I forgot about I Don't Wanna Hurt You. That song is semi-sad, but very beautiful as well.

I'll add St. Francis Dam Disaster. An excellent song about a truly sad event. |

I really can't speak for myself - this changes all the time. The only one that ALWAYS seems to get me is Man of Steel. But I can tell you my mom finds The Farewell Bend, Cold Heart of Stone, and The Swimmer to be real tearjerkers. |

Dog in the Sand is hauntingly sad to me.
Perhaps Perhaps might not be far off in the reversal of Frank's 'sad song/good spirits' statement with the Jumping Beans example. Though it's a fun-sounding song, those beans turn out to be a metaphor for the singer. "I'd even take them in a rocket-- but I can't go nowhere though I'm jumping, no I can't go nowhere though I'm jumping". Burning to go but as stuck as a larva in a shell. Frustrating torment. Sad.

Hey in his pixies days always struck me a sad.
Black Letter days always makes me feel a little lower.
I will run makes me get a lump in my throat.
And of course; shazdeb...
There is always I'll be blue...a clear forerunner on this one!

I'll Be Blue might be one of his saddest songs all around for me. A few of his songs are sad, but there is usually something keeping the song from being completely sad. Whether it's the music (chord progession, melody) or something in the lyrics.
Frank does tend to end a ton of songs on minor chords, but that doesn't necessarily make the song sad. Cuz alot of his "happier," upbeat songs (Llano, Bartholomew, etc.) end on minors, and then a semi-sad song like Dog Gone ends on D major.

I think that the story behind "I Gotta Move" is a sad one, but the awesome tone of the music and the way he sings kind of eliminates my point. Dog in the Sand is definately a pretty sad sounding song to me, as are Motorway to Rosswell and Southbound Bevy. Can't really think of anymore that haven't been said yet.

the last stand of shazeb andleeb IS NOT SAD
"He ascended into light..."
That is about as good as it gets, in my book.

In terms of the words, these are my 3 saddest:
1. six sixty-six 2. Back to Rome 3. Old Black Dawning
(I know F. black did not write lyrics to 666, but he chose to use them on one of his albums) |

Dear God, I had no idea that you people were huddled in here discussing A Confederacy of Dunces! That's my favorite novel of all time. Poor crazy old Ignatius J and his botched Crusade for Moorish Dignity. I re-read it every few years and it gets less funny and more sad every time.
Back to FB, I think that Southbound Bevy is a mighty sad song. Not a big, overwhelming sorrow, just that quiet little resignation & longing. It's a beautiful embodiment of that small, everyday sort of "I could have been somebody" kind of sadness. |

Yes mere, there is intelligent life outside the pictionary/henhouse. You've got a little Ignatius in you, don't you. I'm not finished reading it yet, but I agree, it is sad. It makes it hard for me to read. |

for me it's just the combination of the the way he sings it (especially the, "hoooohh, and i could not belive my heart could feel so heavy" part) and the way the guitars and piano sound.. and the whole feel of the song is just, i can't explain it.. i think it's an all-purpose sadness song.. for whatever sad thing you might be thinking about (with a little loneliness sprinkled in).. |

I have a boot of the Little Rock show where I first heard Southbound Bevy and the noise of bottles clinking and people laughing during it makes it sound even lonelier.
Well speedy, I had little choice--there sure isn't any intelligent life inside the pictionary thread today. ;-P |

mere, I am truly shocked an appalled at your accurate comments related to the intelligence of the pictionary participants. I may never speak to you again (outside that thread). No offense to anyone name mere. I hate mere.
(The above is a reference to your brilliant "no offense to anyone from Kansas. I hate Kansas. That had me laughing my arse clean off.) |
