Would you download the new Frank album if an advanced copy was leaked out on the net? Or would you wait to buy the album?
Having downloaded Frank Blacks last two albums during the summer (i bought both BLD and DW) i would say i would not let curiousity become the best of me. I will definetely wait for the album. |

Before or after having read sarahspinart's assessment of the album, I would not be able to contain myself - I'd have to get it. Though, I'd have to pay for it. His is the music I feel obliged to pay for. |

A music industry friend sent me promos of the last two as a surprise, and I was almost (for, like, 5 seconds!) disappointed just because I was prepared to wait it out for the release date. However, I did end up buying both BLD and DW as soon as I had the cash. I passed the promos on to someone who might not have sought out any FB&TC on his own in hopes that he might get hooked.
Anyway, I would most likely wait for the release, but if I couldn't resist a download, I'd still buy the new one eventually. |

Yeah, we were going to see him in concert in Portland and we had a few advance MP3s burnt onto disks and it helped my friend who had listened to them many times prior to the road trip, but didn't do much for me until the way back. But it kind of wrecks the excitement when you do (and there's absolutely no question that you DO) buy the next album. Would I download them in advance? No. Would I be able to resist? No.
Take that as you will. |

from the perspective of someone who sees just how much work goes into that album's release, my gut reaction is "nooooooooo!!" particularly because that leak means that someone's abusing their right to have a promo copy (there's a shock), and because there are in fact a lot of people who will download music and like it and still think nothing of not buying the album. there are people who even feel that this means they're "beating the system" because they don't understand that people who make music generally do not make a lot of money. and that's awful and incredibly frustrating on about a zillion different levels.
from a fan perspective (i.e., someone who will buy the album when it comes out anyway), though, i totally understand wanting to do so - and there have been a number of times when i have. in a few cases, it serves to tide me over (example: downloading the new Wrens album two weeks before preorders shipped when I wasn't sure *when* they'd ship.) in others, i've been immediately disappointed (see: new liz phair album.) in general, though, i think it's really hard to understand an album if you're not hearing it for the first time in whole, *on* cd (how many people rip mp3s at a full 320bps? not many. some people don't notice, but that makes a huge difference to me.) and having something to be really looking forward to and really excited about is worth it to me. and that feeling of buying a new album and bringing it home and getting that stupid sticky topspine off and racing to the stereo is fucking priceless, as far as i'm concerned. because music should always feel that exciting.
and august will see an mp3 or two on the spinART site, and i want to set it up so if you preorder the album, it should ship so that it gets to you on the release date and maybe you get a free poster or something. i'm not sure how i'll work that yet, but i do want that option to be available for people who don't have a good record store that they can go to on the day of release.
(ps i dont usually check here unless i'm looking for somethin' - today i want to hear about how last night's tmbg show was!!! why is no one posting about it!? - but if i don't reply to something and somebody has a question you can always email me.) |

Thanks again Sarah..... do you think that Spinart will be able to deliver to China??? Obviously I am faced with the prospect of everyone having the album before me as the Chinese mail service is not the speediest in the world..... I will definately buy it from Spinart if you could send it here though.......
I downloaded DITS about a month before it came out, but still bought it. Like people have said the money goes to Frank so thats pretty important, also its nice to have a legitimate cd with the artwork and the lyrics etc etc..

Even if I did get the album ahead of time I know I'd buy it when it was officially released. There's just something about having the official release that's comforting....... |

Simple question... support the artists you love... buy it. Whether you download it early or not is irrelevant. |

I never download albums before they're released, it's like opening your presents all on Xmas eve. I haven't downloaded the new Radiohead even though I'm dying to hear it. However, since Frank is my favorite, I'll probably download two or three random songs as "singles" to play, that's what I did with BLD and DW...the prosect of 30 new FB songs in the stratosphere was too much. |

Downloaded 'em first on the last two because I had to order them online to avoid a truly horrific markup at the local stores. Would do again. Of course, these days I can't afford to buy anything at all besides food, so we'll see what happens... |

I downloaded 100 mp3's of weezer working on their 4th album I loved them, but I can't say I really listened to the finished result. I do have it on cd, but the work in progress really spoiled everything. So nowadays I tend to don't do that anymore. Only when you really have to, like:
FB plays a show in your hometown on tuesday His new record is out on thursday Damn! I want to recognize every song, so I'd download it
that what I did when Throwing Muses came to Holland And right I was! They played 70% new songs, most of the crowd didn't know the songs and thought they were bad.

