I think the Catholics have two distinct periods, the Self Titled/Pistolero era and the Dog in the Sand/BLD/DW era of right now. Which one do you guys prefer? I actually really prefer the newer era, I think the albums are much stronger and more consistent/varied. I think the first two Catholics albums are solid, and I still listen to them a lot, but there's a certain "sameness" to them that all of Frank's other work has managed to avoid.

I agree, the two periods do sime distinct. I also like the newer stuff more. I'm not sure if it's the songwriting or the playing, but something about the new albums really puts them ahead as far as I'm concerned.

The only difference to me is that the newer stuff is a little bit more relaxed and less RAWK.

I can't decide. It's all good, though Pistolero is probably my favorite.

I'd say the first three Catholics albums set a very high standard in quality, and that the latest two albums don't quite meet that standard. It's not that the roots-rock style doesn't appeal to me, I just think Mr. T is "embracing cliches" a little too much.

Pistolero is definitely my favorite Catholics album. I have to agree w/ Chris in saying that the roots-rock direction that they've gone in isn't as appealing to me. Don't get me wrong- I think the songs are excellent and I enjoy them a whole lot, but they just aren't the same as the hard-rocking days.

When I'm cruising in my car, and I want to get my head and heart pumping with some goodness, it's the hard-rocking stuff that I would put on. it just affects me in a much more visceral way.

Agreed. I almost never listen to FB&C and Pistolero. Most of the songs just sound uninspired and have that sameness you mentioned.
The self titled and Pistolero have a couple of fantastic songs in them, but these last three records are much more consistent, wich is strange because they were all released in a shorter period of time than the songs in FB&C and Pistolero. I donīt know how important a factor time (between releases) is, when it comes to an albumīs quality. Would i prefer to hear a good FB album every six months as oposed to a great one in two years? I guess it doesnīt work that way.
Frank has just been writing amazing songs lately.
By the way, am i the only one who isnīt that impressed with the new album songs?

I think their stuff keeps getting better with each new abum, but the self-titled catholics album is definitely one of their best works. I can never get enough of I Need Peace and King/Queen of Siam, Suffering, Solid Gold...Hell, all of them

Tough one to make a decision about..... Pistolero is a cracking album, and although I rarely listen to the first FB&C at the moment, when I first heard it I thought that it was the best thing that I'd heard for a long time. The new stuff is also great, but very different....... I couldn't actually make a decision on what I like best, I listen to the newer stuff more but thats because its newer I guess.

I think Dog in the Sand really opened my eyes or something.
I like the new direction better, don't know why...
Although DW is not as good as pistolero

I think that FB's post-Pixies career is more acurately divided into three segments, solo, self-titled, and the latest era. Of course, if you're just talking about FB&C's, then this point is moot, but I'd just like to point out that while I love all this stuff, I really do get the most enjoyment from his two solo albums. And then, definitely DITS. From that point, it's anybody's guess, but I guess that my inclusion of DITS puts me pro-latest stuff.

I think I prefer now as well, but some of my fave songs come from the previous era. Dog Gone, Billy Radcliffe etc

I think other posters have pretty much nailed the differences between the two: the earlier period rocked harder, but wasn't as varied. The later period is more relaxed and kind of "rootsy." I prefer the later period (especially DitS), but the earlier stuff was great as well. I'd say my absolute favorite FB album is still Teenager of the Year, though, and the self-titled comes pretty close (probably about even with DitS).
