After reading lots of the posts I missed I feel compelled to quote Rodney King. What's the deal? There's assertive and then there are assholes. |

Yeah. Luckily the ratio is fairly decent on the forum, but there are definitely parties from both groups. |

i think this forum is better that most, frank black fans seem to keep a civilised tounge in their head. the sonic youth forum can be a scary place to be. |

the absolute worst are the forums over at hole.com. there are like thousands of people and all of them are assholes.

Yes! Self-censorship is much better than free speech. If Rodney King had known when to shut up, maybe the pigs wouldn't have beat him within an inch of his life. |

I suppose there's a time and a place for everything, and that was the point Chris was making, as opposed to nobody should be allowed to say anything. If you'll note, lots of people post lots of stupid stuff on this forum, probably myself included, but it is almost never deleted by the powers that be. That's free speech.
Freedom of speech doesn't preclude an inner monologue, however, nor good sense. Hence laws against promoting racism/hate crimes (which are sometimes taken too far, but that's a separate topic). It doesn't preclude the other person's rights of free speech. And it isn't license to become a total asshole and slam everyone and everything you don't agree with in the most rude manner possible because it gives you some sense of self-satisfaction to do so and further convinces you of your own perfections and elitist fantasies.
So don't play that card... that's not the issue.
NB I use the term 'you' figuratively, and not referring specifically or exclusively to BLT.

Care to elaborate. I can understand Ebb, he's vicious, but pray tell, what do I need censoring for?
Or are you upset over the whole Axel debacle?
Step right up.... |

-Maybe- there should be a prerequisite to being able to say "Can't we all just get along?!?" -Maybe- it should be that you have to drive around on the freeway, while on crank(!), endangering other peoples lives. Just a suggestion... They got a ranch they call, Number 51!

The only card I was attempting to play was the irony/sarcasm card. Frankly, I don't give a crap about Rodney King or the cops who beat him up. Neither are worth standing up for.
It's not that I particularly enjoy reading the posts of people like Ebb, but sometimes they're worth a chuckle. There will inevitably be people like him in a discussion group, so why resist? |

Think all oppinion and ideas are good on the site and regardless of the issues associated with these oppinions they are nonetheless important. Way back I use to get offended by Mirv and some of his rants but after a while some of the humour was rather good.
Also dissimulting US foreign policy surrounded by Canadians gets boring after a while... I am kidding. |

I suppose, but I feel bad for the people (especially when they're new) who are the target of these attacks. Doesn't really look good for the rest of us, either. |

I agree. But should we care? If posters have an absolute need to look dumb, i think most forum members will consider their posts irrellevant after a while. |

On the ohter hand, my answer is, Welcome to the Internet! It's fair to assume that on any board are the standard characters: the troller, the lurker, the asshole, the peacekeeper, the old denizen, etc. This place ain't no different.

Yeah, nevermind the Internet, that's reality I suppose, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. A person just expects a little more from supposedly intelligent people who must have some degree of intellect to appreciate FB's music and genius. Or, that said, more from a group of adults and teenagers to at least respond in an adult way. I suppose we could be resigned to mediocrity... |
