I think this is Franks best post-pixies song. Everything works. Great melody and some of his best lyrics ever. Arrangement is also stunning, notably Feldmans piano, which gaves more depth to this song. So why doesn´t Frank play St. Francis more frequently with the Catholics?

Personally, I've got to say "Dog In The Sand" is and probably will be Frank Black's best. Every song is ridiculously beautiful, the album is cohesive (songs flow well into each other)...everything about it is just "on".

The main reason I like this song is because it shows off Frank's keen sense of local history in California yet again. The whole story behind the St. Francis disaster is actually very interesting and worth reading about if you get the chance.

As a history buff, I do find the sometimes subtle, sometimes overt lyrical historical allusions as part of the appeal of Frank Black. Of course, local California history is also mentioned in DITS regarding "Llano Del Rio". Gilded-Progressive Age of American history is my favorite topic and both song subjects aren't very far removed from that era.

Was it taken at an old bathworks site in the San Francisco Bay Area, perhaps during the sessions that produced what we call SSMVGD?

Actually I got it from something I read along those lines, or at least think I did. On one of the Yahoo boards, if memory doesn't deceive. Thanks tho. - Mel |

I had read about the St. Francis Dam before "Dog in the Sand" came out, but it was FB's song that inspired me to go take a look at it. More info on it here: http://www.scvhistory.com/scvhistory/stfrancis.htm
BTW, the cover of DITS is definitely at the old Sutro Baths in SF.

It was shot in San Francisco for sure. I've been to the spot several times.
Doesn't it say that in the linear notes? From some reason I recall it saying that.

Back to the original point of this post...it's by far my favorite FB song as well, and his best, too. I have NEVER heard it played live, and it kills me! I've heard/read somewhere (probably back on the Plain) that he has trouble remembering the lyrics. I would personally volunteer to flip cue cards for our man Frank if he ever decided to play SFDD. What a song! FranknWeezer |

(thanks BLT)
This was used as the art for the single, or not?
Speaking about singles, I can't understand that Frank doesn't play this one live. For some odd reason, I think it should be in his reportoire for the same reason as why they made it a single:
It's brilliant!

Maybe this song is a little too intimate for a concert with audience and all... |
