After reading some posts and that blasphemous survivor stuff, I feel I must educate you all on the best (and often overlooked) Pixies songs.
Surfer Rosa ----------- Of course Where Is My Mind and River Euphrates are good (the latter actually only grew on me after hearing B-sides), but also top notch if not better, are Oh My Golly!, which has the most energy I've ever heard in a song (impossible to listen to on low volume), I'm Amazed!, which also has energy and a very ballzy intro, and Brick Is Red, which I love because of the cool instrumental to vocal transition (besides the fact that it's a kickin rad song.)
Doolittle ----------- First of all, I'd like to say that Debaser is HIGHLY overrated, and probably their worst song, behind Silver maybe. However, the rest of the cd wins with I Bleed, (great lyrics, great drum part, great bass, everything), Mr. Grieves, which shows off one of the Pixies great abilities (tempo changes), and finally, one of the greatests songs ever recorded, La La Love You. Cmon people, It has the greatest transition. It starts off with a fast, focused drum beat and a guitar that's about to recount some strange tale of woe, when suddenly, it throws all seriousness out the window and starts whistling about love. Perfect.
Bossanova --------- I think this cd highlights another one of their great strengths: outro-ing a record. You can debate most songs all you want about why they are better or what not (I'm guilty), but you simply CAN NOT deny that Stormy Weather and Havalina do their job perfectly, which is to cap off some great mind blowing songs with simple melodies that emphasize the preceding aural experience. Besides them, my favorites are: All Over The World, which is so haunting...gets me every time. and...bascially the rest of the cd, so I won't bother listing them all. I don't particularly like Down To The Well though.
Trompe Le Monde --------------- I'm a big fan of all the high energy songs that start the cd, especially The Sad Punk, for the aforementioned brilliant tempo changes, and also the lyrics. I think Palace Of The Brine is a neat little ditty, and Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons is actually pretty revolutionary in my opinion, as it doesn't follow the typical intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus type structure of most rock/pop songs. Plus it has a sort of surreal quality in it I really enjoy. The Navajo Know is another big favorite of mine. If you think about it, the first half of the album was full of layers and layers of sound, and after gradually declining, it ends with with this really sparse surreal type song that I think really caps of the record well. I think alot of my friends that don't understand the Pixies just don't get the complexity in alot of their songs (Trompe Le Monde), but then again, they can very nicely pull off something blissfully simple like The Navajo Know.
I'm out, please comment/argue, and that whole pretentious thing at the beginning was a joke...there are no bad Pixies fans. =)
Oh, and any songs I left out I probably love but didn't feel the need to comment on (Come On Pilgrim)...I've been typing too goddamn much anyway.
All I'm saying, pretty baby... La la love you, don't mean maybe. |

Debaser overrated? Well it still kicks serious ass on full volume! Some interesting thoughts there. No doubt you'll have started a war.

"I think alot of my friends that don't understand the Pixies just don't get the complexity in alot of their songs"
Me too, ive tried for ages to get people to listen to them, they just think what i thought when i first heard them "too noisy, too screamy, pixies??" But i always get the "well i like that song 'where is my mind?' aka 'the fight club song'.
But at the end of the day they're the ones who've lost out! No other band comes close to the complexity of the pixies, i thought id eventually get bored of them, but i havent yet. |

I actually found the pixies after I heard 'that Fight Club song', but after that, I hopped on Napster, dled Alec Eiffel (another favorite to this day) and some others and I was hooked. This is the part the RIAA seems to miss. I originally did something illegal, then proceded to pour close to 70$ into the indrustry for their cd's, which I never would have bought if not for Napster. Oh well. |

When I first heard Surfer Rosa (my first Pixies listening experience), I thought "Bone Machine" was a pretty decent, but still an average song. I think "Break My Body" was the first Pixies song to really catch my attention (especially since Fight Club wasn't my favorite movie, making "Where Is My Mind?" easily overlooked at the time). But I'll argue that the two best songs on the album are "River Euphrates" (for the amazing vocal harmonization) and "Cactus" for the awesome lyrics and overall mood of the song.
(Favorite COP song-- "The Holiday Song" Great energy throughout the entire song.)
Doolittle-- I also STRONGLY disagree with you about "Debaser". To me, its one of those songs that you know is good when you first hear it, but the more familiar you become with it, the more you begin to actually love it. I recently tried to get this one guy I worked with (who was near 40yrs. old) into the Pixies. Most of it was maybe a tad loud for his ears, but he did tell me that the more he listened to "Debaser", the more he liked it. "La La Love You" was also one of my favorites, and I remembered thinking to myself, "if Black Francis is singing this song, he has the most versatile voice ever". Well, I still think he does anyways, but this song really added a nice change-up after hearing torrid songs like "Mr. Grieves" and "Crackity Jones". My favorite Pixies album, also.
Bossanova-- Personally, I like "Is She Weird?" and "All Over The World" the best. But I love the last two songs as well. The whole album had a nice style change from their previous works. Perfect direction for them to go.
Trompe Le Monde-- Yeah, the song "Trompe Le Monde" has many layers (or sounds that way) to it. So does "Alec Eiffel". But my personal favorites on this one are "The Sad Punk" (which also has exceptional lyrics to me) and "U-Mass", just because its fun to me. My second favorite Pixies' album.
Yeah, talking about Pixies...endless fun.

I'd have to agree about Debaser, it's one of my least fave Pixies songs, and like WIMM it's very overrated.
All of the Pixies Studio albums are very special, I have had them for a long time and I never get bored of listening to them.
Bacon....... Its not fantastic |

the first song that caught me was La La Love You cause i felt that any band that had the humor and playfulness to create that had credibility in the darker rougher areas. the first song i learned on guitar was Brick is red, if you don't get it you never will. Oh My Golly! is unbelievably confident. |
