Hey, does anyone here know where I can get a complete discography of SST releases? That about covers it.

I dunno if you've already looked at this site, but it's as complete as you probably can get. They let alot of their stuff go OOP. (ex. Angst)

Yeah, I've already checked out SST's website; thanks for the info. The only stuff that's still in print are (most) of the popular SST stuff - Husker Du, Black Flag, Minutemen (Double Nickels = probably the best album released on the label), Dinosaur Jr., etc. And for good reason too, as that's probably the best SST stuff. But there were a lot of other SST bands that weren't really as popular as the aforementioned bands but still fantastic in their own right. Saccharine Trust , DC3 (anyone ever heard these guys? Fronted by Dez Cadena, former Black Flag vocalist - a friend has one of their releases and it absolutley rocks; they're mentioned in the "Our Band Could Be Your Life" book), and the aforementioned Angst are great bands and their albums are out of print (actually, Saccharine Trust's albums might not be); it's pretty sad, considering that Soundgarden's SST album, which in my humble opinion sucks, is still in print.

Don't forget the Volcano Suns, a quality post-punk band led by drummer/singer/songwriter Peter Prescott. All their albums, including the SST stuff, are sadly out of print. |

Yeah, the Volcano Suns are a band I've always wanted to hear as I'm a pretty big Burma fan.

Don't forget about the garbage put out by SST. Especially Merrill Ward-related crap like Overkill and SWA. Ciccone Youth, Tom Troccoli's Dog-- not everything was of the caliber of the Meat Puppets and Husker Du! |

I'm not going to deny that there was a lot of shit put out by SST; I mentioned Soundgarden's first album, for example. Negativland, for all of the press attention they received for the whole U2 fiasco, fucking sucked. However, I honestly don't think there's been an independent label since SST that has really, I dunno, completely connected with fans. Sub Pop - maybe, but they're probably always going to be known as the label that broke grunge through, which is sad, because they've released some great stuff (Beachwood Sparks are fuckin' great), and perhaps K Records. Not saying that there's a lot of great record labels out there right now, but they all seem to be regionalized (KRS out of Portland, Touch & Go out of Chicago) - SST was great because they released countless of bands from across the nation (which actually could be a bad thing at times, I suppose).

If you really wanna hear the Suns and you've got any out-of-print stuff or bootlegs you think I might be interested in, email me and maybe we can work out a trade. |
