First time posting here, but I've been a FB & the C's fan for awhile. Tonight's show was pretty incredible... it was an epic. Reid Paley came on and began his set, and about 6 or 7 songs in Frank joined him on stage and they began trading songs. After a few rounds Frank had an idea that they duet on a song... but since neither knew any of the other's material, they were going to play different songs at the same time. Reid didn't quite get it, but after quite a bit of humorous coaxing on Frank's part it was done, to beautiful results.
Then it was up to Frank to carry the evening, and he did... I didn't keep track of the set but it must have hit 40 songs. Pretty much everything you could want from a Frank Black show at this point... numbers included Robert Onion, California Bound, Cold Heart of Stone, All My Ghosts, Valentine and Garuda, Bartholomew, Bullet, Cactus, Manitoba... the list goes on. The encore was Skeleton Man, Southbound Bevy, Farewell Bend, Where is My Mind, and Wave of Mutilation...
I couldn't ask for more. It was brilliant. The bonus was that when I saw FB & the C's last year at Bowery Ballroom and Warsaw Frank barely said a word besides introing the band, but tonight he actually managed to chat up the crowd a bit.
I wish every Frank Black fan would have been able to be there. It was not to be missed. |

What an amazing show. To the girl who met me at the front and said she was on this forum -- I forgot your screen name! But anyway, it was great to share that show with you, among all the stiffs in the house! What a rare, rare opportunity that was! Its times like last night that I realize how spoiled I am living in NYC!

Would be interested in a tape or cd for trade of some sort. I have some of my own very old tapes of other artists (bob mould acoustic)
My wife saw FB at Warsaw last Nov. and came away saying he was pretty boring but we both walked away from last night pretty friggin ecstatic. I have to admire R. Paley staying on stage as long as he did. From FBs first chorus, it was apparent that FB is touched by something bigger than just 'talent' whereas Reid Paley is an earnest and strong performer, even all his bellowign could not compare with FBs singing or guitar playing.
I was sitting at the rightmost (stage left) table, second couple back from the stage. The guy infront of me was trying to write down the set list - he almost ran out of paper....
In 20 years of show - that was definitly a top 10, greater than the last pixies show I saw.

I agree, fantastic show. Charles was in a good mood and not only spoke alot, but even told us that the reason he usually doesn't speak is because his songs are so short, and he doesn't want long pauses in between so the audience feels the need to clap every three minutes.
This was in front of an audience that *wanted* to clap after each song!
Great, great show. It was an honor to be there. |

Just stopping by to say YES, it was an incredible show. Thanks for posting that setlist, (i swear he ended with where is my mind.... and that crazy mocking tone on the last lines... no.. well, there was a two drink minimum and I'm a lightweight, so I could be a bit foggy there.) IN-KREDible show. It got a little anoying when the more enthusiastic peeps (not that I don't love singalongs and enthusiastic peeps,) but some guy was VERY into playing the drum parts from the recordings on his KNEES and at times it actually was louder than Frank (who was messing with the time and phrasing as usual so It didn't line up as the "drummer" had planned. A bit too much sauce I suppose, for drummer not frank. FB held his liquore like the hoover dam.)

It was a great show. Seeing him alone up there was very exciting, but at the same time somewhat strange and bizarre. The western shirt and the velvet background, and the tables in a radial arrangement made him look completely straight out of a David Lynch movie. The crowd was super quiet, but there was one guy who was head banging along even during I'll be blue…very odd. On top of that I was sitting by his brother whose resemblance to Charles is amazing, the only difference was the Bill Clinton hairdo. That was creepy. He also had a set list, which became useless once he got going, since he barely looked at it after a couple of songs into the show, oh well…at the end somebody grabbed it, anyone here? The song selection was great, my personal highlight: western star, plus the portion between all my ghosts and brackish boy. They all blended perfectly and his voice sounded great, the man is too fucking good. Oh yeah, one more thing: I noticed that he didn't have his wedding ring on.

What gave me away? Was it the stiffs comment? I was sitting among some people who looked so bored they couldn't have known who Frank let alone Reid was. I wonder how they came to be at this show. Maybe they were some "industry" folk.
Anyway, yes, I must be the 'headbanger' in question. I do tend to get a bit carried away when in the presence of Frank Black music. My apologies to anyone annoyed by my exuberance. I had no idea anyone besides me could hear my knee-drumming! I guess I should remember that I'm not at home alone, but what can I say.... I LOVE THIS MAN'S MUSIC!

