Today's random song of the day is Llano del Rio.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
Llano-Llano

Going out to Llano
Llano del Rio
Try to find utopia
In the stucco grids and the tumbleweeds

You got to love that pearblossom
It’ll kill you just like possum
Have you been to the rock foundations?
Where it''s mostly known just for the speed

Llano-Llano

Going out to Llano
Going out to look for Aldous Huxley
There between the power lines
And the purple flowers of mescaline

If you really want to
You can practice esperanto
But in the land of pronto
The wind it tastes like gasoline

Llano-Llano

Going out to Llano
Llano del Rio

One of my faves on DITS. Very classic, yet so frankblackesque. I'd love to listen to it while driving at sunset on an Oklahoma Panhandle dirt road.

I like this chill song, mostly because of the images that it evokes. There is just a certain placidness about the whole idea of Llano Del Rio

I like the line that talks about Huxley and the purple flowers of mescaline...again, aewsome imagery.

I didn't know the lyric was "stucco grids." Always thought it was "stucco bricks." Do stucco bricks even exist???

Great song about going out to look for peyote.

Can't beat a FB drug song. I think 1826 sounds like a song he wrote AFTER finding the peyote from this song.

Very weird to me that this is the song of the day - I dreamed last night of my husband before he was my husband, who was just back from a stay in the southwest, still strung out on mescaline and peyote and not being very aware of my advances. Maybe it means we need to go on vacation to the southwest soon...

PsychicTwin, the Romans used stucco over mud bricks, so you aren't half wrong the "stucco grids" line is in the liner notes, though. Anyhoo, as far as the grids go, it does make sense when you look closely at the pictures of the llano del rio site today - the walls are all broken down, just leaving squared-off remnants of stucco walls.
Here's an ok picture:

"Wir müssen wissen. Wir werden wissen."/"Our house has seven doors, all are green...except one, which is yellow."

I've never done peyote, though I guess I'm curious to try it... Then again, I've done the psychedelic tango probably one too many times in my earlier years (shrooms and LSD). I like to think that this accounts for my abnormal (stunted?) fashion sense, my general lack of an overall "hair style", my unconventional style of guitar playing...and most of all, THOSE DAMN VOICES IN MY HEAD ARGHHGHG ARGHGHHGHGH

GoddessTheory - yeah, 1826 has an almost shamanic-chant quality to it. Not unlike something that would flow out of a sentient, tripping individual. Good call.

apl4eris -- nice pic... actually, what you said about the Romans covering mud bricks with stucco sounds strangely familiar...

is it easily found growing in that area?

I don't like this song at all. Along with Hermaphroditos and I'll be blue, it's the worst song on DITS. I always skip it when I listen the album.

I was driving from Dublin to Berlin a few years ago with DITS in the deck constantly (tho Brubeck and Johnny Cash got a lookin sometimes). References to Mexico notwithstanding, the record felt pretty perfect for a crossContinent trip.

A good song, but hardly a favorite...am much more taken by it's psychotic twin: San Antonio, TX. Listen to the similarities...as if the latter IS the former but on said peyote!

I don't think that this song has a damned thing to do with peyote. Yes, there is a mescaline flower, but that's not what he's looking for. I always figured it was just about the actual community of Llano del Rio and its ruins--its original occupants were trying to find Utopia. (Frank himself has said that he wrote it after reading City of Quartz.) Anyway, I've always thought of it as one of his "history songs" as opposed to a drug song. Interesting, too, the pear blossom part--the way pear blossoms stink, and also that the Pear Blossom is one of the highways from LA out into the desert.

I love this song. Great for driving.

Yeah I agree with Sarah. I don't think this is a drug song, but it's a great song nonetheless

If you skip a track every time, you never give it the chance to grow on you. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend doing that unless you're speed-listening, so to speak, and only playing the tracks you really like. Personally, I really like LDR. I'm less thrilled by Hermaphroditos, but it's okay.

I agree that the song probably isn't about drugs overall, although it mentions them.
