pioneer,
surely you're not that close-minded that you equate coffee-loving with gayness.. "my gay friend is into flavored coffee".. where do you live, Kentucky?
either way, true coffee freaks don't drink flavored coffee. it completely undermines the flavor of the beans..
i'm sincerely doubting your supertaster status here. i think even a so-called supertaster should know what a good cup of coffee tastes like ..

sorry, i misunderstood you there poineer..
hazelnut is ok.. if someone offers me a flavored coffee i'm not going to turn it down.. i just generally find that the flavored stuff is usually less fresh and less strong.
i need a serious cup of coffee in the morning or i become violently angry within minutes.
speaking of morning though, it's past my bedtime..
night all... |

I never specified which of us is anti-matter. Just that we're opposites.
I'd rather have tea than flavored coffee and the Red Sox are my team. (Go Pedro!) |

heart palpitations are half the fun.
as for brewers, i think they're pretty much all the same, though there are some ridiculously expensive ones. i am a believer in the cone-shaped filter though (no. 4).. don't get one of those flat bottomed Mr. Coffee brewers. fuck those. Kruups. that's a brand you can depend on.
french presses are overrated.
the secret to good coffee is freshness (and quality).. ideally coffee should be made one cup at a time (with a "Mulita") and should be drank right away.. if it's been sitting on the pot, it loses its taste within 20 minutes..
also, choose the right beans. pick a bean that is nice and oiley on the outside.. that's always a good sign. never buy a "blend".. that's the left-over, less-fresh beans from all the other kinds.
follow these rules and you'll be on your way joy-filled heart palpitating.

And, despite the advertising Columbian beans are not very good beans. Also, you want Arabica beans (which is most of them) not the other type (name of which is slipping my mind and making the advice worthless) that is being grown in huge quantities particularly in Vietnam. Peet's dark roasts (Italian roast) are my favorite and like floop said they are nice and oily. I'm too lazy to make one cup at a time and like french presses for an occasional change of pace. I typically just grind beans and pour hot water through a #4 filter.
I know nothing about, except that green tea might help reduce cancer and herbal teas are girly (kidding). |

Thanks and thanks. Now all my problems are solved. Greasy, non-blend Arabica beans & #4 filters. You guys may be out to lunch regarding Mexican food, but you're most persuasive regarding coffee. |

darwin, you're a man after my own heart. Peet's is pretty much my first choice, and i usually get the Italian roast too. how about that?
i don't like going out of my way to support chains or anything, but Peet's is definitely upper-eschalon. too bad there aren't any on the East Coast.
the best coffee shop in the world (that i know of at least) is Royal Coffee, in Berkeley, CA. if you're ever up there, definitely go and buy some beans too..

Floop, thanks for the Royal tip. I'm moving back to CA in August (to Davis) so I may get to Berkeley and Royal Coffee (I don't think I've been there). I have been to some snotty Berkeley cafe where I was informed in a dismissive manner that they don't sell coffee (just mochas and such). Damn posers.
You can order Peet's through the mail, but with shipping it's becoming an expensive habit for my budget. |
