Hey yo, I think the D7 chord that follows Am is played as follows:

e-0-
b-1-
g-2-
d-0-
a-x-
e-2-

and perhaps would be named something like D9/F#.

Sorry, once you get into the 9s and #s you start to leave my realm of expertise.

But did you try the chord within the framework of the song? Doesn't it sound better?

That D7 never did sound right to me. But I don't think your chord sounds right, either. I'm probably wrong, but I like a Dsus2 (xx0230). It's tough to hear on the CD because that note is mostly bass and piano.

Vegan nailed it. Last night I saw Frank play V&G at McCabes. Here is the chord he plays after the Am: 2x0210 (like vegan said). In other words he has his hand in the Am position and lifts his finger off the D string and puts it on the E string (2nd fret). Also, I believe the chord before G# is D major (xx0232). So it would go like this:

Am D9/F# G Bm F Am D G# G

I agree with BLT's correction. I figured out Karma Police by Radiohead and they use that same transition from Am to D9/F# by moving one finger. It's probably quite common.
