I have a couple friends that are interested in CD Baby as a way of distributing their band's music and they asked me what I thought. Initially it looks good, though I may be missing something. So, I thought I would ask people here, given the number of musicians on board. Has anyone heard of CD Baby? Anyone tried it?

| I haven't tried it, but I researched it a bit, and I think Amazon sounds like a better deal. As I recall, CDBaby keeps $4 from each CD sold. I forget how much Amazon keeps, but I think it's less than $4. I haven't looked into their digital distribution deal at all. Is it a new service? I don't recall seeing it there before. |

I haven't used it myself, but I've heard nothing but good about CD Baby. $4 an album really isn't that bad...if you sell your album for $10, you get a $6 profit. You could always just sell your album yourself through your own website, but then you'd have to handle all the shipping, etc. With CD Baby, you just send them as many CDs as you want and they sell them there. You'd still have to promote it yourself. This new digital distribution stuff just came up recently (within the past few days, actually), so who knows how well it'll work, but it sounds like a good idea. It's not some sort of magical cure-all that all of the sudden you'll be selling thousands of dollars of music each month...you still have to do all the promotion.
