Hello,
I'd really love to see Frank and the Catholics jam on stage. I love that they extend intros, outros and even the middles of some songs. I enjoy their live versions of Pixies songs more than the Pixies (from the bootlegs I've heard).
While I don't want every song to be a ten-minute jam session, I'd love it if they would open up on more of their songs and extend the music. They're all certainly good enough musicians! Take the ending of Robert Onion (right before the outro) where all the instruments are just chugging ahead, Frank's howling out "RAAAHBERT" the keys and the guitars are smashing those chords and---man, I'd love to have them extend that for a while, let Rich and Dave solo along.
Anyway, I hate when I go to see a band in concert and they play everything as it is on the cd. I love when bands just go off in concert and take risks with their music.
Fb & the C's are truly one of the worthwhile concert experiences, that they play without a setlist is great! That some songs are reworked in the live setting is fantastic; but I'd certainly love to see them push this aspect of themselves to new limits.
I'd rather have less songs in a setlist and more jamming than as many songs as possible that pretty much duplicate the cd's, except that they are faster.
c'est tout. |

you might find shows like that
fb seems to concentrate on linguistics, however a concise and eloquent lyricist he is, he has a limited budget of time to spit the mad lyrcis...
If you see Tool live it sounds like the cd w/o no dubs, you're right 'bout that, I like no set list spontineity sp also.
Whatever happned to :
Velvety Adventure and Resolution
I know what you are saying and I agree and feel the same way...
I guess it's an issue of managing time... and fb sure has a lot to say...
I think they like the tight sound and the shifts between songs...
like
you know when the song is over
oh well

Well, I guess it is a balancing act. Too much soloing is reallu dull. I think that on BLD/DW FB and the Cs has crossed the line a couple of times ('Heloise' is the prime suspect), but like they usually give a good mix. The extended intro to 'Gauge Away' is just perfect, and the Sonic Youthy 'Los Angeles' as well.
I would wish they'd rework the songs more. It would be nice to hear a Bluesy "Are You Headed My Way?' and hard rocking versions of some of the slower tunes ('bartolomeo' would make a wonderful Pixies like Punky when played twice as fast) |

Wow, I really love Heloise, I think it's perfect. I think the solos on the albums suit each song perfectly. Like I said before, I'd love it if the band would groove along while Rich or Dave (or hell, even Frank...!) jam out.
Songs I've heard that are extended live: Gouge Away,(this is a great moment, when Scott and Dave thunder out the rhythm while Rich joins in on the keys...I've heard the Pixies boot where they do this version but I prefer the Catholics, it's longer) I've Gotta Move, Bullet, 666, Hermpahroditos, Cactus, Nimrod's Son, Holiday Song, (sometimes the intro) So Bay, Dance the Manta Ray, I Switched You, Llano Del Rio...I can't recall any others right now.
I guess even if they just reverted back to playing all the songs exactly like the albums I'd still go see them; it's a testament to Frank's songwriting and their musicianship, but I'd be disappointed. I think I recall reading an interview where he's discussing Blast-Off and how Frank just wanted to jam. When I saw them in 98 it seemed like they pretty much played stuff standard off the albums, but in 01 they were extending the songs.
It seems like a natural progression for musicians, after honing a song as a band to just let it mutate in concert. One of my favorite moments from seeing them live was during the encore, when they were playing (I think) New House of the Pope and Rich pointed to Jack Kidney, for him to take a solo. Sheeyit. I'm lucky to have been at a show with harmonica and later, (during the Snake) sax! From the Snake with Jack wailing away right into Cactus to end the show. I'm shaking my head just thinking about it.
Anyway---I hope Europe gets a great tour; with even more variation among the setlists and with more live expermintation.
Viva FB et les Catholics!

I really like the jam on the studio version of Blast Off, something I'd like to see more frequently in studio as well as live.
But yeah, the uniqueness of the live experience with jams and overall subtle dynamics to the music make FB&theC's live shows impressive...I've only been to one of his shows and next time I'll know what to expect and enjoy it even more.

i haven't seen Frank Black for many years now - but generally - jamming sucks. The interview-clip with Joey Santiago at BBC, where he claims that he and Black after carefull research found out the ideal length of a show - and that soloes were a waste of time - is full of wisdom. |
