See in the essential thread just about every albumn bar my fave is noted and since I only own two (Bone Machine and Alice) I'm curious as to which others from his extensive back cat. I should invest in next.
Any advice?

oh yes. closing time or - if you like to be traumatised - the mighty bone machine.
There may be no 'I' in team, but there's a 'ME' if you look hard enough. |

Not being very knowledgeable about Tom Waits and his music....does "Bone Machine" have anything to do with there being a Pixies song of the same name? Is that a little tip-of-the-hat to Tom Waits that I wasn't aware of? |

No, Bone Machine the album came out WAY after Bone Machine by the Pixies. |

I often wonder that from time to time...
But 'Surfer Rosa' was released in 1988 and 'Bone Machine' was released in 1992. I don't think Charles had a time machine during the pixies-era, but don't quote me on that.
Maybe I'll do a google search on "bone machine" and find out what it is besides a Pixies song and a Tom waits album

The swimmer must have a time machine and must have known exactly when i was going to post my response so he could beat me to it and make me look like a baffoon.

First link that came up on google was: http://www.thebonemachine.freeserve.co.uk/
It's apparently a band, obviously a newer band than the Tom Waits' Bone Machine album. The site says this about the band:
The Bone Machine sound has been compared with many bands including Metallica, Creed, Silverchair and Pearl Jam.
After reading that, you kind of wish they would change the name of their band to something else...

I always understood bone machine to be a kind of quasi-poetic take on the human body. the way all the bones in your body function in this mechanical, well-engineered manner.
so it's like an Olde-English kenning for "skeleton" basically. always thought that was kind of cool. |

oh yeah, and thank you for the clarifications, you guys. I had no idea of any chronology in terms of Tom Waits albums, so that put stuff in perspective for me. maybe Waits is tipping his hat to the Pixies? (erm...maybe not) |

I read an interview with Waits were he mentions how he got the title, something about the way the songs on the album fit together. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have to do with the Pixies |
