Wow! What a list. I feel like I’m out of my league here with so many obvious hardcore film fanatics. Still, for what it’s worth here are a few of my favorites. Note: These qualify as being underrated only by the lack of interest by the general public. Most of the critics love these movies.
1. You Can Count On Me Small in scope, profound in effect. If you're human it will move you.
2. The Straight Story (sure Blue Velvet’s good as are all of David Lynch’s movies, but The Straight Story is in a league of its own. Hard to believe this sweet movie was made by the same man who disturbed us so with Eraserhead.
3. Spirited Away Best Miyazaki movie I’ve seen (though I have a few left). And if you’ve never had the pleasure of viewing one...forget all the stereotypes you know of anime, forget all the schlock you’ve had thrown at you from Disney and enjoy. A deep movie filled with metaphor. Truly a masterpiece.
4. Nobody’s Fool (not as good as the book, but when are they ever) Great Paul Newman performance. Greater writing.
See a pattern here. As the Sparklehorse song says, "It's a sad and beautiful world." All of these films exemplify that. |

What about True Romance? Tarantino wrote it, I think, and it's a really violent love-story type of movie.
I haven't seen Naked Lunch, but I've read the book a couple of times. I should rent the movie sometime though, just to see what it's all about.
You know who amazes me? The movie geek from 'Beat the Geeks'. He knows way too damn much about movies. |

Hey Bartolomew!! I loved Nobodys Fool, that was a great film that I bet almost no one has seen. It has it all: snowblowers and Melanie Griffiths woohoos!! |

Bartholomew...I think it might have been Jim Jarmusch to first say "it's a sad and beautiful world" in the movie Mystery Train. There's another great movie to check out, not necessarily underrated though, or even that obscure..but solid nonetheless.

Every time my mind conjures up the names of one or two solid, relatively unknown films while I'm perusing this forum, I'm a gonna resurrect this thread!
House of Yes, with Parker Posey. Daytrippers, with Parkey Posey. Scream 3, with... just kidding! (That would go in the horror thread, anyway, wouldn't it?) Jerome. Sorry, no Parker Posey. |

Parker Posey was in 'Basquiat'
Solid movie, IMO.

Some guy actually just rode across America on a lawnmower. Very beautiful film, one of Lynch's best.

Yep, Basquiat was good. Bowie as Warhol, can't beat that.
Speaking of Warhol, Lili Taylor was excellent in "I Shot Andy Warhol". |

I believe it was Down By Law. The song and another song on the album "heart of darkness" were about/inspired by the movie...
I can't implore you enough...check Sparklehorse out |

I didn't read through all of the posts so I don't know if it was mentioned or not but: Breakfast with Blassey was an awesome movie. It was Andy Kauffman's last film. Easily the funniest movie I have ever seen, funnier then Spinal Tap even.
How about some Ether? |

True Romance was awesome. Patricia Arquette is one tough chickateetah, she got her ass kicked but holy shit did she put up a fight! |
