This has been itching at me for a while. In the liner notes of Black Letter Days, it has Rich Gilbert as playing saxophone. Am I trifle deaf in one ear? What song(s) is there a sax on?
I'm confused as to why I haven't ever noticed a saxophone track on BLD, if there is one.

That's what I'm thinking--at the end of Jane. Derek, close your ears, cause I'm gonna talk about SMYT. Does anyone know if that's Rich who does the freakout sax solo on The Snake? I love it--it's hilarious. It sounds so much like what Rich does on the guitar that I simply assume it's him. Anybody? |

no isn't that that other guy who jammed with FB and the C's one night in LA on the Snake and after that on John The Revelator. People on the forum must have seen this concert. I read the information above on this site. Maybe echo park? he's an insider anyways

echo park had something to do with the SMYT recordings, and I think it was vocals. I don't think he was the guy who played harmonica that night, tho.

Ah, I just listened to the end of Jane. That's crazy I never noticed that. But I think cuz it hardly sounds like a saxophone (or how you usually hear one on jazz albums). It sounds more like a bizarre stringed instrument. I never got my sax in elementary school band to sound like that.

Yeah man, I had no clue that was a sax. I had no idea what it was, really...it sounds so odd you don't really think of it, you know? I thought it was a weird ass organ.

I used to play sax for a few years (I still remember how, I just really have no desire to play it - more into the guitar and mando these days), so maybe I'm a little used to the sound - but that is totally a sax at the end of Jane, people. Now, what kind - I'm not sure. Probably a tenor.

That bitchen sax solo on the SMYT track is one of the Kidney Brothers, I forget each of their first names right now, from Ohio, I think or somewhere near Pere Ubu land. Yes, the brothers were a part of that whole David Thomas Disastodrome show here in L.A. back in February. Great fun. |

Jack Kidney play Sax on "The Snake" off of SMYT. It isn't Rich. It is a pretty cool solo. That song has grown on me a lot. Didn't like it all that much at first. What a shock for a Frank song. :)
I got me so down I got me a headache. |
