hey guys. i have been thinking hard about whether to post this or not because usually when people post contraversial topics on the board it ends up descending into slagging matches.
so i ask you this - honest opinion on the iraq situation.
being irish (we are meant to be neutral) we only get the opinions of the american and british press and politicians - but never the average american voter.
i would genuinely appreciate an honest answer from you guys about what you think.. pro or con. i would also urge people who reply to this to not resort to name calling or childish crap please!
thanks

I honestly don't know anyone, from my family to my friends to my students to the checker at the Wal-Mart who thinks that this war is a necessary thing. I live in a very poor state, and most of what I hear here is that people are much more concerned about the shitty state of the economy; all this war talk is perceived as a strategy to distract us from domestic social problems. I personally have a fairly fatalistic attitude about it. |

The problem is (as you can see by my other posts) we just don't get the truth.
No one needs to have chemical or biological weapons. No one needs to have nuclear weapons. No one needs to have any weapons of MASS destruction.
The problem occurs when somebody is using weapons like this or giving some shadow organization the means to use weapons like this in order to enforce their own will.
The U.S. has weapons like this to bend others to their own will. The US does NOT like when countries that they disagree with fundamentally has these weapons as well.
We are going to war with Iraq because they want to see the US defeated and will use any means necessary and any shitty terrorist organization out there to harm the US in some way.
The US wants Iraq's weapons like that accounted for and they aren't complying. The US wants Saddam gone. It will happen, no ifs ands or buts. It's already decided. War will happen.
On a basic level, I don't agree with hurting anyone. People (and people on this board) have caused me to want to hurt them badly. I am not proud of that, but I am human. If I don't agree with Abortion as a means of birth control and I don't believe in using the Death Penalty, than I can't really say I believe in anyone killing anybody else.
In the US, they say, you can't just go up to somebody you don't like o have a problem with and punch them in the face. You can go to jail, and get sued and get in a lot of trouble.
So we get pulled back and forth morally. Individually we can't "pre-emptively" punch someone in the face, but our Government can preemptively attack a soveriegn nation till it gets it's way.
However, if I see a guy (or girl) walking around my house with a weapon, I may be justified in beating them or killing them myself in self defense. They were there for the purpose of hurting me or killing me. I just fixed that.
So is this what the US is doing? Is Iraq or those Iraq is funding, sneaking around our house with weapons of mass destruction down it's pants waiting to jump us when we least expect it?
War? Good God, y'all. What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing.

i tend to agree with the swimmer
i am totally against going to war with iraq. they are by no means model earth citizens (their government that is, i have absolutely nothing against their people) and they should not have weapons of mass destruction. that being said, the idea of violence to end violence is a foolish one. i think many americans equate war with iraq to geroge bush going to war with sadaam hussein. there is a big difference. innocent lives on both ends will be lost. i just can't agree with killing innocents. on top of that, if iraq didn't have oil at it's disposal, this wouldn't be half the issue it is. unfortunately, i see war as almost inevitable and i only pray that we can somehow avoid it and take a step towards becoming more civilized world and settle our differences peacefull

I would actually enjoy a Frankie Goes To Hollywood style sawdust ring match a la "Two Tribes Go To War" video.
Georgie Peorgie and Sodom Hussat no holds barred cage match, winner takes all. |

I live in Southeastern Virginia, which has one of the largest concentrations of military personnel and hardware in the US.
Of course there is a great deal of talk going about in the area, but since most of the population is either military or working for an agency supporting the military, the talk seems to center on "We're going to kick some ass"
I can't really cobble together my thoughts very well. So my "opinion" isn't really an opinion. More of a gut feeling, I guess.
...and my gut tells me that none of the kids that I'm watching leave for the Med deserve to wind up face down in the sand a couple of months from now.
I don't think they could even imagine themselves as an invasion force. An occupation force.

I think this war is bullshit. It's going to happen, these past few months with the inspectors and all was just a shirade (sp?), a false justification for going to war. Of course, Saddam is a horrible person who shouldn't be in power. GW shouldn't be in power. We should not be the police of the world. This war is going to last all of one month...our troops are just going to keep the peace. I can bet that there will be very little infantry combat, if any. We'll go in, drop bombs all over the fucking place, assassinate Saddam, and leave. You won't be hearing much of anything about Iraq by Summer. The war will be over. |

I think the whole thing is just sad and I have stopped even listening to the news because it makes me so upset. I don't think war is the answer, not that I pretend to know what is. |

War is not the answer. Only love can conquer hate. You know we've got to find a way to bring some loving here today.

I agree that there is going to be a war, especially after reading the news on the internet about Powells speech supposedly giving evidence that Iraqi officials have met with Al Quaida, and that Iraq are still manaufacturing weapons of mass destruction.
If this is true, then part of me agrees that action must be taken... but then again I have thoughts that if US is allowed to have weapons then surely other countries should be allowed to defend themselves as well. Its a weird situation.... and to make it even more confusing how do we know that the US government isn't just bullshitting the world.
Not sure if some of you know this but some senior US Government officials (Colin Powell - Panama I beleive, Henry Kissinger) are wanted in some countries for past war crimes. I think I heard that Henry Kissinger cannot go to France because if he does he will be arrested.... the strange thing is that this guy won the Nobel Peace prize. Does anyone know if this is true??

America and the uk? What are they apart from proud?
Every country in the world should have an equal say in things. Ideally, all we need is perfection. But since the human track record seems to suck, i think we're all fucked.
Anyway, a war in Iraq may suck. But think of this.
A third of the world may well die of aids within the next hundred years or so. By the time we all die, there may no longer be a third world left to police.
This signature makes me look like i have attitude. The fact is, i don't really know if i do. |

I think Kissenger was summoned to testify about french citizens vanishing in Pinochet's Chile.
