Hey, does anyone know how long someone can live without any food, just water? I've heard 3 months, but didn't know if anyone else has a more exact answer. 3 months seems a long time. |

I think it probably depends how much body fat the person has. |

Speakin of starvin, I recently read that everyone should fast for at least a day once a month. Its because something like your body spends alot of energy processing food and you should give it a break so that it can do very important things (like detoxifying my liver) uninterrupted. Is Bill Nye around here? |

yeah this is true, my dad does it for like a week each month or something like that. He has all kinds of books on fasting and stuff, but you're supposed to do it a certain way in order for it to be healthy. Like you prepare for the fast by only eating certain foods and stuff and gradually getting ready for the fast and then when you come off of it you have to eat like specific foods and gradually get to the point where you can eat anything. It's supposed to be really healthy if you do it right but I don't care enough to do it |

Man, that reminds me, I'm hungry.
Fuck a bunch of that Atkins diet shit. You can't eat bread!
Makes you lose weight though, albeit I am sure it's due to the reduced calories you consume.
I have also heard that fasting is good for you and your body. A lot of the stuff that came from "the bible" pertains to health reasons.
Jews could only eat certain foods because of safety and health reasons and the fact that there was no tupperware or refridgeration.
Of course, I am condensing Biblical law down to one stupid sentance, but I think you know what I mean. |

This reminds me, did anyone hear of that lady who had some kind of group or cult, she said she had'nt eaten anything for years and she lived on spiritual energy or something?, one of her followers starved herself to death and I think she was or is being charged with manslaughter? Anyone else hear about that, I cant remember where I heard it?

Yeah, i think it varies from person to person, but you should be able to go at least 2 weeks without calories, and up to 2-3 months.
As it progresses, tho, your body really starts to deteriorate, lots of physiological disfunction, like blindness...
Why do you ask?? |

You can probably go a month on no food, but only a week without water.
I'm actually doing a 2 day fast on Thursday and another next week. Time to do some Spring cleanin'!

yah im pretty sure you cant go much more than a week without water, but im sure there will be some horrible side effects before you even reach the end of the week. on a side note, i think after a 100 hours of no sleep you start to hallucinate, and i bet you could even die if you go too long, though i dont think thats ever happened before.

Wow, thanks for the answers. In answer to Dave Noisy, something horrible happened and whenever sometime really bad happens I always lose my appetite, so I was wonderin' how long I could last.
in an even weirder question: How long do you think you could last by only eating yourself? I read a short steven king story "Survivor type" about a doctor marooned on an island who has to survive by amputating his body parts and eating them. At the point of having one arm and no legs he finally bit the dust. Sorry to gross you guys out, but I always thought that was the most ingenious idea for a short story, it would make a great movie! |

So the island was completely devoid of any and all plant life, bugs, etc? Palm tree bark would taste like beef jerky compared to, you know, really crudely amputating bits and pieces of myself devoid of tools or anesthetics, and then, you know, taking bites out of my somewhat charred arm or legs. Not to dump on cannibals and stuff... :) Mind you, I don't know how he'd even start a fire unless there were wood around, in which case there's probably leaves and stuff too. Maybe he likes raw toenail?
I'd love to see the movie:
INTERNAL MONOLOGUE: Well, I'm still on this really really desolate island. <camera sits on him leaning against a rock for five minutes>.
Verbal: Ah, geez, I got the munchies again. <grabs really dull rock> Well, here goes my other leg... <starts pounding away at his leg, trying to sever it for several minutes> Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. OW! Ow. Ow. Mmmmm... raw hamstring.
Alright, so I'm being a bit over the top, just seems a little strange of a story/question. I hear you on the something horrible removing all desire, compunction, and/or ability to eat. I didn't eat for just about three weeks once... I forced myself and threw up about a week and a half in... and lost 25 lbs or so. But your body won't let you kill yourself. Hopefully. Hope you're back to eating soon, it's not cool to have no appetite for a long time. |

Cult of Frank, even if hte movie was like your internal monologue, I'd still kill to see it. If I recall correctly (I read the book 10 years ago at least) there were birds and trees on the island, but he couldn't catch any of the birds and while trying he tripped on some rocks and badly broke his ankle...which might have been the catalist for him to amputate. Then maybe he just couldn't go back. |

I think if given all day, I could figure out how to catch a bird. Particularly if it meant I had to eat my leg if I didn't. |

Heh... well, that explains a bit more of it I guess. The heroin or the broken ankle. I just got a really funny picture in my head of what such a movie would be like and I thought I'd give you all access to my dementia. :) |

There's a Lemonade fast that's kinda weird: the only thing you consume is this special concoction of fresh squeezed lemons, filtered water, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper (about 10 cups or so a day i think), and it "clenses the body" of crappy stuff, supposedly. Some folks say you can do it safely for 30-40 days, but the standard is 10. I've tried it the past 2 summers cause I really like lemonade (even w/ syrup & pepper), but i always get too tired of making the damn drink, and stop after 3 days. Also, without meals to break the day up a bit, things start to be this long loopy blur. |
