just got my tickets. they must have just added him this past week..
i think Frank is opening since it's "Gordon Gano plus special guest Frank Black"..
i'm guessing that he'll do a set with Dave P., or maybe even solo, and then come out and join Gano for their song, or more..
i can't wait.. The Troubador is one of my favorite venues in LA..

Yes, but there has been some confusion as to whether he was touring solo or with the band. I haven't seen a Catholics show since near the end of the Dog in Sand tour at the Troubadour. I yearn for the rock and roll. |

Naw, I missed the knitting factory and troub shows on their last jaunt through. I was playing a show with my band on the knitting factory night. The last time I met Frank, I told him that my band plays Freedom Rock in our set and he said "Oh yeah? Then maybe you can show me how to play it because I don't remember the chords any more"... Frank = the best.

We're a poppy, noisy alt-rock band called "The Midnight Castrati"... We've got a lot of Pixies influence. I play guitar, write the songs and sing and have a huge Frank Black complex with my writing... which is a good thing. I'm doing an accoustic show in a couple of weeks and the band plays around town quite a bit. I'll post the info as it comes up. |

matto, that's one of the few i missed.. i went on a major Frank Black binge earlier this year while i was unemployed.. (i still am, but that's another story).. drove up to Northern California and stayed with friends.. and caught the shows up there. took a road trip out to Tempe, AZ. for that show. and of course all the shows around here.. i'm embarassed to admit how many shows i've seen this year.. but fuck it, i can't wait to see him tonight!! (i can't believe i'll be seeing him in about 5 hours)..
i always send my "reviews" to Frank Black For President.. my yahoo group of choice for all things Frank..

everyone that's going: don't forget to look around and wonder which of these jokers is from that damn frank message board! woo pee! i'll be sporting a tweed sportjacket! come on and say hiya! and introduce me to your sister..
will try to tape it.. keep you posted.

i think i'll be wearing my groovy new short sleeve, 70's style semi-white-trash-looking shirt i got for 3 dollars the other day.. it's light orange with orange flowers on it..
and since it's the Troubador, being the stylie place that it is, i may have to go with a martini or two myself.. (instead of the usual)..
i'm going to try and take some pics. so between your recording and my pics, we should have it covered :)

hey man, i looked for you, and even asked my friend, who is not colorblind like me, but he didn't see said description, unless that was you with the the disposable camera in the front, like, right next to us?
OH, but it was a good show, no?.... it came out ok on the recording. "run" was the highlight of highlights... more later..

Frank Black, with Dave Phillips, opening for Gordon Gano Wednesday, Oct 9 2002 Troubadour, W. Hollywood
1. Jane, the Queen of Love 2. Bullet 3. Cactus 4. Horrible Day 5. Crackity Jones 6. There Goes Nadine 7. Manitoba 8. Mr. Grieves 9. Whiskey In Your Shoes 10. South Bound Bevy 11. All My Ghosts 12. Wave of Mutilation (U.K. Surf) 13. How You Went So Far 14. Cold Heart of Stone
with Gordon Gano 15. Run
Nice, short and mellow set. Frank, per the ad in the paper, had his Cult of Ray specs on. Highlights: "Crackity Jones" ended slowly, with Frank deepening and slowing the dog barks, as in a tape player slowing down - funny stuff. "All My Ghosts" ended the last chorus a cappella. "Run" with Gordon was... undescribable. But here we go: Frank went wild, all over the stage, screaming the whole song, jutting out over the crowd, falling prostrate, crawling on the stage, gnawing on guitar cords, breaking Gordon's guitar, hooking the mic cord into the bass drum kick, faking a death. Just like them hardcore punk bands! He really was outstanding - people went wild, the highpoint for the evening, by miles. In short, folks: you would have DIED.
Gordon was very very fun, at home with a solid crowd. (I'm not) familiar with his entire repetoire, it all sounded like as-Lou-Reed-has-also-mellowed Femmes-style songs. I left after the "Money" song... what did I miss?
Frank, mid set, made this comment: "Before there was Black Francis, there was Gordon Gano." True true - but on tonight's bill.. Frank opened..

matto, indeed, that was me in the front with my crappy, 5 dollar disposable camera. i'm convinced though that i got some pretty epic pictures. epic i tell you. frank's "run" with Gordon Gano was one of the most insane things i've ever seen him do. i couldn't believe it.. full review to come from me.. i still have to gather my thoughts.. (which are currently muddled by excessive alcohol intake).. but that "run" thing was incredible. i have pictures to prove to any non-believers .. of Frank rolling around on the floor and laying on the front stage speakers, screaming into his mike.
i heard a rumor from the bouncer before the show that PJ Harvey was going to perform with Gano.. so that was somewhat of a disappointment when she didn't..
though "run" was the highlight, you did miss Frank and Dave join Gano at the end for "Blister In The Sun".. which i have to say rivaled that song..
anyway.. more details later.. |

