Dear Charles, I met you in Northampton years ago through Dave P. At the time I was 19 and I didn't say much, but over the years my admiration of your music has grown immensely and I have a lot to say. You are first of all, the most prolific songwriter who has ever lived - more than McCartney/Lennon or even Bob Dylan. This is not a statement by a zealous fan who has not done careful research either. I own every single album you have ever put out and each one is uniquely brilliant. Even Dylan was not consistent. He did some revolutionary albums at the beginning like Bob Dylan I, Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 and The Freewheelin'- but then he fell off the wagon somewhere. You, on the other hand, have continued to tweak your words and melodies around in such a way, that it always sounds fresh and prophetic. Now I will tell you my feelings about the Pixies. The reason why the Pixies will always be huge in people's minds is because they have a certain charm which captured the hearts of young kids all around the world. Even though it might be a little strange, there is something to be said for this kind of phenomenon. There is an irresistable chemistry between you and Kim, which is very unique and beautiful. Just think about the vocal harmonies in River Euphrates and Distance=RatexTime. Also there is the special relationship you had with Joey, back at school. The Pixies are special. The honest truth is, that when the Pixies get back together, you guys are going to be huge. But why not enjoy it? Haven't you paid your dues yet? Like I said before, I own all of the Catholics albums too. I love the pedal steel on Chip Away Boy and Lyle's screeching guitar on the first Catholics record. That shit is genius. But if the people want to hear the Pixies, is that so wrong? Music is first of all about the music, but secondly it's about the magic that you can give to the fans. The Pixies are the greatest band that ever were..... |

Frank doesn't really have a "beef" with teh Pixies anymore, if you'll notice. Nice letter, but Frank will gladly chat about Pixies in interviews now and play their songs live. Getting back together is hard I've noticed because it's never a black and white reaction. Look at Jane's Addiction, who were Pixies peers. It's not a disaster, their live show is getting nice reviews and their new album isn't a disgrace...but right down to the glitzy album cover, of all the members in airbrushed rock poses, it's clear that in time once the 2003 production dates itself the album is going to be a sore spot on their discography and be frowned upon. The same would most likely happen with the Pixies, and it does happen to nearly every band who reforms. |

Anybody who calls themselves Itchload is a complete deuschbag. O.K. Mr. expert on Frank Black. It's good to know you read all the books published about the ethics of hardcore punk rock, about empty idealism and all that bullshit that doesn't matter. You're not the guy who has enough brains to write the songs, you just pride yourself on trying to be an expert on the person that does. The truth is that you have no fucking clue. Why don't you go back to playing Dungeons and Dragons with all your little geek friends. Try and keep yourself out of matters involving beautiful things like music. |

Awesome. This is the finest overreaction I've seen in a while. Time to make the move to decaf! |

I wouldn't say that Dylan fell off the wagon after his first albums. Blonde on Blonde and Desire are probably the best two albums he recorded. I'd say he fell off the wagon right about when he discovered Christianity in a big way and started writing songs for Michael Bolton.
As for the Pixies, Frank's songs have changed, I don't think you could really expect them to get back together and be the same. But they still get together every once in a while for a wee jam so maybe if they still feel the magic something will come out of it...

I would say that Dylan never fell off the wagon. Maybe he fell off YOUR wagon, but not mine, or any other Dylanfreak. I won't begin to justify any of the more "recent" albums, just to say that the songs FB does are off those more "recent " ones (changing of the guard/ and all the white horses - which introduces the band as of late)
Pixies will reunite (not to sound expert or anything). But I think it will be more of a VelvetUnderground-type reunion. Go on tour, doing the old songs, and maybe produce a live version of the concert. |

Yeah Desire is amazing - I never liked it at first after getting into Blonde On Blonde - the songs seemed too maudlin - but now I like it so much I could BURST, just like explode everywhere, and my guts would form the words "LEO LIKES BOB DYLAN" on the wall.
As for Dylan never falling off the wagon - his Christian rock albums are bound to sucksucksuck, not that I've heard them. And his songs that he wrote for Michael Bolton might be alright but he wrote them for Michael Bolton, so they suck by association.

