FB song by it's unique structure (Pure Denizen of the Citizen's Band, I've Seen Your Picture), it's off-kilter melody (Headache), it's incredible chord/key changes (The Swimmer), and of course, the lyrics with all the 10-cent words and acrostics.
Fans like me want the bar consistently raised. With each new release, I felt prepared to devour the tracks with the same voracious intellectual appetite I'd become accustomed to. DITS, the best of the "2-track" releases hits home hard, with powerful songs like Robert Onion, Bullet, and the unforgettable The Swimmer. However, BLD, DW, and now SMYT left me hungry still. SMYT begins where BLD and DW left off; basically a continuation of the same country-rock style but without the in-your-face songwriting that I've come to expect of FB.
I'll still purchase SMYT because I admire FB as an artist and I am still a fan, after all.

Wish it were otherwise, but I agree with you, cvanepps. I will not criticize Frank, but judging from recent releases there is a new FB idiom and it doesn't have all the elements that made me a fan originally. (There's still plenty to like, though.)

There used to be a certain whimsy and surrealism to FB's music that was what originally attracted me to it in the first place. Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop (I'm not too familiar with DITS, although I like what I've heard) didn't seem to have that, although, like nekom says about SMYT, there is still plenty to like. To me, it was equally enjoyable in a new way that I didn't know Frank was capable of. But, I also don't think that FB&TC's debut album (the one with six-sixty-six and i need peace) was up to par with the first two, self titled and TOTY. I think with BLD he's hit the pinnacle of whatever new direction he's embarked on...BLD was like him trying the "waters" of the blues/country inspired theme, and SMYT sounds like the full-on dive. Let's just hope that, in this attempt to embark on a new musical road, he doesn't lose that which makes him Frank.

I enjoy SMYT, but agree that it would be interesting to see what Frank could come up with if he decided to do something new/different/experimental.
Of course, he should and will always do whatever he pleases. I'm just speculating. |

honestly i'm a BIG fan of the first FB&C album, where it all started. it sounds so raw and muddy at times, with heavy compression on the final mix. no wonder they ended up releasing it as an album, not just a demo. actually, i'm hoping SMYT is recorded a bit more raw. can't wait!

oh yeah, i also like that song on the first FB&C, "I gotta move" about Peter Radiator "getting bashed". Frank even made a pro-gay comment about it when i saw him in Philadelphia in 2001. Rawk ON Frank, for the gay folk! there. that's my $.02 of gay friendliness. almost fogot.
