I mentioned this in another thread, (the "tell us how you discoverd the pixies" thread), but honest to God, my last vinyl before I broke down and bought a CD player (then joined Columbia House for the umpteenth time to give my collection a quick boost and have something to play on it other than the sampler CD that came with it) was the Pixies' "Doolittle".
Turn the tables, what was everybody's first CD? Not first album (for those of us old fogies, the first album I had was the Beatles' Sgt Pepper, stolen from my big brother, the first album I bought with my own money was Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"). But that day when you said, "OK, I'm buying a CD player", and had to run out and buy something whilst waiting for the initial Columbia House shipment of your 12 CD's for $1.98 (plus seven hundred dollars shipping and "handling", whatever the hell "handling" is).
Mine was a used copy of Nico's "Live Heroes" and Robyn Hitchcock's "I Often Dream of Trains" |

I know, that's where I got the idea. I started thinking about what you said and thought it'd be interesting to find out other people's.
My first CD I bought with my own money for my parents cd player was With The Beatles, the Beatles second album.
I rode my bike up to the Kmart and bought it for 12.99.
Before that, the first 45 I bought was Genesis "Man on the Corner" for 65 cents at peaches record store. I rode my bike there as well.
Wish I excercised as much as I did then. |

Uhm the first cd I got was ''Swamp Thing'' by the Grid It's some techno or house record with a banjoplayer on it I do enjoy it now and then.
The first cd I bought was 'The Miracle' by Queen...
Damn... I've got every Queen album not on cd though I bought a lot of vinyl second handed pfff.... plus al those bootlegs ever see a eleven old kid buy a Queen bootleg? Man, my childhood was/is very weird..
I wish I hadn't spend(d or t?) so much money on Queen but I guess everybody needs an artist to start out with. And their first albums aren't that bad.

Ha! fucking hell Bill(Jop, Doi!) I remember when that song(Swamp Thing) came out, I remember thinking it was such a shit song, but my tatses have changed alot since then and it's not really that bad a song! My first cd was (I hope Brackish Girl likes this!) The Breeders, Last Splash as I had Pod and all my Pixies stuff on tape as well as FB/FB, I think TOTY was my second cd, it's gotten so gruby after years of handling.

Man, loads of my mates, and myself included digged Queen when we were kids...... they were the dogs bollocks back in 1986 after the release of A Kind of Magic....... Unfortunately the first band that I saw live was Bon Jovi, which is something to be ashamed about as the Jovi are one of the worst bands in the world.

1st CD was Pixies Surfer Rosa w/Come on Pilgrim. It was 1989 and I was in Okinawa Japan and just bought my first stereo system with a 6 disk CD changer. That stereo has been with me for 13 years, although I'm on my 4th CD player. My current player holds 101 CD's.

gee, you mean like you don't have to stand up and walk to the stereo to change the disc's?
101?
pfff those players cost a fortune not worth the money (well maybe it is, not for somebody in highshool, like me)
or is that the player is still in Okinawa Japan and you're in Greece so with normal players you would have to travel around the world to change the disc?
I guess I'm just jealous

I bought my first cd player 'cause at the time (1988)i could't find these 3 records on vinyl: 1 - Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For rotting Vegetables 2 - Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of.... 3 - Metallica - Master Of Puppets These 3 discs costed me almost as much as the cd player...Thanks at the guy who invented the cdr.... Denon too, that cd player still works...Japanese sure know how to do electronics...Except for those bandits at Sony that is...Sony stuff sucks...Costs a lot and it works your warranty period + 1 day then explodes...
