I have a small, (very small) band in ga called "Kudzu" I write most of the songs and I get frustrated when I can't write songs like the artists I really like, such as Frank Black and Ween and R.E.M.. Not that I would copy them to the "t" but I would like their influence to show. That's why it blows my mind when I try to emulate frank blacks' style. I can never figure it out. 1. The first reason is that you're guitar style is one you have used since the Pixies. On a lot of songs like Alec Eiffle ( that's the one that comes to my mind at this time) has a broken record effect to it that I don't think any artist could do. Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam said that you threw out alot of bars. That's what you do on a lot of songs you like start and end on the same chord and then throw out a measure or something. It took me forever to figure out these songs. When I first hears the pixies I thought you didn't know how to play your instrument, but as I kept on listening I realised 'man this guy is a genius', he's dared to do something that no other artist would touch (mainly because even if they could do it it would'nt be profitable because no one could figure it out. 2. Your lyrics evoke the strangest and most surreal images i have ever heard since R.E.M. in the early years. How do you come up with all these phrases and sometimes seemingly made up words. I was just wondering how you developed this style, what artist you admire uses these techniques Your music has in a way freed me from from the evil empire called radio and I thank you. I don't feel pressured to like any type of music that I don't want to like. Oh yeah speeking of R.E.M. i'm probably going to Athens in Nov. to see your show. It will be my first.

i definitely agree. one thing that franks music has done for me is completely free me from listening to the radio. i used to try to keep up with all these new bands and listen to the radio and be cool and all that and i am from ga too so you know what i am talking about when i say that i am a freshmen in high school with all these kids around me listening to korn and puddle of mudd and papa roach and all these other crappy bands but i am free from that and i have finally come to understand that 99x just sucks. the only radio that i listen to now is online at kexp in seattle. they play frank, the pixies, sonic youth, lou reed, velvet underground, and the only NEW music (which for the most part all of it sucks) they play are good bands like the vines. i am also planning on going to the show at 40 wattwhich will be my first fb show and i cant wait. it feels like i am getting ready to go to heaven and see god or something just getting to see frank and the caths and also dave lovering in person. |

throwing out bars-clipping beats off(sometimes IN the pattern, sometimes 1 by 1)- he did have a profound impact on my songwriting, though I'm sure he wasn't the first to do these things he WAS the one that took it to a more listenable-not-prog-rock table. A genius???? DEFINATELY!!!!!!!!!!! Changed my life?? yup. even if godflesh is my other favorite... damn...
