| I'll have to boot 'Stupid me' , only for the lack of a better choice. That 'Hermaphroditos' was first is truly stunning. That would be in my top 5... |

In loving memory of the song “Hermaphroditos”
_______ Back ground info:
Hermaphroditos, as he has been called, who was born of Hermes and Aphrodite and received a name which is a combination of those of both his parents. Some say that this Hermaphroditos is a god and appears at certain times among men, and that he is born with a physical body which is a combination of that of a man and that of a woman, in that he has a body which is beautiful and delicate like that of a woman, but has the masculine quality and vigor of a man. But there are some who declare that such creatures of two sexes are monstrosities, and coming rarely into the world as they do they have the quality of presaging the future, sometimes for evil and sometimes for good.
Hermaphroditism: an anomalous condition in humans and animals in which both male and female reproductive organs and secondary sexual characteristics are present in the same individual.
_______ Lyrics:
Hermaphroditos is my name / whatcha playing ? / hermaphroditos is my name / worship me / hermaphroditos is my name / why are you saying / hermaphroditos is my name ? / how do you love me / deeply with your scalpel ? / i got a mouthful / of suicidal drugs / i am a dog / i am a sculpture / you hate my features / you name for a god / forget your yin / and go fuck your yang / it seems that you rang / and it seems I’m only answering / remember when / i was almost ready ? / but it was then / that i was gone already / and i'm still around / but who wants to listen / to my voice in your prison ?
______ What I like about the song:
It starts out with the snare drum on the 1,2,3,4 beats as if it were a march or something to stomp your feet to. When the guitars come in, the beat is undetermined and, surprisingly, the groove comes in together while the snare suddenly becomes the off beats, or the 2 and 4 count to be exact. The chord progressions are grouped into 3 ½ measures (14 beats) which is why I really like Frank Black. It’s not the traditional and predictable.
The structure is intro, chorus, verse 1, chorus, solo 1, solo 2, verse 2, bridge 1, bridge 2, chorus, instrumental conclusion.
I have no idea where Frank Black gets his inspiration for lyrics, whether it be from his college years or a desire to learn about everything, since his topics are very random. The chorus has some repetition but divided with additional lines between “Hermaphroditos is my name.” I love the fact that he rhymes Scalpel w/ Mouthful. Very cool. The suicidal drug reference makes me shudder. I don’t know the history of the competing gods thousands of years ago, but maybe Hermaphroditos was as real as Allah or the other similar proposed gods of today. Also, I think he sings about the what-if you were a hermaphrodite. Being that would probably make you consider suicidal drugs and social rejections as referenced.
The solos in the middle of the song are something to be admired. You’ll hear the first guitar play for several measures and then a ~second~ guitar solo plays while the first solo continues. This produces two solos at once before the next verse begins. Nice and harmonic, with little discordance. If people can pull that off, then they must be very familiar with the correct notes in the scales.
I like the bridge because it’s softer than the rest of the loud and distorted song. It gives you a breather before the band goes to the chorus for the last time. His vocals are rough and even sings some high notes. He’s got attitude just like the accompanied instruments in this rock song. -Kirk

Wow, I don't know how you can possibly think that. (Yeah, yeah, I know it's all subjective blahblahblah . . .) When I first heard Hermaphroditos I laughed out loud because of the juxtaposition of such a perfect Stones homage musically (they finally nailed it!) and then lyrics that couldn't have been written by anyone but Frank. It's a fucking great song. I find Robert Onion kinda embarassing. In fact, I'm deleting my earlier vote for this round. Put me down for: Robert Onion. |

Man! I thought Robert Onion was a dead ringer for one of the more timeless Pixies songs. Hermaphroditos is SO Stones it's ridiculous. |

I must be outta touch with some of the FB fans on this site. On the Pistolero game, "You're Such a Wire" went early, now "Stupid Me" is getting ripped. Also "85 Weeks" went out kinda soon in the FB&C's contest. What's up with Frank's slower numbers always getting dissed? I think his slow songs are some of his best work!?!?
I'll vote for Blast Off. |

Stupid Me and Chpaway boy - hmmm, I don't think it is something against the slow songs, although generally I guess FB fans prefer the harder rockin' stuff. But 'Speedy Marie' won in the Teenager thread, and I would wager my money that 'St. Francis Dam Disaster' will win in the DITS surviver. |