here's my "review" i posted for Frank Black For President. it's not as concise as matto's, but here you go:
Troubador Show, 10/9/02, Gordon Gano plus special guest Frank Black
first, my only complaint was the turn out. i couldn't believe how unpacked it was. don't get me wrong, the crowd that was there was into it, but man, that place was probably like less than half capacity. i think a lot had to do with the fact that Frank was only added last week.. and maybe Gordon Gano doesn't attract a huge crowd on his own. that's the only thing i can think of. because anytime Frank plays in LA it's a sell-out crowd (both in the sense that the venue is sold out, and most of the people there are sell-outs).
that said, the positive side of this was that it felt more intimate. i didn't have to fight to get my place near the front. and even though the crowd was disappointingly small, Frank still gave a top notch, intense performance.
he came out wearing a black tuxedo and sunglasses, with 50's ganster style shoes. the guy knows how to fucking dress when he wants to.
it's always amazing to me how powerful Frank is in a stripped-down format. Dave P. joined in on about half the songs, but the other half he just stood in the background letting Frank do his thing. I have to say, of the recent Pixies songs he's been doing, the semi-new version of Cactus is fucking great.
the new new stuff is brilliant. especially the Nadine song, with Frank doing some crazed yelping.. . you guys are going to love it.
as for the recent album stuff.. i don't know if it's because i'm an emotional wreck lately, or just the fact that the song is so good, but i swear to god hearing South Bound Bevy almost made me tear up. i think that song is one of the most outright emotional songs he's done in a while. am i just a wreck?
anyway, the absolute highlight of the night, as matto already pointed out, was Frank joining Gano for "Run," which is the one Frank sings on Gano's new album (i hadn't heard it yet)..
I was not prepared for this at all.. I remembered hearing that he did some screaming on the song, so I was curious and looking forward to that. But I had no idea..
obviously Frank was in a playful mood because he went fucking crazy on stage. i mean CRAZY.. like i have absolutely NEVER seen him do.. he was doing full-on Iggy Pop / Henry Rollins style stage insanity. i can't even describe it. one second he was laying on top of the front speakers, with his head literally in the crowd.. then he almost tackled Gano and chewed on his guitar (literally).. he was all over the stage. i don't think i can even explain it. i couldn't believe my eyes though.. i think it initially started out in a kind of tongue-in-cheek "i'm going to be classic punk" spirt, but then he got so fucking into it.. it was intense. he actually broke the microphone and i think the stand too.
needless to say, it was a lot of fun. myself and that small crowd were treated to a truly rare thing..
i stayed for the rest of Gano's set because the door guy confided to me that PJ Harvey was going to perform.. but she didn't.
i'm glad i stayed because Frank (and Dave) joined Gano for Blister In The Sun. personally, i've reached my limit for those old Violent Femmes songs.. but hearing Frank sing on it breathed new life into it.
it's fun to see the chemistry between Gano and Frank. i kind of sensed a little affectionate jealousy from Gano.. because i think it was clear that most of the crowd was there to see Frank and not him, even though he was headlining. he was joking with Frank on stage saying things like, "see, Frank is so cool he doesn't even have to look at the crowd" because Frank was facing the back wall as he sometimes does when he's just playing guitar. i think Frank was pretty drunk by that point. before Frank came out for run, Gano was singing one of his songs that was about drinking.. and changed the words to "Frank has had too much to drink" or something like that. .
i had too much to drink too, which is not a good idea when you're by yourself at a bar and you've got a girlfriend. why is it that i always meet really cute, available girls when i'm in a relationship but when i'm single it's not the case? that's for another discussion..

Man! I left 2 songs into the Gano set because I wasn't feeling so hot. So I totally missed the awesome Frank Black spaz-out I just read about. Dammit! I haven't seen him do anything like that for years. Oh well.
Hey Floop I think I was standing behind you during the show. Were you standing to the left (your left) of Frank right in front of the stage? I was one person back from the front in a black shirt and leather jacket. I'm sure I saw a bunch of you guys there but none of you were wearing your official "FrankBlack.net message board handle name tags" so who knows?
Great set from Frank though. It would be nice, though, to see him doing more songs from Devil's Workshop and some of the more poppy songs from BLD.

brian, wow, you're pretty sneaky there. :) man, i have to say, those are EXCELLENT pictures. seriously. not just because they're of Frank, but the moments you captured, and the lighting, and your composition etc.. i hope mine come out well. i wish i had a digital camera. i usually use a disposable if i take pictures, in case security tried to f with me. but then it sucks because you can't change zoom in etc.. i like the close up you got of him strumming his worn away acoustic. you are pretty sneaky. pret-ty sneak-y sis.

matt man,
indeed..
i'll definitely be posting my photos here when they're ready.. but yeah.. durazzo@earthlink.net
so you saw that girl i was next to? i'm telling you, my life is filled to the brim with cruel irony.. because she seemed interested actually.. but of course i'm out of the game at the moment. i guarantee you if i was single it would have been a different story..
i guess the key to girls is, if you can perfect the art of "acting" like you're in a relationship, and coming across as not really bothered, you'll have mastered the secret.
i think girls are too cunning though. they can sense that desparation.. and vise versa, they can sense it when you're all aloof and casual, and THAT'S when they're interested..
what's up with that? |
