Peer to peer is a great method to share stuff the problem is(legality apart)what client to choose.Since kazaa won the trial it got a lot of pubblicity and these guys feel authorised to include spyware or adware in their program,an attitude that is the exact opposite of peer2peer mentality that is to share not to make money out of it...Personally i tried all p2p programs i could find and this is what i think: Kazaa:cool grafics but hidden ads i-Mesh : the same,i unistalled it and still got weather forecasts and casino banners until i installed ad-aware audiognome : not much stuff e-donkey :few users which brings us to the point of this thread:winmx poor grafics but completely ad-free,lots of users(as i write this there are 102.316 users online)and some interesting tools: 1)mxmonitor:automatically starts the download of people who start your download. 2)leechhammer:kicks out of your cue people who share nothing 3)napmx:updates in real time the on line servers(more than 150) Plus you can manually regulate bandwidth, your cue,add or remove servers and most important allows multi source download feature that permits a higher download speed. If you really want to share try it even if it's a bit difficult to use for beginners, when you get used to it you will forget all the others. www.winmx.com
P.S: I will sell my soul to satan for this Pixies show:

Some good points... I like KazaaLite. Add free and tons of connections. If it starts to fail, I'll try winmx. |

True, for music is better 'cause it has the dl folder option. Not that good for films or videos though cause you can dl from one user at a time and with slow connections you never get to finish...

yes, that's true- maybe direct connect would be better for people with faster connections. I don't do p2p that much, but I'm going to check out winmx later on your advice :-) |

and before anyone starts to question ethics, I only download MP3s of songs which aren't commercialy available, and also to hear new music- if I like something enough I'll buy the CD because MP3s don't sound that good... Oh, and south park episodes :-) |

What are newsgroups, Dave? I've heard them mentioned in the past, but no-ones ever explained just what they are to the dunce that I am. |

but Dave, about newsgroups - i pay for access (10$ a month - good speed 1.5gb dl-limit pr. day). Is there any way to get access for free, or does one always pay? |

Newsgroups is a system stemming from the old FidoNet backbone..basically it's a 'message board', that gets mirrored to different servers.
It is entirely made up of text messages. (Tho some of those messages are binary, and can be compiled into a file, lo and behold!)
It's not that easy to use tho, you need a program to download the messages and complile them, you need a good and reliable server, you have to make sure you're getting all the 'parts' and you need to know software like RAR and PAR. And you're at the mercy of what the good folks are posting...luckily there's often good stuff.
As for free services, check with your ISP. Shaw actually has *really* good reception, tho the retention is quite sad. I check several groups daily, and let 'er download over night. (I've got an episode of Stargate SG1 to entertain me tonite..wee!)
ivandivel - can you pull like 45gigs a month?? I use EasyNews as a backup, and it's $10 for 6gigs...but i could do it all in one day. It's got a *great* web interface too. I use it for fills mainly. (Split the account with a friend, sweet deal for that insurance..)
If you can deal with the above, it's an awesome system, and probably will never get shut down. (Hey, it's only messages!) |

The thing I don't like about newsgroups is that it's so hit or miss. Of course, there's always good stuff on there, and the speeds are great, but it lacks the "content on demand" that P2P offers (funny, my friends were talking about how TV fucking needs "content on demand" and that's why P2P is so great, if you can find what you were looking for). I've converted a few souls over to the wonder of newsgroups though, and it is definitely great if you're not really looking for one specific thing (you might come across an album that you'd thought of getting at some point, etc.). It KILLER for porn, though.

In theory - 45 gb pr month - I use My-Binaries. However, the speed slows down after 700-800mb, i think it is because they use 4 different servers - and they serve different groups - and the dl limit is spread across these - if that made any sense.
Another advantage, with the ranch (bubba zennetti) gone, newsgroups seem to be the only reliable source for audiowarez - and sample cds. |

Oh yes, it is king for music production-related stuff..
The main thing i download is TV shows.. It really *is* TV on demand in this case. And no commercials either. Downloaded a 130meg copy of this weeks 'Dead Zone'. Pretty handy. (The show is pretty dumb now tho..) |

Yeah, it is good for TV shows, but it's not *completely* on-demand...it's only "on-demand if what you demand has been shown on TV recently" ;) For everything else, it's P2P. So yeah, it's good for stuff that's been released recently because it'll most definitely be there.
