The building I was living in in Dorchester, MA was evacuated last Thursday night because the landlord was storing tanks of propane, fertilizer, oxygen, oil, gasoline, and 450 barrels of unknown substances in the building. On top of that, the building was not legally zoned for residency. So my girlfriend and I and 15 other "residents" got kicked out on our asses . The landlord is telling the press he had no idea we were all living there which is horse shit. I guess walking into his office to get the mail in my pyjamas and slippers wasn't a big enough clue.
Anyhow, when Jess and I arrived at the building Thursday night, there were Fire Dept vehicles and a Code Violations Police vehicle in the driveway. After telling us what happened, they let us in to the apartment escorted by two cops for 30 minutes to pick up some things. We scrambled around and got some clothes, photo negatives, some archives and the ferrets and left to stay at a friends house leaving at least ten thousand dollars worth of music and recording gear and about 700 CD's there. Luckily a few days later we were let in for 20 more minutes to grab our computers and guitars and shit. So now we're living in a guest room in Cambridge that's about 8x8 with two ferrets and half our belongings until we find a place to live. The room is about 30 degrees farenheit right now and that's probably why I'm up at 1:30AM posting my story. I thought it was interesting enough to pass on. There was an article on the 14th in the Boston Globe that even had our names in it, but you'd need to be registered to read the whole thing.
Anyhow, if any of our beloved Boston area forum members has an inside scoop on an apartment, let me know. We need at least a 1.5 bedroom because I need a room to run my business out of. Thanks - Tim
P.S. - anyone in Somerville can catch me playing solo acoustic every Friday this month at 8PM on Somerville Community Access TV. It was taped live last month.

We are in the middle of getting 12-18" of snow right now. Jess and I were out looking for places in the snow today which worked to our advantage because no one else was foolish enough to try. We found a place in Somerville for the 1st, so we only have to freeze our asses off for another week or so.
As for a lawsuit, the landlord is probably going to file for bankruptcy due to the $1,000 a day fine per violation (I've heard there are at least 25 violations - you do the math.) Since he only technically owes us half a month's rent (although we might be able to justify some mental anguish and reckless endangerment) we won't be suing him. If there's a class action, we might hop on. There's supposed to be a hearing tomorrow that'll probably be postponed due to snow, but I plan on going and making sure they prove he knew all about the people living in the building.
The guy we were subletting from owes us our deposit, and since I don't trust him, I hijacked his JCM-800 Marshall head that he was storing in the apartment to keep as ransom until the check clears. Times like these call for dirty pool. I almost hope he doesn't pay.
Anyhow, thanks for the sympathy and thank you forum for the temporary diversion from my reality. If only I had my FB CD's with me . . .

Ahh . . finally settled in a nice place in Cambridge with broadband internet. Now I have time to work on my pathetic post count.
No mice so far, mere, just the two ferrets who haven't learned where to poop and where not to poop yet.

No shit! Shippensburg, PA? My folks live 10 minutes from the University towards the Blue Mountain entrance to the Turnpike. We should bribe FB to play at Shipp. I remember INXS played there to support Listen Like Theives. I also saw Tears For Fears / Jellyfish there.

Yep, Shippensburg, PA. I probably passed your folks' place on the way home from Michigan today. Is that where you lived as well? I heard Johnny Knoxville attended Ship U. |

Yeah, I lived there for ten years. I went to Chambersburg High School and a lot of my friends went to Shipp. Are you going there? I can't see any other reason why someone would choose to live there. Nice scenery, bad rednecks - that pretty much sums it up.

Haha, you're dead on. I actually moved out here to be in a rock band (The Bennies...opened up for FB this past tour), but I since quit after getting together with the drummer's girlfriend...we've been together more than 1 1/2 years. She went to SU and graduated, and now she's wanting to go to grad school...so she's either getting a scholarship to Penn State and we're moving there, or she's going to SU. I'm not currently going to college, but I'm thinking about getting some computer certifications. |

Next time I'm home I'll let you know and maybe we can all go out to the G-Man for some drinks.

They closed the G-Man, man! I dug that place but my girlfriend didn't like it much anymore, as of late. They had a lot of good food but their prices were a bit steep. They closed it down sometime in the fall, if I remember correctly, and I believe it was due to "ownership disputes." Not sure if they're opening it again or not, but it would be cool if they did, cause it was probably the best local place (I've never gone to Select...Pharos is good, but only if you're drunk and/or stoned at 3AM and want to go eat...never been to the Treat either, even though it's right down the street). |

Definitely hit the "Treat", but only for ice cream. The food there is typical "fried everything" fare. I think I preferred drinking at a place called "Dilly's" in Chambersburg, but most of the time I went to the VFA Legion where my fiance's Dad is a member. You get $1 mixed drinks that are heavy on the alcohol. It was a refreshing change from when I live in NYC and had to pay $7 for a glass of Diet Coke with a teaspoon of Rum in it.
I can't think of any good places to eat. What can Zagat's say about a town where people go to Red Lobster on prom night?
That's sad about G-Man. There was another cool "hippie bar" called The Washington House that was on the corner of 30E and Second street that burned down a few years ago. Now it's mostly redneck, sports, or biker bars. Most of the alternative types just drink in the woods.

By the way, here's the Boston Globe article about the building I used to live in
Dorchester building evacuated
By Stefany Moore, Globe Correspondent, 2/14/2003
Fifteen residents were evacuated last night from a Dorchester building where city inspectors found them illegally living near dangerously stored hazardous materials such as fertilizer and propane gas.
''I'm more worried about this place than a terrorist attack,'' said inspector Jim Kennedy. ''Because this is real. This place could go up in seconds.''
The residents of the commercial building on East Cottage Street moved elsewhere after inspectors found six 32-pound canisters of propane, oxygen tanks, dozens of bags of fertilizer stored near oil and gasoline, and several 450-pound drums of unknown substances.
Inspectors cited Hal Cohen, the owner of the 18,000-square-foot building, with illegally storing the materials, renting out rooms as residences in a commercial property, and building violations.
If a fire broke out, authorities said, they feared that residents would not be able to navigate the maze of hallways in time to escape by the single working exit.
Tim Franklin, 27, and Jessica John, 26, said they were paying $650 a month for a 1,000-square-foot loft in the building and also the building's art studio.
''We're more worried about our stuff,'' said John. ''We don't want to see it go up in flames.''
Cohen said he and a young man were the only residents of the building, which was let to businesses. ''I don't know about anybody else,'' he said. ''They're not supposed to be here.''

I shall check out the Treat this summer, when it's perfect to do so. Actually, come to think of it, I had a banana split from there, but my sister got it for carryout one day. I don't know which bar is the best, but I'll let you know when I turn 21 ;) (this year). Funny story, before I moved out here when I would just come to visit to play gigs with The Bennies, my sister, Jeremy (guitarist/singer/genius of the bennies), and I went to a bar (Mickies? Nickies? the one below King's Inn, next to Towne Cleaners) and they didn't card me because I was wheeling Jeremy in. We happened to sit at a table with an empty bottle which was in front of me and the bartender chick asked if I wanted another. The roof got ripped off that place (King's Inn...parts of the roof ended up in the Subway 'parking lot' across the street, and in peoples' yards across the street) this past summer during this pretty wacky storm. Lots of trees got torn out of the ground, etc. Lots of damage, it was wild. |
