Do any of you ever question your own subjective opinion of frank black when you hear an outsider's review?

Is that why everyone attacks a negative review so bad?

well, since FB fans are by definition the most intelligent, knowledgable and articulate connesoirs of music, films, food and the universe, the question is not worth asking :-)

Negative review = In this reviewer's opinion, I feel the album is not very good because the songs are not well structured, the playing is deplorable and sloppy but not in a "good sloppy" way, and the cover looks like it was thrown together with a minimal budget and a minimal care for quality.

DUMBASS REVIEW - PORKY ROCKER, Frank "I stuff my face because of all my insecurities about not being as LOVED as the Pixies" Black took time out of eating to take a crap in the studio he calls "Show Me Your Tears." NIRVANA who owe everything to The Pixies for teaching Kurt how to play guitar and write a loud-soft-loud song recently returned from the dead and had this to say..."It's not the Pixies" and then immediately blew his face off AGAIN with a shotgun. Pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies pixies Frank is a fat ass who wasted this crtic "who speaks with the mouth of Zeuss" time. All of you readers know that I haven't even KISSED a girl since 1992 which, coincidentally was the last year that THE PIXIES produced an album. And by the way, Frank is a fat guy isn't he?

So what I am saying is YES I AM GONNA ATTACK SOMEONE WHO DOES A SHITTY REVIEW LIKE THAT. And fuck you if you think that I am attacking some innocent fuck just cuz I get off on it.

The worst review of FB I ever read was Spin's review of Cult of Ray. I wish I could find it because it was a classic example of shit writing. It basically said nothing about the album's contents and went on to call Frank a "pigfuck"!

Yeah, that sounds pretty awful. When you've got so little tact that your personal biases come out in your review, and then are accepted by your editor, that's sad.

I only read reviews before I hear the album. I know I will like the album (as a result of FB making it) so all I need to here is how good it is. If you tell me it is bad, you must be wrong. Certainly that is not completely rational/objective. However, we are fans, they are crtitiques. I would imagine they may be informative to people who take their word as objective truth. That may be slightly more irrational.

Well said, perhaps, I agree. About the best you can do is find a critic who seems to have similar tastes to yourself and go from there. Generally, moviewise, Ebert seems to mesh with me, but sweet mother of pearls, there are times when we disagree to the most hyperbolic proportions imaginable and then some.

Musicwise it's a little harder... I don't know how they assign reviews in places like Pitchfork or other music media, but it seems to be a different person reviewing all the time. Which is fine if, as you say, it was possible to be completely objective, but it's not.

In my September 9th review of SMYT I'm thinking about making part of the review on backstory, and maybe not even use the P-word, and if I do it may be to emphasize that they're 12 years dead, that the music now is different, but if you can't handle the fact that the same singer and writer can expand his horizons into many different realms, you have my pity.

review are stupid really because music is such a subjective thing. i work with women love mariah carey and suchlike and when i played them sonic youth they just couldn't believe that anyone would like it because it was "weired" and "just noise".
to be honest i don't think anyone who is really intersted in music cares about critics, especially ones who write for the nme who are sister fucking pigfucks.

I don't know that reviews are stupid (although there are stupid reviews)... I like hearing other's opinions on things, even if I don't necessarily like their opinion. But what's better than reading a great review of a great album by a great <and underappreciated> artist? Not much. Sometimes they have some insights that (at least for me) I don't, or know a bit more of the story thanks to research. And sometimes they pop it in, give it a half-spin, and write about how they didn't get into it. Frustrating, but I think you can tell when a review is done that way.

Yeah, I wasnt trying to imply anything really.

Sometimes I cant let myself think with my brain... When I read a bad review of a band I obsess about it can kill my soul. Specially if I am high... every thing gets all projected and what not.

It is simply beyond my comprehension how reviewers can go on and on about the Pixies as if the Beatles never existed and then mercilessly pan most of Mr. T's solo albums. I'm almost forced to conclude that not only do these people not give more than one or two listens to any of the solo albums before putting pen to paper, but in fact don't know a thing about the Pixies other than what they have read in (stole from) similar publications.
