come to think of it, this post probably belongs in the Here Comes Your Man section...
though it's impossible to prove, you won't believe it and i'm blowing away any chance at being cool: i am the biggest pixies fan ever.
written by Black Francis in high school:
THE TURNING
The passing of the harvest reap, When tiller's fields fall fast asleep, Is due the coming of the rime. The whistler in the barren wood, The somber flute, it only could Be Boreas making winter chime. And then....December snowslip, soft and deep.
Paints the land a milky sea And fills the irksome tracks of we Who dare molest the perfect face of white. The loch becomes an icy floor, A lucid stone from shore to shore. And Boreas blows with all his might. And then...vernal equinox it soon will be.
When the black crow will decide on Which new branch it will reside on And claim it with a rude repeating scream, When the forest weaves a coat of jade, And snowslip turns a withered shade Of pale and melts to droplets in the stream, And stream runs down the mountain to Poseidon.
-Charles Thompson
THESE LAME EYES
Though these orbs are dark And merely fill the hollows in my head, These lame eyes, Did you think I would not know It's arrival? I knew it by the incalescance That grows up from the place they Call the East, The phlogiston that melts my tracks, carved In snow, the warmth that renders soft The frozen sod. And the fowl told me, too, Screaming the onset at my window and Pronouncing Lydian airs from the boughs in honor Of its commencement. And from the boughs, silent for so long, Came, also, a rustling, A gentle applause praising in a Withering northern wind. There was, too, the lancing Of my very breaths with perfumes From the budding weald, Aromas, which bursting in my breast drifted Through my bone and blood and mind And remained within me. Its arrival was ushered in By the hands of an unseen clock, And through these lame eyes, Could I hide from Their touch?

I won't deny your affirmation. I don't care if I'm not the biggest Pixies fan ever, as I personnaly am the most hugest Frank Black fan ever.

hmmmm, I can only read these poems with doubt. Comparing the with any of Frank's lyrics they are dissimilar in rhythm, style, choice of language. They sound more like Virgil (or maybe some Greek poet).
Maybe you would like to offer an explanation of how you have come into their possession.
Or maybe FrankusBlackus could eliminate the confusion :)
they speak vaudevillian... |

Yeah, obviously it's impossible to look at it without skepticism. Unfortunately, I doubt we'll be hearing anything from Mr. Black while he is in the Republic of Saskatoon (AKA Europe & Australia). It doesn't really sound like him, granted, but then people change over time, so I wouldn't entirely discredit it either. Some source info would be nice, though almost certainly could no more convince me than the poems themselves. |

I believe I'm the biggest FB fan. I used to be in The Bennies (before they toured with FB), I used to run their website, I am the owner of the AbstractPlain, and co-'owner' of frankblack.net. Booyah. |

a guy who used to run 'the Pixies Vault' i believe it was called and i corresponded. he had some high school pictures (from a yearbook) of Charles and he sent me these poems from the yearbook (used to be at http://beaker.nmsu.edu/spaceman/fb/fbhighschool.html, it was Charles for sure). Pixies Vault became the Black Vault(at http://www.levitated.net/fb/) which used to be about the man, but recently has become some sort of experimental/showcase thing.
i memorized how to play every guitar part on lead and rhythm and sing every song the pixies ever wrote (except Silver). the quality of my guitar work is the thing though, it sounds just like them (easy to say, hard to prove i know). I suppose how you define a fan varies from one person to person, but by my own standards i suppose, i've never come across a bigger one. 'cause in my opinion, you could've seen every FB/Pixies show they performed, but you haven't had to get inside the mental headspace required to produce those psychotic/blissful sounds and noises with those unnerving time signatures.
kind of was disappointed that the tribute album was closed by the time i read about it, having memorized the first solo album and most of Teenager of the Year. we're all here just to have fun and appreciate FB, just thought i'd leave a footnote about those years of obsession and it's nice to meet you all.
cheers. |

Neo, if you'd like to do a cover and upload it to the ftp, I'm sure that's fine, it just won't be considered for inclusion in the final track list. However, I'm sure it could be made available for download by everyone on the forum. |

Yeah, I love hearing people, just fans, cover FB's music. It's more imortant to me than hearing, say, Weezer or somebody cover one.
Although I'd like to hear Weezer cover one anyway. |

Indeed, I'd be more than happy to have a cover on the FTP site, Neo. Send me an email when you're done, though, like Speedy said, it won't be on the official tribute CD. If that's not good enough, we should have a Pixies disc starting up in August. |

i haven't seen the poems, but i have seen some CKT3 yearbook pics. He wrote some religious stuff (like, "goal: follow Jesus" or something), which I thought was odd since he's said in interviews that he was never very religious. Perhaps he wrote that stuff just to please his folks or something. |

I suspect it was probably more of him making a joke of it, but what do I know? |

I think the second one sounds pretty Frank-y. Lot's of references to stuff, unusual words and such. These Lame Eyes is kind of a "lame" title though, but perhaps like Show Me Your Tears, it would grow on me. |

Sorry, I can't answer that one. It was probably somewhere in his hometown, but when I read those poems they looked a lot like someone writing something for school. Obviously that's what they were for. I never really had to do that at school, but these works definitely emit that vibe for me. To me, these can't even be compared to the words he sets to music. I know some songwriters might try to sound like scholars, but they're definitely exceptional cases in rock music. Also, I could be wrong about this, but didn't the Pixies form right after he quit school or something? I know when I quit university the only thing I wanted to do with my writing was keep it far from academic. Maybe he was looking for a less restrictive medium in which to write. Maybe I'm just clueless.
Nothing is ever something. |

I was the guy who originally posted the poems on the Subacultcha mailing list I also scanned the year book pictures sent them to the Black Vault. Frank's senior year book is my guitarist soph. He let me borough it a while ago but I still got that fugger. The poems are legit.

Hey there obmeZ, how about posting the year book pics or sending them to Dave (Noisy, our exalted webmaster and evil warlord)? The Black Vault may be dead, but fb.net is alive and well and kicking ass! Also... "Frank's senior year book is my guitarist soph"? I'm not following, cheif. Cheers! |

He was asked to write something to fill a couple of pages and this is what he turned in to the yearbook staff of which i was on. He moved to Westport,Ma. at the beginning of his senior year and graduated from Westport high in 1983. i would love to upload these poems and picture from the yearbook if i only had ascanner, sorry, maybe in the future.
