sort of related to the "sad" song thread..
isn't it odd that Frank has written QUITE a few break up songs yet, as far as i know, has been with the same woman throughout most (if not all) of his career?
either way, if you're going through a break up, Frank has definitely got a few numbers for the occasion.

Indeed true. I learned that the hard way a few months ago. |

Is there an issue here of whether the songs are 'genuine' enough? |

i don't think genuineness is an issue.. as a songwriter you have free reign to write whatever you want.. and even if Frank has been with the same person, that doesn't mean he doesn't know what it's like to go through a break up, or even that he hasn't gone through a break up with this person (and gotten back together)...
i think everyone knows what it's like and can relate to it, even if they're not going through it at that specific moment. the only important thing to me is whether the song is good or not, which in Frank's case, they almost always are..
i just think it's interesting that the recent albums seem to have so many.. |

I agree for the most part. I wish I could remember how to find the article/interview in which Frank talked about his attitude toward writing "personal" songs. Anyway, you're right, you gotta wonder what the point of these songs is at this particular time. |

Maybe these songs have deeper meanings. I don't know what the Hell it would be but maybe they don't have anything to do with break-ups at all. I mean, Frank's a genius, you never know what he's thinking |

holy shit.....i was gonna start the same thread based on the same question! i do wonder about it....especially since some of those break-up songs take up a strong resonance after an actual break-up....but then again, these 'break-up'/ heartache songs are the roots of rock music....i mean, i'm pretty sure frank didnt feel it necessary to pretend he was a flood to write a song from the point of view taken in St-Francis Dam Disaster....

Yeah, all those break up songs sounded so emotional and convincing I thought he actually broke up with his girl. What a fine master of deception! |
