O.K. I'm at work and trying to burn an hour and a half before my next English lesson. So I have set myself the challenge of ranking the Frank Black albums from what I think is best to worst (in my opinion)... 1 = Best ...... 9 = Not so best. Here we go.

1 = Frank Black
2 = Teenager of the Year
3 = Dog In The Sand
4 = Devils Workshop
5 = Frank Black & The Catholics
6 = Pistolero
7 = Black Letter Days
8 = Cult of Ray
9 = Kitchen Tapes

Mmmmm, I think thats it.... that was pretty difficult.... and to some extent I'm not too happy with it.

Anyway, I'm interested in what you guys see as the best, and not so best....

Cheers

Stu

Wow, how the hell did I miss out Oddballs. So, my revised ranking would be:

1 = Frank Black
2 = Teenager of the Year
3 = Dog In The Sand
4 = Devils Workshop
5 = Frank Black & The Catholics
6 = Pistolero
7 = Black Letter Days
8 = Cult of Ray
9 = Oddballs
10 = Kitchen Tapes

The Black Sessions / Kitchen Tapes was a french radio broadcast around the time of FB and TOTY (I think 1994). Is it an official release, or is it a bootleg? You never seem to find it in many places and I would guess that most people haven't got it. I would really like to get my hands on ssmvgd though, can anyone be so kind as to get it copied to cd and then mail it to me when I am back in England? I would be forever in debt to you if you could.

Moving on... Pixies rankings:

1 = Surfer Rosa + Come on Pilgrim
2 = Bossanova
3 = Doolittle
4 = Trompe Le Monde
5 = B Sides
6 = Death To Pixies (live cd)
7 = BBC Sessions
8 = Purple Tapes ???? Not too sure about this one as I'll buy this one when I am back in England

This is definitely subject to change, especially the positions of the two new albums.

1. Teenager of the Year
2. Dog in the Sand
3. Frank Black
4. Devil's Workshop
5. The Cult of Ray
6. Pistolero
7. Black Letter Days
8. Frank Black and the Catholics
9. Oddballs

As for the Pixies, I'd go with:

1. Bossanova
2. Trompe Le Monde
3. Doolittle
4. Come On Pilgrim
5. Surfer Rosa

Come On Pilgrim is kind of hard to place, since I don't think there are any really weak songs on it, but it's really short.

Anyway, that's what I say now, but it could easily change upon next listen to any one of them.

1-Dog in the MFin Sand
2-Dog in the MFin Sand
3-Dog in the MFin Sand
4-Teenager of the MFin Year
5-Pistol MFin ero
6-Black Letter Days
7-FBatMFC Eponymous
8-Devil's MFin Workshop
9-FB Epon (could be higher up but I hate the production)
10-Cult of MFin Ray
11-SSMVMFGD
I don't think of Oddballs as a real album based on my belief that it's a compendium of oddities. Is that right, or no? If so, I justify leaving it out because it's so much different from having specific sessions for a specific record. Like even with the rehashings of some of the SSMVGD songs on the new records, they re-recorded them. And I most certainly don't consider a pair of basement tapes and an hour from a French live show as a "real" album.

Pixies (Frank's earlier band)
1-Surfer MFin Rosa
2-Doolittle
3-Bossa MFin Nova
4-The Whole Purple Tape (Come On Pilgrim inclusive, right?)
5-Trompe le Mondale

Incidentally, Frank is soooooooooooooooooooo damned prolific. Think about it. The Pixies died ten years ago (it seems way longer, to me anyway). Frank has released eight full-length real live albums since that time, not including SSMVGD. Plus there's a good 50-60 or many many more I suppose B-side and rarity type tracks that came out on Oddballs or otherwise (like Mother Popcorn or Pray for the Girls). Plus I have heard those whisperings of ANOTHER record being made or almost ready or whatever. Wow.

I think this is part of the problem for critics. The lack of red tape for Frank has meant breaking the mold that critics are used to, of some big, fat, shiny star like U2 taking 4 years to come up with 12 songs, 7 of which are nothing more than highly polished petrified horseshit. So instead of lauding him and his atypical profuse flow of robust sound, their heads start spinning and they basically bleat out "THAT DOES NOT COM-PUTE COM-PUTE NOT COMPUTE DANGER WILL ROBINSON BEEEEEEP TILT TILT TILT . . ."

"Plain n' simp--the system's a pimp, but I refuse to be a ho."

2-8 are bound to switch around

1. the teenager of the year
2. the frank black and the catholics
3. the frank black
4. the devil's workshop
5. the pistolero
6. the black letter days
7. the the cult of ray
8. the dog in the sand

It's a tie between 7 and 8. I don't like putting any frank albums last on a list cause honestly i like them all. It's too hard ordering them. Except teenager of the year is my favorite frank blackie album

My list would be:
1. Teenager Of The Year
2. Dog In The Sand
3. Frank Black
4. Black Letter Days
5. Pistolero
6. Devil's Workshop
7. Frank Black & The Catholics
8. Oddballs
9. Cult Of Ray

I unfortunately don't have a copy of SSMVGD so I can't rank it. All of his work is so damn impressive it is so hard to rank them. Definitely Teenager and Dog are his two most impressive albums to date.

1. Teenager
--no doubt about it--
2. Devil's Workshop
--maybe #2 cuz it has a "Teenager" spirit to it--
3. Frank Black
--the old standard--
4. Black Letter Days
--some of Frank's most innovative songs since TOTY--
5. Dog
--very good but over-rated--
6. FB & C's
--MUST be played loud to be fully appreciated--
7. Pistolero
--nothing wrong, just not as strong as others--
8. Cult of Ray
--hey, nobody's perfect--

Pixies
1. Surfer Rosa
--the easy pick--
2. Doolittle
3. Bossanova
4. Trompe Le Monde
5. Come on Pilgrim
--too short--

I don' care to do a whole list, but I have to agree with any and all sentiments that "Dog in the Sand" is the undisputed heavyweight champ of the world.

I'm really coming around to "Devil's Workshop" high on the list, too. "Out of State" I think has to be one of Frank's most intense tunes ever. Hell, the first five tracks, up through "Bartholomew" is like a cannon salvo of really really great song after another.

it's a fantastic record but I haven't listened to it in a few weeks. i more put it near the bottom because of that reason, since i hadn't listened to it in some time. I'm more into Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop right now. Well obviously since they just came out.

And, yeah, Trompe Le Monde is my favorite Pixies album! Maybe a tie with Doolittle.

My choices are pretty obvious and the only reason why some of those are loved more than others is to do with their timing in relation to my own evolutionary processes. Also, the formats I own them on dictates how often they get played - I own 4 types of personal noisemaker and it depends what kind of day I'm in...

8.Oddballs

Very tough one - like asking what was your favorite steak dinner!

At the moment - it has to be Devils Workshop, closely followed by Pistolero, (which never seems to go far away). All the rest jostle for 1st and 2nd at various other times.

Pixies was Trompe le Monde, followed by all the rest in 2nd.

Changes all the time though - such a huge and diverse body of work!