I assume that is probably for guitar-playing reasons. Rings are clunky things to be wearing on your fretting hand. Or on your picking hand too, for that matter. |

What an excellent show! All the songs were so great... I felt blessed to be there. Some of the highlights for me were Humbolt, All my Ghosts (which I adore hearing live lately), and Nadine. I saw the show in Ft. Lauderdale recently, where FB&theCs did an amazingly rocking set and Nadine was amongst the wildest numbers. To hear the same song here, all slowed down, old-school blues stlye, was chilling. What a versatile song-- what a versatile performer!
I think he made that comment about his songs being so short right before (or after?) Bartholomew... which actually WAS really short! BTW I've noticed he's a lot more talkative onstage during his solo shows than when he's with the Catholics.
I liked the 'sophisticated' setting (even with the tacky velvet 'Fez' background). It was a different way to enjoy a Frank show, and I think it suited this type of performance really well. Alright, to be honest I felt a little restrained at first by the seating and the audience vibe, but after a little while (and a couple of shots-- that Reid is a bad influence!) it seemed just right.
Matt-- I was probably that girl you met, but I'm bad at names too! |

langdonboom,
i was talking to my friend i was at the show with and i was saying that a few years ago i totally would've been you sitting there flailing my arms about and leg drumming, so don't feel too bad. its just that in that type of situation (a mellow, solo acoustic gig), people are trying to really enjoy the MUSIC and there really isn't much to do besides look at mr. black in such a small setting. i wasn't sitting behind you, so i wasn't bothered, but if there was a guy back there, an equally huge FB fan, who was having his vision obscured by your moving around and his sonic enjoyment muffled by the leg drums, i could understand why he might be a little upset. if this was a club where everyone was standing and the full band was playing at a loud volume, i'm sure no one would have minded, but being in that particular situation, where 90% of the audience is seated, i could see why people might get a bit frustrated. that being said, i'm glad you enjoyed the show so much - i know i sure did.

I agree with Broken Face. Although I, along with most of the audience I suppose, knew the words to all the songs, I just didn't feel like singing along that nite. I felt the vibe was just more laid back -- just listening to Charles and his guitar.
However, it was nice to see langdonboom having such a good time. Even if it was after a couple of shots of Jack!
I must confess I was at langdonboom's table (I'm the stiff in the suit who was sitting across from you) and our table was a bit lame -- with one guy reviewing his PDA every few minutes during the show and those girls in the front row that got up and left during Charles set! |

Hi guys.
I uh, recorded the fez show. I got probably 3/4 of it if not more. I missed the encore and the first few songs he played due to short tapeness. The sound's probably not excellent but decent enough for my listenin ears.
I haven't converted it over to mp3 or anything yet, in fact I'm not so sure I can, but we'll see. It's the only bootleg I've got, so it's my one bargaining chip if anyone's got any neat recordings. And even if they don't, because whatev.
Does anyone have a version of Monkey Gone to Heaven that they played in the fall tour, the one w/ just frank singing against 2 steel guitars? Man was that good. Not necessarily for trading, I'm just curious. Because it was good. |

See, if people didn't horde all their stuff for trade only, we wouldn't have you feeling compelled to withhold it. But I suppose I understand where you're coming from, just boils the blood a little when you see these people with huge trade lists and it just goes against my whole philosophy to keep it to yourself when you probably paid nothing for it (in the case of CD swaps, you give a CD, you get a CD, so you're still netting nothing) and there are people who share everything they have in the hope that others do the same that would like it and who you have inevitably used along the way to get your gigantic collection.
Back before the internet was anywhere near graphical and the www was still done using VT100/102, we had these things called BBSes, which were public/private boards much like this, with a message section and a files section. Some of them operated on a ratio - for every meg you upload, you can download two or something to that effect. Others operated on the principle that people appreciated that you had the stuff available, that leeching (taking without EVER giving and/or hogging up the phone line so others couldn't get on to the BBS) was bad, and that there should not be ratios. The sites with ratios inevitably had less variety, users, and success than the BBSes where everyone just shared.
It's called synergy. Look it up.
<whew> There. Now I've gone on my first rant this evening... |

langdonboom... goddamit. nah. I'm over it. I totally get the idea of getting sooo into a show. But I didn't see any stiffs there. just a bunch of people who paid good money who were just transfixed by the man. It was an intense show. I don't blame you for getting into it, but you seemed to be trying to be the center of attention. (by accident, alcohol does that) it is not cool to be the center of attention at an fb show unless you are FB. I was at the table mirroring the one you sat at near the end. you weren't in my way visually, but you were louder than frank. Anyway. I still loved the show. Man it was good. Looked like the wedding ring was on a chain on his neck.
good table I ended up at too. cool folks.

Apparently Jeremy (from The Bennies) went to a karaoke bar with Frank Black for 3 hours after the show, but doesn't remember a thing cause he was so drunk...like, how can you forget something like that? Alcohal is evil! |

It wasn't actually a "karaoke bar" - apparently the Fez does karaoke in the upstairs bar late at night, and that's where everybody was hanging out after the show. (I stayed around long enough to ensure that there was going to be no FB karaoke action before I left...)
But yeah, I was there! It was lovely. |

by the way, i agree, it was great.. one of my top 5 FB experiences. just wish i could have stayed for the whole show. |

Hey robotblood -- I am the superfan!
Seriously, the girls who left did not look old enough to be married, so I don't think it was even you. Unless you and your wife are both young college-aged-looking women.
And, I stand by the fact that sitting in the front row (the first seat on both sides of the table!) and then leaving during the show is a little lame. They should have at least pretended to be going to the bathroom and spread the getting up times apart. They wouldn't even have to pay the bar tab then! |
