Kim Shattuck has passed away at the age of 56. Very, very young. She was battling ALS.

I saw her in Pixies in Dublin and it was a great gig. Also a big fan of the live videos of her and BF doing a few songs together.

A little Kim Shattuck appreciation piece on my own website, if you care (no Pixies mentions):

They mention Kim S. [confuse her with Kim D.] and later Pixies and their bassist Eva on the Guitar Nerds podcast.

I have no opinion at all about the band and their management, because we simply don't know what happens behind the stage. But when I read about Kim S stage dive thing and the manager's reaction, I thought for a second about what Albini once said about the band and their then-manager (it wasn't very nice and he later apologized). Is it still the same guy ?

Very sad news about Kim S, I believe she had been still releasing music this year with a new band called The Coolies. She mentions the ALS disease in this interview but doesn't actually say she was suffering from it.

https://ventsmagazine.com/2019/07/11/interview-punk-supergroup-the-coolies-feat-kim-shattuck-melanie-vammen-and-palmyra-delran/

I recall reading an interview where Charles was quite enthused about having Kim S record on future material where she could scream to give him a rest. I imagine if she didn't get on with Dave or Joey that could have caused tension between them all.

With the stage diving / antics stuff I can see where it's coming from. I remember watching Rich Gilbert at a Catholics show where it was hard not to take your eyes off him, he was like Austin Powers on crack with his moves on stage. I don't know if I imagined it or remember it wrong but I have a memory of FB giving him a very long stare that I understood to be somewhat negative.

But then McCaffrey was bouncing around and Dave P would overly posture on a solo so maybe I read it wrong but it was their last ever tour so who knows. Maybe there's a parallel there somewhere.

I'm actually not sure I understand how the manager comes off bad there. I wouldn't want someone doing wacky stage antics in my band. I want to feel I have some control over the show. It seems really un-Pixies like for someone to be stage diving and acting all rock star, it would stick out like a sore thumb at a show. The manager and band's disapproval of it makes total sense to me. Kim seemed like an awesome showman and also a huge personality, and it was clearly a total wrong fit for her to be in the band, I don't think anyone is to blame in anything.

I'm on board with the manager on this one as well. But it certainly was not an unpardonable sin. 3 (4?) bassists in 30+ years is a pretty good record.

Dozens of people spontaneously combust each year, it's just not widely reported.
peter radiator Posted - 10/07/2019 : 08:05:23
It really all comes down to this: if every single one of an existing band's members can't get along really well with whomever is asked to replace a departed member, then that person probably has to go, and they need to find someone they do all get along with really well.

Or else, they're likely just dooming their own band to eventually split in an ugly way.

Kim Shattuck was GREAT at what she did, but what she did was not particularly geared toward being the bass player in the Pixies.

Look at how much wonderful stuff / performances / recordings / moments now seem commonplace within the band since they found just such a bassist!

And yeah, the manager wasn't being a dick.

He was stating the obvious: Pixies don't stage dive.

It was a fun and loopy move on Shattuck's part, but it spoke volumes about how her perspective on the boundaries between performers and audience members were in some ways almost diametrically opposed to those of the band she had just joined.

That's who she was and it was never who they were. Not stage diving per se, but that type of "sweaty house party" DIY punk-rock show vibe.

She made a mistake, and it was their guy's job to make it clear that she needed to temper those inclinations while she was in their employ.

Always made perfect sense to me.

Heh yeah the manager came across really bad during all of that. Good to read Shattuck confirming the album title was a reference to what Charles said, which I thought was pretty obvious but some here thought it was a coincidence.

Kim Shattuck's death is so sad, sudden and unfair. She was awesome. I've been listening to the Muffs for over twenty years and will be listening to them for the rest of my life. Shattuck was a real master at perfect, unpretentious pop songs that rip apart dumb guys and dumb girls and sometimes herself. As I get older, I have a little collection of role models for how to age well and she is one of them. Her song "Really Really Happy" is a great anthem, in my world. for getting older and comfortable in your own skin.

It was SO odd to see her in the Pixies briefly. She didn't fit in there at all. It was a job and she enjoyed it while it lasted, as she's said in interviews, so good for her.

But still, yeah, it was odd.

First of all, she's a great frontwoman in her own right. Her playing bass in someone else's band is like Mick Jagger playing bass in someone else's band. It was strange on that level. Not that I hold it against her in any way. It was a job. No big deal.

And yeah, her personality wasn't a good fit for the Pixies' cultivated aloofness.

I'll never forget the anecdote about the time that she stage-dived at the end of a show and then the band's management afterward told her to never do that again. "For my own safety?", she said. "No, because the Pixies don't do that," said the management. It was a little piece of insight into how careful the band is about their image.

I always thought it was Joey who took issue with Kim, no reason just never imagined it was Dave even though that would make more sense musically.

Another interesting quote from this one::

"How was your relationship with Charles?
Charles was amazing! He took me to museums and included me in everything. He was my advocate until the very end, so I’m not mad at him, I completely understand – my personality wasn’t meshed with theirs in the exact right way, I get it."

Honestly it's nice to hear her and Frank got along. I had always liked those videos of the two of them playing together, they seemed to be having such a great time.

Weird to imagine Dave being so weird about her, he seems like the most affable member of the band. He's practically a normal human! Maybe that's why.

Plenty of Pixies info, not all flattering, in this article about Kim S

This was before Kim D departure was announced.
Shattuck was BF choice apparently (i've heard him said that in a recent interview). Shattuck was probably already picked as the new bass player when this took place.

What the hell? What is the context of this? This is really bizarre. Frank's smiley happy performance, I've never seen him look like he's having fun during a Pixies performance. What is this?

I know that I bought tickets for the first Paris concert in 2013, and liked the gig so much that I went back the next day. It felt great to see them rocking after years of playing the same tired Doolittle shows, plus the setlist was heavy on Bossanova and Trompe songs. Shattuck was full of energy. Great memories.

Would love any links to some good performances with her. Seems like she was too wild and rocking for the Pixies, which is kind of strange and funny to put it that way. Pixies to me feel more like these blue collar guys punching in and rocking the house and leaving, Kim seems like she lived for rock. I know nothing about her, this is just based on the handful of clips I've seen, of course.

I adore this video of Kim with Frank and Joey and Dave. She was great. I thought these were great shows, even though it was maybe a weird time for the band. Got to see her with them in 2013. Great energy. So sorry to hear of her passing.

The first thing I thought when I read the band's statement where they didn't specify which Kim was - "Oh shit, that's gonna cause a hell of a lot of people to jump to the wrong conclusion!"

Oh shit. Sad news... :-/
I wonder if we'll hear something from the band.
BF explained recently Shattuck was his choice, but it didn't work out. I think her backing vocals were quite good with the Pixies.

Amen to all the above.

Saw the band with her on bass in Manchester and it was a magnificent gig.

I just learned the news and am quite in shock. I only learned about her when she joined the Pixies, and saw her twice with them in concert and I loved them. Listening to the last Muffs record right now, I wish I had known the band before. RIP