I disagree about Dylan. I love folk-Bob, country-Bob, Electric-Bob and even Christian-Bob. When Bob Dylan sang 'Saved' you believed it man. That dude was SAVED! I end up enjoying every Dylan CD I ever invested in.
His live shows can much more spotty depending on his ability to enunciate. I have been to shows that were just transcendant and others that just left you wondering what the hell he has left... |

eldorado got it right, I'm actually Legs McNeill, old school punk veteran who coined the term "punk" via my old magazine, but since I never recorded any music I'm always kind of bitter that no one finds me that cool nowadays, and I mostly get by by doing VH1 documentaries about the 70's New York punk movement. Sorry man, my old punk cred is all I have, can't you give a guy a break? |

Yeah his christian stuff might be alright, I haven't heard it, but it would be about the first instance of somebody religious making good music ("Wired for Sound" by Cliff Richard being a notable exception). Also I'm biased against it because I don't believe in god - in the unlikely event that god does exist, he's a bit of a c*nt (he could end world hunger, get me laid, drop a piano on Geri Hairywell), so I'm not going to get piles worshipping him in a cold church. Two words that strike fear into any sane person with ears - "Christian Rock".

leokearse - although for the most part I think there are few things as pathetic as Christian Rock, there are exceptions, like Larry Norman ("Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?" is just brilliant :-). Anyway, Dylan's religious stuff owes alot to the blues, gospel and country, so it's not so blatantly CMOR. |

in reality a pixies reunion sounds like fun and would be fun to go to.....but i would not want them to record a new album. that would be a disaster i imagine. i am only speculating though.... granted, i still love the music he writes (frank black) and that is why i am a member here at fb.net, i have rarely heard or seen a reunion that i liked especially when they record a new record. the police at the rock and roll hall of fame was fun to watch but it seems like as most bands get older they suddenly lose their edge and start doing big production crap when they bring out people like the girl from no doubt and the guy guy from aerosmith to sing with them. i did like brian wilson's re-creation of pet sounds though and that tour was great. i went to 3 of the shows. whatever....i don't know what any of this is supposed to mean or if i had a point. ryan |

actually it would be really funny to hear a slick, production heavy pixies album. no wait, we've already got bossanova... hur hur. anyways, is everyone just goin to argue about a possible/impossible reunion til we and/or the ex-pixies all die? p.s. sorry about calling them the ex-pixies, i'm sure that is quite upsetting.

I know I'm going to catch shit for saying this, but I don't care:
Jane's Addiction never was all that great of a band.
They had a couple of songs that were brilliant, but there's a lot of chaff, too. Perry Farrell has always been a pretentious rock-star type whose lyrics are often sophomoric, and Dave Navarro has always been a wanker. I liked them years ago, but their music did not age well.

Eh, it's all opinion, anyway.
I appreciate them for the way they remind me of a particular time in my life (when I loved them), but I wouldn't put Jane's in the same league of bands as the Pixies.
The Pixies made extraordinary music. Music that never ages, and always manages to surprise you with something you never noticed before, even after listening to it for years. I can listen to the same Pixies CD for months at a time without getting tired of it. The only other band I can say that about is the Beatles.

Seriously , Frank if you ever frequent these forums , how come the Pixies never came to Australia? It's not fair. We had an english guy back pack his way to our house in Brisbane who had seen the Pixies 4 times, and he wasn't even that crazy about Frank's shananagisms. The closest we got to the Pixies live, were his rub it in stories and any live cds we could muster.

Another Pixies fan from Brisbane, awesome.
Yeah, it sucks that they never came to Australia. Not that I would have been able to see them, as I didn't get into the band until year later...I had a dream once that The Pixies reformed specifically to tour Australia, because they had never gotten around to touring here when they were still together.
I think that this should happen. The Pixies reform and only play in Australia, then never play again. Yes, you Americans and Europeans can have a taste of what it's like to go without for a change. Muuuahahahahaha. MUUUAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAAAA.
Ahem. |
