This review is not written by me, but posted to another board (a general music board) by a guy who saw Frank Tuesday night.

When he says "as stated below", he's referring to an earlier post he wrote saying Frank is currently "dropping by places unnanounced as he drives around the country writing songs".

----------

free show, solo acoustic - what a great evening - as stated below, he is on a road trip, and just dropped in at a local hippie bar on monday, had a few organic brews (in mason jars of course) while having some work done on a guitar, and said "mind if I play tomorrow?"

"yeah, we have room before our weekly bluegrass jam"

similar set to what he played with the full band a few weeks ago: 1 hour/30 minute break/1 hour

a few songs from the new album coming out in the summer, one standout "Manitoba"

introduced "Six-Sixty-Six" as being written by "a man from Salem, Oregon" - ???

covered "John the Revelator" by Son House (White Stripes too, right?), "Black Rider" - Tom Waits (as usual)

Pixies songs: Nimrod's Son, Cactus, Gouge Away, Wave of Mutilation, Hey, a couple others I'm forgetting.

one of the most intense moments: "so my brother called me and told me he has been going through Dad's things (pause) if you know what I mean (pause) and he found all the unregistered guns in the attic, so he had to meet with the police and take care of all that (long pause) this song is called 'Bullett'"

He made several comments about how dark and disturbing his songs are, which really came across in the solo acoustic versions.

Yeah, I'd heard from a radio interview that "Bullet" was based on a true story about his brother finding those guns in his father's house after he died. There was apparently one bullet in each of the guns.

Non-fiction is always more bizarre and interesting than fiction.

That's cool. I've always dreamed of becoming a rock star and traveling the country, playing shows along the way to cover gas/food/lodging. Frank (Black Francis) did that back in the waning days of the Pixies, too.
However it sure would be swell if he could get word out to this site/board to alert his diehard fans about the surprise shows. It might be just the thing to help shake that fan-unfriendly rep.

Anyways, it's gonna be a BITCH to get these shows onto the gigography.

As always, please drop an email if you can help add a missing show or two.

I kinda like the "fan un-friendly" rep (and I know you weren't bitching about it), even if it's not altogether true.

Unannounced shows are a-okay with me. Sometimes you just *miss* shit. It's healthy.
