I e-mailed spinArt records last month and asked them why Frank Black has never done Austin City Limits. They [meaning Brendan Gilmartin - Brendan@spinartrecords.com] replied with quote: "I'm not sure ACL would book a band like Frank Black would they? On top of that it's hard to schedule around his tour schedule and their taping schedule."
My view on this is that he [Charles Thompson IV (also known as Black Francis and Frank Black)] mentions individuals whom have preformed on ACL and I feel that he is of most high caliber. In addition, I believe in supply and demand - meaning if we [FB fans] get our word out to him and/or the record co then they will supply. So, please let me know what you think and maybe 23 Oct 2002 I can some how pass it on to FB at one of his shows.

There are over 200 members and I have only recieved two replies (the other under 'Tour question for Frank'). I would really love to see how many of you see my view.

i'm sure everyone would be happy if Frank played there (even though there are probably a small percentage of people here from Texas [or any one given city]).. what else is there really to say on the subject?
i encourage you to encourage Frank and his record company.. (since i'm guessing you live near there).. but i don't think it's up to decide what Frank "should" do..
but give me a petition and i'll sign it.. |

I'd love to see him on ACL. Great idea. You'd get to see him do a few tunes, not just one like on the Kilborn show. I'll sign that petition, too. |

Sounds very cool but I doubt they would let him play. I mean he'd probably have to stick to very country based songs, no? I'd sign a petition though. |

ACL is not strictly country music. David Byrne was on recently and there is often blues. |

He could play anything off of Dog In The Sand...especially Bullet which always seemed a Johnny Cash song to me. The twangy guitar, etc. |

I say it would be very cool...cept I'm afraid Frank's version of country would blow most involved with Austin City Limits minds...it's way too hip...though Jet Black River might work--man I love that song... |

I think you Austin people are lucky since Bill Hicks put you guys on the global map, and surely he played there at some point too. so yeah, I'm with you on this!

I taught that I would replay this topic because I am way too lame and simple minded to think of anything new and/or original to post. Also, I want to give the 200+ new members (since I originally posted) a chance to voice their opinions.

I still think it's a great idea. ACL and FB seem like a cool match to me, kind of like Frank Black Unplugged or something? |

No never!!! That would only benefit Texans. Don't you think that's a bit racialist?
Kidding... sure why not? How would I know?

I wondered what that was all about... saw it earlier in my FB.net career. We just got TV up here so I don't know all the lingo yet, but, thanks to people like you I am learning!

I sent an email about a month ago and the response that I got was....to the effect of: Frank Black, hmmmm we don't think he would be a proper fit for the show.

We already had a thread like this and Frank himself replied and said he'd love to play ACL.

Frank Black absolutely must play at Austin City Limits. Unquestionably, ACL would be honored to have him play. I live in Austin. I was also the one who developed the Black Vault, a site dedicated to the man and his band in the late 90's. Not that this gives me any special power of authority, but I am confident that a city like Austin would absolutely go nuts over a guy like Frank Black.
The ACL does not require country music, although even if it did, I think the most recent FB&C tunes would definitely qualify as outstanding!

R.I.P., venerable Black Vault! That was an amazing site, Jared. I was truly distressed when it went away. |

Frank would be a good fit on ACL, despite what the powers that be may deem worthy. I've seen plenty of diversity on the show. If it happens, there may be some hope for the human race after all...lol Also, welcome aboard Jared! We all miss the Vault.... |

I'm really unfamiliar with the show, I've only seen a few snippets (a few weeks ago I caught the end of Robert Plant's set) but still, it'd be great to see FB & les C's on there.
I hope they would at least get an hour to play and just blow the audience away.
cheers |
