Yet another Florida date on the current FB & C odyssey, containing (mostly) the same tunes from the last run of shows, yet as different and distinctive and singular a show as if they were different tours altogether...
First off, if you ever see a listing for a band you like at Common Grounds, grab them as soon as possible, because it's going to be your chance to get up-close-and-personal. The capacity is around 210 (packed in at that) and the stage is only a couple of feet high. I've always said that if I ever hit the lotto, I'd have FB do a gig at my birthday party....catching him here was the next best thing...
The venue is great - very intimate, and kind of funky....owing to it's split venue / coffeeshop identity. I mean, when was the last time FB played a gig at a place that served ice cream? It was slow filling, but very full it became...after Lovering's act (an hour later than they did so at other shows) the band took the stage against the roar of 200 souls packed in close....I was worried that the small size and late start would abbreviate the performance....I need not have worried...
Anyhow, here's the set:
1 Nadine (funny - the crowd was so amped, they didn't care that they'd never heard it.....save for the hardcores who had already caught a few of these FL shows...) 2 Cactus (right into something EVERYONE knows...) 3 How You Went So Far (taking it down a notch....) 4 Sign I was Looking For (new - and V. v. good) 5 Mr. Grieves (predicatably appreciative fan reaction here...) 6 Los Angeles (people quite excited to hear this......they started sweating even harder!) 7 Bullet 8 Southbound Bevy (I can't get enough of hearing this!) 9 Whiskey in Your Shoe 10 All My Ghosts (not played in Orlando or St. Pete....Yesssss!!!) 11 Six Sixty Six 12 Gouge Away 13 New House of the Pope 14 John the Revelator (full screaming rendition....the band was definitely up for this gig...) 15 Monkey Gone to Heaven (less UK surf-y....more Doolittle-y) 16 Beautiful Day / Horrible Day - another one I'm looking forward to hearing in a studio format... 17 Sir Rockaby - awesome.... 18 Holiday Song 19 Dirty Old Town (in honor of St. Pats? It was a wee bit late.....after midnight at this point, but....who's keeping track?) 20 Velvety (it rocked) 21 Hermaphraditos (it also rocked) 22 Crackity Jones (somewhere around here the crowd got totally rowdy, moving around more than I thought possible in such a cramped space....injecting an even greater dose of excitement to the night!) 23 I Want Rock and Roll 24 Black Rider 25 Where is My Mind
As they closed the set, the crowd went nuts.....the band got off stage, but after five minutes of the loudest yelling I've heard or done in many a year, the returned to pacify the mob...
encore 1 Manitoba - the best version of the 5 I've heard so far....FB sans guitar....just bloody belting it! 2 Sister Isabel...An amazing, screaming, yowling cap to an amazing night!
All in all, a splendid evening....great crowd, great performance by the band who, for size constraints had to go without the 2 steel guitars, the keyboards, or Frank's acoustic rig! For those who have seen these shows - we blew out Lovering's candle we were so close!
Though there was barely room for them to move around, but the band rose to the occasion to deliver a performance worthy of a stadium....do not miss this tour....they are in as high a spirit as I have seen....
Anyhow, sorry for rambling tone - Stephensolo and I drove back from Gainesville to Tampa after the show, and here I am at work in St. Pete on an hour's sleep....all apologies for any errors / omissions resulting there from...

"New House Of The Pope" sorta reminds me of "John The Revelator" if you've heard that one. It's a slower bluesy number.

The gainesville show was unbelievable. Period.
David Lovering hung out and did card tricks at the bar for us until 2 am. A very good night... |

I got to be David Lovering's helper. How cool is that? Awesome show. Wish there were lapsteel's like in Orlando, but for the size of the venue, I didnt expect it. Show rocked. Thanks. |

very cool professor. i missed lovering's show in ft. lauderdale so that makes you extra-lucky. i really wanted to make the gainesville show and would've if it didn't sell out in 3 seconds, but i'm not complaining at all. i really can't wait until the catholics go on tour again.
