Black Francis and Pixies will embark upon the last leg of their North American tour starting in San Diego, California on September 27th. In his time off from tour, Frank Black has been hanging out in Easthampton, Massachusetts recording studios Autumn Den and Sonelab, working on brand new material with local musician Jeremy Dubs (of Pixies' "Bagboy"). You can catch the Pixies at the following dates/venues:

I'm guessing it's with Pixies in mind but you never know.

And, if I understand correctly, he will send out more demos in the future.

Good spot, lot's of interesting titbits on that link, especially this one

"We have finally finished putting together the art and text and tracks for the Frank Black And The Cathoics complete recordings box set. Everything has been re-mastered from the original live to 2-track and 1-track recordings. The release contains well over a hundred songs. There will also be a bonus disc of “technical demos” that Ben Mumphrey (who engineered ALL of the mobile recordings) has found recently in his New Orleans recording archive"

You are overdoing it a bit man. If they don't want to record, so be it, at least we know BF will keep pushing on. And the demos are ok, to my ears they are simple and with some promise but it's not like they are clearly epic or anything. The other members may be more picky about what they want to work on. There is a reason people aren't tripping over themselves talking up the demos, because they are just "fine". Especially compared to something Classic Masher which right of the bat sounds catchy and full of potential.

i get what you're saying. but imagining these weird, less digestible songs alongside a few classic mashers is really exciting! for example, women of war is a few notches less catchy than another toe in the ocean, but i'd so much rather be rewarded by the weirder melodies of the former after six plays than have to put up with the immediate un-pixie like radio rock of the latter.

so much of indie cindy is immediate. and outside of the aforementioned toe, most of it rules. but a new pixies album that celebrates the weird some more is probably pretty tantalizing to many. it is to me. open on um chagga lagga, followed by classic masher, then o little cloud...

so cool! just as an aside, one thing these demos really highlight is how cool of a rhythm player Frank is. i hope that's kept central on the new pixies album, whenever that may be.

I think you misunderstand me. I wish the demos were more weird. They are more tame than I would prefer.

Hey, exactly. Replace Another Toe with O Little Cloud, and the whole album gets better :)

The songs are raw and rocking and punk, but a bit demo sounding. They would be Pixies tracks with Joey on them, I don't know what the hold up is. A punk rock Pixies album is what we need.

If the story about the band not being open to writing is true then I'm really disappointed

Thanks for the link anyway.

I actually like Indie Cindy (the album) a lot. It's not flawless, but it's good, sometimes very good. Of course, everything is totally ruined by the overproduction/compression to the point that it's just not listenable at all. That's a fucking shame. But I think everyone here agrees on that.

Paz is just not a singer. So I don't think her voice could be "used" in any way.

Indie Cindy was a solid 6.5/10. It would have been a different album with Kim and less slick. In that link posted there's info about how the demos were written for Kim with her vox in place, the lack of them screwed things up. I think there are a few classic albums in them, but they need to pick up gyre pace to meet Charles output/ work ethic it tease them out.
IBreed Posted - 11/18/2014 : 13:18:51
where can i hear these three demos? thanks.
natenate101 Posted - 11/18/2014 : 13:12:29
I'm not sure why Paz has to sound like Kim? Can't they develop a sound that works with her voice? Guest vocalists could work too.

Those 3 demos seem quite tame to me. I can understand of the others weren't all jazzed up by them. Remember Charles had to win them ALL over in order to make a new album. They went through several phases of demos to get to those finished tracks. Maybe Joey and Dave are being choosy.

Saying Indie Cindy fell flat is a bit off to me. There were many critics, but many reviewed liked it, some loved it, and most fans seem content with it as a first shot out of the gate after so long. The real excitement for most on here seems to be about what comes next?
Helmut Posted - 11/18/2014 : 11:32:32
They need another strong singer like Kim, neither of her replacements come close. Jeremy Dubs comes the closest to sounding like Kim lol. Indie Cindy was a strong set up songs that fell flat, maybe this resonated badly on them?
picpic Posted - 11/18/2014 : 10:34:43
Interesting.

