I know he still plays on some records and whatnot, but does anybody know why he 'offically' left catholicism? I'm going on a catholics self-titled freak session right now, and I'm just curious about what this madman is up to now, etc..

Sure. He's got a distinct sound and you can tell some of them by listening. I'm a big fan of Lyle's guitar work as I am of all the other Catholic guitarists.
Here's my best guess...Out of State is definitely Lyle's handywork, San Antonio, Texas, The Scene &, Fields of Marigold
Any catholics out there to verify? |

I really miss Lyle cause to me he was the one that make the first Fb&C's such a marvellous album. I think if Lyle had been there on pistolero the album would have been so mucho better (i think that if Lyle hadn't been on 'culto of ray' the whole album would have been ... not that good) . And i'm sure he's the one on San Antone, with that dreamy intro ... I'm not too much into guitar virtuosi cause they're boring but Lyle is quite ok, cause he just fits in Franky's world of unlimited imagination (if FB was a guitar virtuoso, he'd be Lyle), i' mean i don't quite agree that all Frank's guitar players are to be compared to Lyle. LW stands out. Far out. FRANK, SELL YOUR HOUSE, SELL YOUR GUITARS, BRING BACK LYLE FOREVER. |

I don't see anything on LW's site explaining why he left catholicism. We should send him the Spanish Inquisition (nobody expects the Spanish Inquistion) |

I got a chance to talk to the guys after one of their shows earlier this year, and this is what they told me:
Out of State, The Scene and Fields of Marigold are Dave Philips on lead San Antonio, TX is Dave P and Moris Tepper
Just thought I'd pass it along. The guys were all super to talk to by the way. Didn't get to speak with the man himself, though. |

Yep. In another thread, puppaduck (who is "in the loop") confirms that Frank & Dave P are the only guitarists on Out of State.
Welcome, billray.

I'd bet 100 bucks that Lyle plays lead on "Bartholomew." That is totally his sound. Also definitely "His Kingly Cave." The way he uses that wah pedal in the solo, and the rapid tremolo-like effect in the verse. It's Lyle. Perhaps these are the only two he plays on? I don't think he plays on Fields of Merigold, and probably not the Scene. -Derek |

Oh, I forgot about "Are You Headed My Way?" My guess is Lyle on lead. I can't confirm he plays on these 3 songs, but I'm almost positive he does just by listening.

Hmm, interesting. Ok but I was right about Bartholomew so I don't owe anyone 100 dollars. I guess His Kingly Cave does sound a little like Joey Santiago now that I think about it. I wish the albums would have who plays what on each track.

Yes. His Kingly Cave sounds like Joey. I agree. The solo towards the end of that song really reminds me of Joey's guitar in Alec Eiffel. Legitimate? |

I met Lyle after a small acoustic gig Frank played in Los Angeles in December of 2000 (also present were Moris Tepper and Dave Phillips). I was standing out front of the place after the show and Lyle walked out with his guitar in a soft case slung over his shoulder. I told him how cool it was to see him jam with Frank after so long and he politely thanked me. Then we gabbed for a couple minutes and I wound up asking him why he left the Catholics. He replied that he was working towards personal goals, was aimed toward film music, but greatly missed the Catholics. I respected his decision to follow his callings. He's too good to be tied down. He thanked me again (!) for my kind words, shook my hand, and almost comically dissapeared on foot into the foggy black which was devouring Pico Blvd. Thats my story of Lyle Workman.

I emailed him a while ago and asked how long he'd been playing guitar. He said since he was 11.
You know Lyle likes playing with Frank Black more than Ginger Spice or Sheryl Crow.

I'm a newcomer to this site, and was so glad to see that I'm not the only one who misses the guitar work of Lyle Workman. Ofcourse I have great respect for the other gentlemen, after all, Frank recruited them!!! Somehow, Lyle has been able to fire off the perfect lead for each song he's worked on. I too am disappointed they didn't break down the credits on "Devil's Workshop" so we can stop guessing who played what. It's all good...Don't be too critical on Lyle's venture into soundtrack work. Let's not forget Joey's musical credentials include music for the TV show "The World According to Andy Richter". A fine job. |
