I like to imagine FB publishing a poem volume some time... some of his lyrics (especially with the Pixies) are poetry on themselves, I think. OK, the magical music-lyric interaction gets lost, but still... you know? |

yeah that would be cool. a lot of the stuff off Bossanova is really poetic, especially the outro to the happening, that would make a great poem |

some things on Bossanova...wow. Especially Ana, Blown Away, All over the world, ...
my lips are moving if you touch my face
while we were sleeping I tried to say
with a pet at my side - God in the sky
I think Frank could even become real famous if he would devote himself to this kind of stuff. But playing guitar with it is more fun, haha... |

Whatever, we have his poetry and some amazing music to go along with it. Compared to that, who wants a book of musicless poetry. Besides, given the fact that he doesn't even think it worthwhile to put lyrics in the liner notes (thank you Jean), I find it unlikely that he would consider a project that is strictly 'lyrics' in a sense. I'm happy right where we are, as long as the lyrics keep being meaningful (and often double meaning-ful), which I'm sure they will. |

With you guys on this.
One of my fave lines has always been "we're falling apart in this lack of gravity and my heart is just a muscle in a cavity"
Nick Cave produced two volumes of his lyrics - sort of half A5 size and they are hugely readable...

I've always thought that "down to the well" was very poetic. One of my favorite Pixie lines is "her body a rocking chair for my soul"...great stuff. Here's the first couple verses and chorus, hmmmm wonder what he's talking about?
Betty always knows Betty always tells She laughing desperately She said it felt like a river inside her bones When she went down to the well
I'm gonna be with her She's gonna take me there Lead me by my hand Her body a rocking chair for my soul
I can hardly wait, baby I can hardly wait 'til we gown to the well Down to the well

I also have to say I love Billy Radcliffe - I think the line "catching blue in his eyes that were brown" is especially poetic.
That is all. |

I seem to remember reading somewhere that his high school yearbook listed his ambition to become a published poet... so perhaps his lyricism (sp? word even?) was his primary talent to begin with, as with DYlan.... |

I don't think song lyrics work as poetry. They need the music to work their magic properly.

I agree It's a different work but still FB is rocking-a-my-soul with the lyrics, enhanced by his voice. I like Sir Rockaby : How many stars girl, can you both count and then classify, I'm standing here in this big swirl singin this lullaby
I like when he sings about science in his lost-dream way. I think of this song about the black holes where gravity is compared to blackened hair catching light. Blak hole poetry where our minds are captured.

I once said a bit of Speedy Marie outro to some friends and they confused Frank Black with Catullus
they speak vaudevillian... |

Sir Rockaby is indeed wonderful.
What I'm trying to say is not that Frank Black's lyrics should be published or anything (although I would never object).
Through some of his lyrics he proved/proves himself a very gifted poet, in my opinion, in both content and form; and I am convinced that, if he would devote himself to autonomous poetry, it would be received very well by critics. Selling a lot (although that's usually very relative in poetry) and everything. |
