Since I noticed on another thread people were asking why Frank doesn't play certain tunes anymore, I wondered what your favourites are?

I got a real kick at the Reading Festival & at the Garage last year when Frank did 6-60-6 live - the energy the guy emits was just amazing.

Anyone else have a song that got a whole new spin or is more compelling since hearing it live?

Fiddle Riddle...I believe it was on the KB Malmo show from Sweden I've seen mentioned somewhere in another thread.
Pedal steel and an upbeat...damn what a way to re-hash an oldie that I never really appreciated the first time around.
Can't argue with Mike's Superabound pick, though.

Tongue in cheek? Nah. Just adding a fresh spin on some old tunes, my friend. That's like saying that because Fiddle Riddle's a country song instead of a reggae song now is because Frank's playfully mocking it. Not so, I'd venture to say.

Yeah tounge in cheek doesn't really seem like the right way to describe it. He's just updating it to his current sound in a way.

Being from Australia I've never been to a frank show, but i do have a fine collection of bootlegs, Gouge Away is always great to hear with its extended intro, although that is helped by the fact that you can always hear the crowd going berserk. It's weird that Rich or whoever plays the lead plays it differently than joey in the build up to each verse.... Other faves: Skeleton Man (packs a great punch live, was never one of my faves off pistolero but is now), love Fiddle Riddle as well

I was at the Garage as well in August of last year, and I was well impressed with their performance... especially when they did I Gotta Move, Billy Radcliffe and Speedy Marie. Although saying that (and I ain't one of these 'Reform the Pixies' fans) Gouge Away was the highlight as it is one of my, if not most favourite song. Live that song kicks fucking arse more than anything Ive heard ever. That is Franks coolest song I reckon.

Czar on the Black Sessions is really cool. A lot of people don't like this live album but I do. Fave live song: I loved how they opened the '96 concerts with the Marsist, everyone jumped at the same time on the distortion pedals, it sounded awesome.

I love Speedy Marie & Calistan live.
If it takes all night is also a good choice, with everybody shouting 'If it takes all night' at the end of the song (band & audience).

Bullet was exceptional (Liquid Rooms - Edinburgh, last August). And to open with Crackity Jones - awesome.

FB opened with Crackity Jones at the Garage, I think it was a day before the Edinburgh gig.... was he wearing a sleevless lumberjack jacket?? It was a bizarre choice of clothes but that gig and Sheffield on the DITS tour kicked arse. At the Sheffield gig, when Frank had played the final song (Remake/Remodel) of the encore, the crowd would not stop the applaud and Frank and the band just stood there for what felt like an age grinning like Cheshire cats in appreciation. Thats was one special moment, Ive been to loads of gigs and seen loads of great bands but nothing compares to this moment. The man is a genius!!!

My favorites songs live are Freedom Rock, the beginig with lot of drums (listen to Black Sessions), and I remember of TOTY's tour, on Ole for Mulholland, there was flashes (stroboscope in french)with the guitar just before he stared to sing.

I have to say not having seen the Pixies live, when Holiday Song kicked off at The Garage I thought I'd jump out of my skin!

It's been a favourite of mine for so long that I never thought I'd actually get to hear it live.

RE: Gouge Away, for those of us who made it to near the stage at Reading the ENTIRE crowd got going with the opening strains and stayed there the whole way through the rest of his set - I'm sure that he created more than a few converts by opening with such an classic gem...

Stu, you were right about the sleeveless Lumberjack shirt, tho' I think he changed for one of the encores?

Funny thing about all this is the Garage holds at most about 400 people, and its a dank airless squalid place, somewhat reminiscent of the Cavern Club in Liverpool, so I thought it pretty fitting that he littered his set with Pixie numbers.

Sounds very like the Edinburgh gig -even down to the same outfit! Although he didn't finish with Remake/Remodel Frank and the band soaked up the applause in exactly the same way - with the occasional nod of appreciation.

The first time I saw the Pixies they opened with Into the White - it was much better live. (The last time I saw the Pixies the gig was aborted after 2.5 songs, but i think I have bored you all about that already.)

EDIT - Fixed the quote (El Barto)

well hes adding a fresh spin for all the people who love his new stuff and at the same time getting back at the people who are hardcore pixies and all they want to hear is that. most of the people who are like that dont like the fact that franks "gone country" it seems, so like its almost a way to get back at them whether intended or not. so its serving two purposes, thats how i see it atleast.

Ten Percenter.... Remake / Remodel was the last song that Frank did at the Sheffield show in Feb 2001, not at the Garage the night before the liquid rooms. In fact, I am struggling to remember what the last song was (by that time I was in a hell of a state). I remember that Speedy Marie was quite near the end because I was delighted that he played it, seing as he hadn't played it the two previous times that I'd seen him.

Leah, not too sure about changing his Lumberjack jacket, but can you remember what the last song was?? Also, I was well impressed by the Pixies songs that he played in the middle of his set, Gouge away and Holiday Song, and for me it was the same as I'd never heard Holiday Song live before except as a B-Side to Debaser. Cracking gig.

At the end I hung about to see if I could catch Frank. I didn't really wait around long enough but managed to drunkenly mutter a few words to Dave McCaffrey.... along the lines of 'You guys (hic) were (hic) f*cking awesome (hic).' I'm pretty sure his reply was 'thanks, I'm glad you liked it' but I'm not too sure. I wish I had been in a better state to have a good chat with him, and maybe I would have got the chance to meet Frank as well.
