I was going to start a new round last night, but I got caught up in video games and forgot. Anyway, the lucky loser this time is Stupid Me.
1. Blast Off 2. I've Seen Your Picture 3. St. Francis Dam Disaster 4. Robert Onion 6. Bullet 7. The Swimmer 9. I'll Be Blue 10. Llano Del Rio 11. If It Takes All Night 12. Dog In The Sand
I'll Be Blue can go next. Overall, I think it's harder to pick songs to vote off from this album than from the others.

There may be no 'I' in team, but there's a 'ME' if you look hard enough. |

Dog in the Sand is a cracking album, but when you have to do an elimination you realise how good the album really is...

In loving memory of the song “Stupid Me”
_______ Back ground info:
A love song full of regret and I’m not ~that~ into Frank Black to know who he had previously dated, or who the song might be talking about. I’m not even sure if he’s married. It’s been a while since I’ve picked up the tabloids in a supermarket…
_______ Lyrics:
Stupid me. I deserve it, now I’m standing here all alone. Stupid me. I’m reserving all my thoughts just for her, now she's gone / She gave me her whole heart and I threw it away. I'd practice a black art if I thought she'd come back for just one day / I don't know what became of her, but I’ll pray she'll find true love / Oh, why did I send her away? ______ My thoughts about the song:
It sounds like Frank Black turns innocent, musically. Very simple piano, guitar, and bass parts with a hint of softness. My wife even likes this one. It’s a nice breather from the rest of his songs if you place all mp3’s on random. There’s a pinch of country guitar, but that doesn’t bother me any more. It did as a teenager because I was stubborn, but as I aged I began enjoying the touch of each different sounding instrument.
The structure is introduction, verse, bridge, chorus, middle-eight, verse, bridge, chorus, middle-eight, verse, coda.
The first two lyrics makes me smirk because why would someone ever admit saying “stupid me” to an audience? The lyrics are nice because it’s as if we’re hearing the words of someone who recognizes their own faults and actions within a failed relationship. The bridge has that skip-a-few-beats-FB-sound with a phrasing of 3 ½ measures (14, instead of 16 counts). Afterwards, there is the quick reference of the chorus which is in a totally different key. Then it’s back to the primary key with the slide guitar repeating the melody Frank sings in the verse. I like it when the chorus eventually arrives a second time with a “Oh, why did I send her away?” because he emphasizes it with repetition. It’s the actual questioning of his own actions. The final time has a little more emotion, while the band sporadically accents some of the beats. I’m a little disappointed the song doesn’t end at that point, but instead with a final “stupid me.” Maybe it makes more sense that way since he both begins and ends the song with those two words.
One neat thing I finally noticed about the song after listening to it about 20 times is: although the beginning of the song has that choppy piano sound and also end with the same groove, they’re in different keys. Other words, Intro is in the key B major, while the Outro (coda) is in C major. And then all of the sudden, the band ends on A minor, but the piano keeps it either sounding like a C6 interval or a first-inverted A minor chord. If you ask me, I’d say the pianist messed up with his final chord and then corrected it with the high A. I wonder what he would play, live. Anyway, Frank does well with key changes when "Ana" comes to mind.

"Dog in the Sand" and "St. Francis" are the two best tracks on the album, IMO. I guess "Bullet" must go. |
