Which one wins....of course I initially liked #1 better, but #2 is really growing on me. |

I don't know I'd have to say one, although it does work best the way tom waits does it. But as far as covers go, I'd say one |

well frank blacks version and tom waits versions may as well be different songs really in my opinion. i think black rider 1 is the coolest though the fact that you can hear the backup vocals shouting in 2 louder is awesome. but id still say 1 i guess

It's funny, i liked a live version i heard of this song, and when i heard the album version i was let down for some reason. now i always skip black rider to get to california bound right away. Black Rider #2 is pretty cool though. Sounds like a bizarre beach party tune

I skip the first and listen to the last, but I dislike them both just like 666 which I disabled so I would never have to hear it again. |

I like the more 60's sounding Black Rider.
Those 2 songs would have worked great in an Austin powers movie.

The first one is pretty cool, the second one just bores me. Most of the time I don't listen to either, preferring to skip over the first one to get to California Bound and choosing to consider Whispering Weeds as the last track on BLD. |

both are worth listening to, the only problem with the way its set up is that if you listen to the cd through multiple times as i sometimes do, you end up hearing a similar song back to back. like if the second one was in the middle itd be spaced out:) but i guess its better since usually you only listen through once

The problem I have with it, is that unlike the live version, Frank's not the one doing the screaming. I'm not sure who the back up vocalist is, but he seems to be doing a impression of Black Francis circa Surfer Rosa. If Frank was doing the screaming, it'd be a great track. Probably more of a B-side than an album opener, but still very cool. |

i was going to say, in concert it seems like a combination between 1 and 2.. in the many shows i saw him at this year he often opened and closed with it.. but i swear to god, live, it sounds 20 times more rockin'.. after a few shows it became my favorite song, but when i got the album, i was kind of disappointed with the toned down version of it..
i assure you, when you hear it live, you'll gain a new appreciation for it. with Frank doing the insane screaming and the guitars are way harder sounding. on the ablum versions, the guitars are more in the background.. |

Although i think it's really fucking cool what he did with the second version, my vote would go with the first, overall. Both well done regardless.

#1 is fun.
For anyone who doesn't listen to Tom Waits, personally, I think "Black Rider" is actually the safest and surefire first cd to pick up if you'd like to get into 'im, and you really should.

The 1st version is nice (btw, I never liked it in concert - but since BLD I look forward to it), then by the end of the record, it's even nicer to hear it laid back. I.e. I find it not just clever that both versions bookend the album, but they're both fitting and enjoyable in different ways. "Enjoyable". Yes, I am a 70-year old listener in Nothern Maine. "I find Frank Black and his Catholics and enjoyable listen. Clams?"
How good is Bone Machine, though?! The earth died screaming... I just hope on the next record there aren't 2 shrimp songs... probably I'm alone in this opinion..

I bought that album used, started listening to it in the car, but had to take it back right away cuz there was a huge scratch on it. I haven't had the urge to buy it again from hearing a few songs on it. I'm gonna have to say Mule Variations would be the safest first CD to get. He has so many albums, so I'm sure there are numerous Tom waits albums that would be good first listens. Closing Time would be good, though he doesn't sound like that anymore and if you bought Closing Time then listenened to Blood Money you'd probably think it's a different guy.
