Most people in Canada (that I know) totally love the Tragically Hip. They're pretty damn good, not quite my fav but pretty good. I'm wondering is this a Canadian phenomenon?
Also doesn't anyone listen to Matt Good?
Just curious. |

Not a huge Hip or Good fan (although the recent video with the trailer park boys is amusing), but, I like Sloan and Thrush Hermit quite a lot. Early OLP is good as well and Loverboy of course simply because they are rather poetic. Really mostly everyone I know "is working for the weekend"

Sloan back in the day was great. Twice Removed, One Chord To Another and Navy Blues are great albums. Their more recent stuff however... Not a big Hip fan, but Ahead By A Century is a beautiful song. Thrush Hermit definately had moments, Sweet Homewrecker is a solid album. My current favorite Canadian group is Broken Social Scene. Their new album is really amazing, I highly encourage everyone here to check it out. Their live show is pretty spectacular as well. Those noisy guys really said something to me. |

I am a fan of the Hip, but it seems too me that they have lost their edge. I would suspect that most good non-commercial Canadian bands are all but unknown to our American/Euro Friends. The world needs too know we grow fabulous musicians here. Remy Shand, Nomeansno and DOA (this is the most varied bunch of music off of the top of my head). |

Aye, i'd agree with Greg about the Hip.
Current fav Canadians..hmmm..
Martin Tielli is a god, i'd rank him higher than FB if he'd put out more songs. The Rheo's are damn fine as well.
I love Sloan, even their new stuff.
Tamara Williamson is great.
Ford Pier is wacked out, and looking forward to him and Martin in Operation Infinite Joy.
Mike O'Neill, of the Inbreds..
Ember Swift is one of my favorite performers.
And The Noisies. =) |

I was going to say Ahead by a Century too. But I also really like Grace II and Locked in the Trunk of a Car. I think Gordie tells a good story. Very gifted with the prose.
Anyways, its funny to see that not one yank has posted here, so my original question is answered.
I still like Matt Good though (although he is a bit of a prickly pear) his music in a way reminds me a little of Radiohead which I am a huge fan of except some of their latest stuff has left me behind as I am a huge fan of actual instruments. According to me, the Bends is their best album.
Where are my real friends? |

i used to be a huge hip fan. don't listen to em as much anymore though. i think i saw them about 12 times live - about 5 in venues that held less than 2000 people. i loved seeing em in a smaller setting. lots of energy- great live band. i bet a lot of frank fans would enjoy their earlier material - up to here and road apples. |

P.S.: Not really a Canadian band but everyone should check out Bettie Serveert. A Canadian singer (Carol Van Dyk). I cannot stress enough how good they are. Check the link on my profile, let me know what you think when you get a chance too hear them!! |

Forgot about the New Pornographers in my earlier post. Their first album was my cross-county ski sound track on several occasions. A recent (well relatively) album that I liked virtually every track on.
Anyone picked up their new album?

Aye, the New Porn's are pretty cool, i like their new album too, tho it's rather different from the first. There's one song that totally reminds me of Supertramp...how's that?? |

I'm a Yank ('bout 35 miles from the border in NY) and me and my dad and (especially) my english teacher dig T-Hip. I think the music's a little generic, but it all goes together very well. I like alot of the lyrics, though. Just makes you wonder what kind of great music is coming out of other parts of North America that never get exposure out of the region in which they have origionated.

Grace, too is an amazing song. Love the Hip. But like some other great Canadian bands of late, they are slipping.
1c's favorite Cdn acts:
King Cobb Steelie Eric's Trip / Elevator The Wooden Stars By Divine Right Tristan Psionic

I think Eric's Trip is pretty darn good myself. Grace too is one of my fave Hip songs too.
We have had a couple of really super cool local bands from Edmonton here (I think I wrote this on another post, sorry El Barto) like SNFU and the Smalls. |

Eric's Trip are excellent...I have two of their albums ("Love Tara" and "Purple Blue"), and I find myself going back to them every now and then over the years, surprised at how good they are. They have beauty, but also a rawness and simplicity that is refreshing compared to all the stuff out there today. |

They did break up, but essentially they just lost Julie Doiron. Rick White is still rocking out the tunes with Elevator. I saw them play in Hamilton a few weeksago and it was a trip. Their live show is like Syd Barrett buried under a mountain of distortion, but his recordings still have those lonely-depressed-sappy kinda tunes.
This is a link to a bunch of free Elevator tunes (streaming only): http://www.newmusiccanada.com/genres/artist.cfm?Band_Id=5917
