AHHH! The man will be here next week for two nights and it is already sold out. It is a super small club (only 50 tix per night). This is so horrible, my heart is broken! If anyone has a ticket to spare, please please please email me. I will pay dearly!

Ah Ramona, you were there when I saw him last month and our picture together did not work out. I feel your pain. Plus, I found out there was a secret show (way smaller venue) that I didn't even know about. Frank could have told me when he had his arm around me, damn I knew I should've worn a sluttier outfit (joke).
But here's a chance, when I went to see Radiohead here for the Bends at a University pub we didn't have tix. My brother and I sat outside pouting listening to them when the ticket takers decided to let us poor souls in. So my advice is to look pathetic and wear a short skirt. ;) |

Who's in charge of updating the tour dates section of fb.net? Because the dates of the March/April tour are still there, whereas the forthcoming gigs should appear.

Where is this at? How did you hear about it? Any word of a Providence appearance? I think Carolynanna is funny. I need a beer.

This is at a club called Zuzu - which is REALLY REALLY small, and is next door to a much bigger club (The Middle East) in Cambridge. I don't understand why they chose such a small venue and WHY no one knew about it ahead of time. It was advertised on a poster in the club and on the website (www.mideastclub.com) for a day and when I called they were already sold out. It will probably be full of industry/radio types because apparently no FANS actually heard about it.
Grrr. |

The irony is so painful, I get out of college a day or two before that and live right near the middle east. It's probably just Frank and his acoustic guitar. My friends are chastizing me already because I'm the one who is supposed to get heads up on stuff like this. |

Well, maybe I will see you standing outside as well. ?
It is very ironic - becuase I have been wishing Frank would come back to Boston soon. Now there are TWO dates super close to me and it is sold out. Oy.
Que sera sera, I suppose. {:(] |

I just went to the Middle East and got 4 tickets for Saturday's show, May 31st. However, I actually can't be there on Saturday. What I would like to do is swap these tickets for tickets to BOTH Thursday and Friday. If anyone has tix to Thus or Fri and doesn't mind going on Sat, or if anyone has an extra ticket to Thurs or Fri and would like to go Saturday as well, (and live in the Boston/Cambridge area) respond back and let's make a deal. |

I went to the show last night. Incredible. It was a really small place, but they didn't pack everyone in, so it was very spacious and comfortable. I was just leaning against the bar watching the show. It was great.
He just came in through the front door around 11:30 and set up. He actually looked towards me and a couple of guys I was standing with and asked our opinion on the sound levels, which was cool. He started with Whiskey in Your Shoes and ended with Black Rider. He finished playing around 1:40 am, but took a break in the middle. During his break, he came and sat next to me at the bar. It was pretty cool to have The Man slide up next to you at a bar and ask how you’re doing. I simply responded “good thanks” and didn’t try to engage him in conversation. I just didn’t know what to say without sounding like a dork. A guy I met at the show actually is friends with Frank’s cousin so I stood with them while they had a nice conversation about that. He was very nice and cordial. One thing that was weird was that the bartender charged him for his first drink. I think the second one was on the house, but I thought it was odd to see Frank reaching into his pocket to pay for his drink. (Single malt scotch straight up, by the way) I was trying to get money out to buy his drink but wasn’t fast enough. So I tried to buy him his second drink just before he started playing again, but it appeared that the bar didn’t charge him for that one.
It was so cool to see him in that environment. I saw him 12 years ago as Black Francis at Nighstage in Cambridge, MA where it was just him and his guitar and it was nice to see him play a solo show like that again. Below are the songs he played. I don’t remember the order he played them though. I may be missing a new song or two and I can’t recall if he played Valentine and Garuda or not. I think he may have.
Abstract Plain All My Ghosts Are You Headed My Way? Out Of State Bill Radcliffe (aborted after a few attempts) Black Rider California Bound Cold Heart Of Stone How You Went So Far Jane The Queen Of Love Brackish Boy Bullet Cactus Goodbye Lorraine Headache I Gotta Move I'll Be Blue Manitoba Horrible Day Humbolt County Massacre My Favorite Kiss Nadine New House Of The Pope Don't Clip Your Wings Nimrod's Son Robert Onion Sister Isabel The Snake Wave Of Mutilation Monkey Gone To Heaven Mr. Grieves Western Star Whiskey In Your Shoes

Hey I was there... ALL THREE NIGHTS! I bought tickets at the bar tues night when I went to see Frank Morey then went back on Wed afternoon when my buddy told me Saturday went on sale.
The shows were completely mind blowing. Frank you are incredible!
On Thursday- I was front and center two feet from Frank, on Friday next to the juke and Saturday behind ramona (I saw you request Valentine) next to the mirror.
For everyone who missed out- Cheer up...
I made recordings with my minidisc. If you have high speed internet let me know and I'll send you a link.

From The Boston Globe 6/3/2003 MUSIC REVIEW Former Pixies leader shows warmth, range
By Tom Kielty, Globe Correspondent, 6/3/2003
When indie-rock deities are mentioned, Frank Black can stand toe to toe with anyone. His Boston-based Pixies were at the forefront of the early '90s alternative-rock explosion. Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was worried that his band's breakthrough hit, ''Smells Like Teen Spirit,'' too closely mimicked a composition by Black (then known as Black Francis). The Pixies played their last show in 1992 as U2's opening act. Radiohead recently proclaimed them among its three biggest influences. So all that seemed left for Black was to ride off into the sunset, and to an extent he did, relocating to Los Angeles. The funny thing was he never stopped writing songs that were equal to his earlier work: catchy but occasionally caustic, eccentric yet accessible. On Thursday night at ZuZu (a tiny room within the Middle East in Cambridge) Black returned to perform for the first of three nights in front of an intimate crowd that numbered under 60. And it was the post-Pixies portion of his career that the musician focused on.
Beginning with an impromptu sound check, Black played with the ease of a coffeehouse troubadour. Throughout the evening he was not afraid to stop a song and explain a verse, or its origin, and then step right back into the melody. He regaled the audience with a few ''VH1 Storytellers''-style anecdotes, but for the most part let his gift for blowing the dirt off earthy melodies with unique chord changes tell the story.
Much of Black's recent solo material has carried a rootsy vibe reminiscent of Neil Young in his ''Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere'' era. It is a style that showcases the warmer side of Black's range as a singer, and in these intimate confines he shone. With its stomping melody, ''Out of State'' was a ringing triumph, and the preannounced key change of onetime radio hit ''Headache'' brought Black to a gorgeous high.
On prominent display in this setting was Black's gift for wrapping intelligent lyrics of lost love in a wonderful tangle of surreal imagery. ''California Bound'' began with an admonition. ''Don't worry,'' he intoned ruggedly, ''there's no need for you to hide among the trees.'' By the song's climax, this confident advice had descended into desperation, with Black plaintively pleading for his muse to not worry, his falsetto soaring.
Pixies songs were scattered throughout the set and, stripped down, they further proved their creator's genius. The menace of ''Nimrod Son'' was topped by the enthusiastic take of ''Monkey Gone to Heaven'' with Black playfully advising, ''Check this out,'' before nailing the signature solo. The memorable hook of ''Wave of Mutilation'' was even more defined when played acoustically.
Perhaps the greatest tribute paid to Black was the rapt attention the audience paid him over the course of the two-hour, 35-song set. Not a single Pixies request was offered by a respectful crowd content to listen to where the local legend has gone since leaving the scene he helped establish. |