I'm with Itchload, I never download albums in advance. It totally cheapens the experience. I wait till the day they come out and buy em at the store (however, I haven't been doing this much lately since the closest store is FYE, and they charge out the ass for a fuckin CD...when I move to State College, there are plenty of alternatives). It's the experience of cracking open the plastic, putting the disk in, and thumbing through the book. |

as a frank addict i'm very weak. i'd pay to download it, then i'd pay for the originals when they came out. i bought the slim's show just to get massif centrale and it was definately worth it (the rest of the show is great as well). i like the idea of pre-ordering and getting it delivered on the day of. it would be nice if forum members with over 100 posts could get a pre-ordered copy right away. :) |

I probably won't download any songs because I have a few on bootlegs, and I do like to be surprised. As a general rule, I don't have any problem with downloading, because I consider it a great way for me to learn about new artists, whose music I later buy.

Exactly - downloading music only hurts the commercial sector - the artists are getting the exposure that the radio denies them, and even though I may have a full album of MP3's, I'll still go out and buy the album if I like it. Though usually, it's a few songs and then I want to buy the album. |

Getting back to the original question - i would download it. (nya nya) And i doubt it would dampen the experience any - it's really only in your head if you think it sounds any better holding the CD (unless it's a crappy encoding, which seems less common these days..) |

I never download anything. When I was in college I did (mostly rare stuff that I later bought/still intend to buy hard copies of when I find them), but don't have the time anymore. I listen to a lot of music and have plenty to occupy my ears prior to release dates. I can wait.

Not entirely, but for the most part: most of the time, putting something out on vinyl means losing a lot of money. There are exceptions, but rare ones, ex: the Apples in stereo, Bis, MC Honky, and we're releasing a limited edition vinyl of the new Eels record in June. Most of the time, it just doesn't sell enough to make it worthwhile, and the artist and the label both lose money after having wasted a lot of time and energy on it.
There are still a bunch of Pistolero LPs that you can order from our online store though! |

It's not a picture disc.
Maybe you're thinking of the old "on the 8th day..." site. They had a picture of a kid in a cowboy hat and maybe made it sound like it was a pic disc image. The cowboy hat kid is just one of the circular labels. It's regular old black vinyl.

I'll always buy from the band themselves when they are touring. If I like what's on stage, I'll get a disc. Plus you know the cash goes right to them. If that is not possible, support your local indie record shop. Many of these shops are also online if you don't have one nearby. If you just gotta hafta get it right now off the web, fine, just don't get it at a FUCKING WAL-MART. |

... And I am just too friggin busy to eat up tons of download time to get a disc I can pay $15 bucks for if I can just wait. When you get past all the ethical concerns (which are important to me, but I know not to everybody), time is money and I don't have the time to waste. It's worth $15 to just pick it up when its ready, with album art and all, mastered, etc. This is also why I don't complain about "shipping costs" when buying over the 'net. 99/100 times if I took the time to get the kid in teh car, drive out to whereever, wait in line with jumpy 4-year-old for checkout. blah blah blah, it's WORTH paying shipping costs to complete my transaction in five minutes and have it delivered to my door.
I have enough music in my house that I can wait for a new release of an artist. Its not like everything I own suddenly goes stale just because Frank Black or Robyn Hitchcock just laid down some tracks.
I'm also in the school of thought (can you tell what my day job is) to NEVER get version 1.0 of anything, or worse, Beta. Yuck. Let someone else work out the bugs! Call me indifferent, but I just don't have the time!

I'd probably download a few tracks, but not the whole thing. I'd definitely buy the album when it came out, though.

Indie record shops, but not used record shops, right? The used re-sells just go into the shop-owner's pocket, right? Same deal with used bookstores, I guess. If you're not on foodstamps or heavily in debt, it's probably a good idea to buy your favorite author's books new and legit. |

Good point , Pioneer. But try finding anything like a new FB disc at a resale shop. There are just too many other ways to get stuff without giving the Big Chain Stores any business.... And no, Wal-Mart probably would not stock FB, 1) Because he's good. 2) The band is named the Catholics. 3) There are words their censorship board do not understand. 4) Some are even Spanish. 5) There's a track called Smoke Up.

Well, for what it's worth, all FB&TC albums except DITS are available at Wal-Mart, including self-titled & TOTY. They got the whole Pixies backcat too.
Coming from one of the very poorest states in the union and the one from which Wal-Mart originates, I have to say that, although I certainly understand and share your distaste for the chain and its business practices, it is one of the few places that allows the poor to have some reasonable facsimile of what everybody else has. I guess that from a Marxist perspective, that's just delaying the revolution and the poor should be above the materialism that has consumed the rest of society. On the other hand, my dear old mama (who was born in the Depression in the Texas panhandle in the early 30's) is quick to point out that there's something a little classist about poking fun at folks who just plain don't either have a choice or don't know any better. I can order off the internet (and I will), but in the little town where I live, if you don't shop at the W-M Supercenter, you either go without or go to another town to get what you need in most cases. |

I'll buy music from whatever place has the best price. That's the only thing I care about when buying records.
And used book/record stores are a fine invention.
I like Wal-Mart for groceries. They don't do that creepy "discount card" thing that almost all the other chains do. |