Paz is great, I really like her. Great bass player, great musician & stuff, looks adorable & easygoing. But her singing is just terrible and doesn't fit at all... That's really the only thing that bothers me about her.

Sometimes Joey & Dave are scaring me. They messed up so many times on the last tour, even on simple riffs or drum fills. Just hope it was just from exhaustion.

Anyway, did the 3 other Pixies ever wrote anything on previous albums ? I guess most of the material, even bass lines & drum ideas came from Charles. Except for Joey "scoring" some songs himself (he said he did that for Jaime Bravo, well that was brilliant). But I assume the next album is mainly upon BF's shoulders.

Those 3 demos aren't earmarked as Pixies songs, the planned Eric Drew Feldman sessions plans to include some Pixies demos. I have no idea why the other three don't want to record right now, I suspect they will later as all 4 are happy with the current line up. Maybe an album and a tour a year is a bit much when your pushing 50 (Charles excluded, that's all he does lol) ?
IBreed Posted - 11/18/2014 : 07:07:58
what three demos? what am i missing out on!?!
natenate101 Posted - 11/18/2014 : 06:28:29
A lot of that stuff is already known and not revelatory. The rest seems plausible but I also can't see why Joey and Paz wouldn't want to soldier on with new stuff. Dave has said 1,000,000 times how nice he found the Indie Cindy sessions so not sure why he would be shy to do it again. The weed head thing seems kinda silly.

If BF really wants to take the band in new directions, maybe he needs some new songs because those 3 demos don't sound like they are pushing boundaries or anything. It's hard to believe such gossip but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Helmut Posted - 11/18/2014 : 01:00:34
Yeah I did write it and cbf'ed rewriting it. Pixies will no doubt do stuff down the track with this line up. I'm not privy to why Dave, Joey and Paz don't want to do album #7 since the material is written. Another year touring 12 new songs and 25 year old material would make BF bored considering he writes about 2 solid albums a year. I just don't know why one of these albums isn't a Pixies one. They seemed up for it earlier in the year. Maybe the failure of the album to live up to impossible expectations and the dramas with the Kim's was a bit much?
vilainde Posted - 11/18/2014 : 00:34:14
Did you write that stuff on the other forum yourself? I'm gonna guess you did. Anyway it seems legit and I like to think BF doesn't like the album mix. But I'd be surprised if Dave and Joey really didn't want to record new songs. They certainly don't want the band to disappear again, and I don't see how it could last without new songs. They did that for 10 years but I don't think they could pull it again.
Plus I want to hear some recordings with Paz :)

Charles wants to push the band in new directions musically, the other three are players perfecting their instruments and stage craft happy to tour the same songs.

Anyway the story is here: http://www.soundreliance.com/post/the-pixies-thread-7171233

that's... kind of a bummer. much as i'm sure he wont disappoint, i was really hoping they were going to make a go of the band. i mean, they've got classic masher up their sleeve!

Now Kim is out I'm not sure they need to demo the life out of the next batch of songs. Surely the new line up can hash the songs out in a practice room then go lay them down in a studio, try and keep some semblance of freshness..
Sprite Posted - 09/22/2014 : 04:14:44
Yep agree with that. Indie Cindy feels a little over rehearsed to me. I'd like a more spontaneous approach a la Women of War.
presley1 Posted - 09/22/2014 : 03:55:31
I hope its for a Pixies record, it'd be nicer if he demoed with Joey though

Didn't he say something recently when asked on how he should be addressed that with the Pixies he is Black Francis, away from the Pixies he is Frank Black?
vilainde Posted - 09/19/2014 : 06:36:50
Jeremy said something like "I just recorded an album with Frank Black" on facebook though, so maybe it's something like the Paley&Francis record.
