What with the 3 new songs being played regularly in the most recent live shows, I thought it'd be good to have specific threads to talk about each one. Lyrics/thoughts/impressions/etc.

GRAVEYARD HILL (aka The Witching Hour, members of the band's crew have confirmed to a couple people that the song is actually named Graveyard Hill)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9DREvvlM3M

LYRICS (as best as I can make out)

And when the moon grows smaller
Donna picks out a flower
Gives her a witchy power
In the witching hour
In the witching hour

Donna taking a potion
Eating all my devotion
Fucking up my emotion
In the witching hour
Donna picks out a flower
In the witching hour

On the graveyard hill she's calling out her curse
I'm taking my last breath with each chapter and each verse
and soon I will be killed

In a poisonous forest
Donna lighting her torches
Her eyes are flying saucers
Her hair is black and gorgeous
I see her down at the crossroad
She could lead me to madness
She taking me into darkness
In the witching hour
In the witching hour
In the witching hour

On the graveyard hill she's calling out her curse
I'm taking my last breath with each chapter and each verse
and soon I will be killed

On the graveyard hill she's calling out her curse
I'm taking my last breath with each chapter and each verse
and soon I will be killed

Yes soon I will be killed

I'm with you. I checked out after Podcast #7 as I was getting the feeling I was going to think some bits sounded better on the Podcast than the record (e.g. Catfish Kate instrumental bit, I thought that was going to be the end of the song on the final cut).

I still plan to listen to podcasts 7-12 but only once the albums and demos are fully nestled within my brain.

I should add my gripes are minor. I had many more on IC and HC.

Beastie Boys rhymed commercial with commercial

Yes, Kate and Kate does stick out, but the growly/discordant vocals during the refrain might be one of my favourite things about Graveyard Hill.

Gotta say Graveyard Hill and Catfish Kate rank 11 and 12 for me on the record. They are the only 2 where I would elect to change something.

On Graveyard Hill I would re record the first two verses and get rid of this growly thing which just sounds weird (not 'good' weird)
On Catfish I would get rid of the Kate-Kate rhyme and turn Joey's guitar up.

I wouldn't touch anything else though, it's prefect already!

It’s funny, when this was a single I was like “this song is pretty good!” But now listening to it within the album I’m like “this song is fantastic!”
tamefan Posted - 09/17/2019 : 08:52:27
Does anyone else think the tempo is too slow? I boosted it by 8% in audacity and the bass is much bouncier now.

Thankyou, and fuck this. Every time I get fit and sporty I end up in hospital with broken bones, or disolocated shoulders. This has only happened under the infuence of alcohol 50% of the time so far in my life. I've ran out of stamina for physiotherapy, but I'm half way there. No chance of getting to the top of a hill until at best the fall now. Best summer ever last year and I spent it making up mounted prints of my art work to sell for practically fuck all to people. The previous 9 months was walking 5-10 miles every day and doing wieghts and i lost 3 stone (again) I injured my same ankle skipping I think, and it hurt and I sprained it so that might have been a cause of my injury too, an already injury. I fucking try my best, but every time prohibition trips me up in some, indirect way. I (try to) use pot in the context of not only partying, but serious atheltic exercise and yoga. And now I am walking like an old man with a stick because I got drunk and went looking to score some weed at a scooter rally full of mods and skinheads.

I digress.

Congrats to at least one of my 5 favuorite all time Pixies records, woohoo

Woah, best wishes for a speedy recovery

I'm suffering from thing survivor fatigue currently, and I just got my leg back again (fully fitted with a titanium bone machine)

I now walk like an old man, and have to learn to walk again. I tripped over a tent peg at a festival 7 weeks ago and fractured my ankle, then got up drunk and tried to walk on it and then fell back down on the ground and split my lip open, and then hopped home and started drinking again until the ambulance turned up and took me to hospital. Still can't really remember. So I fucked my entire summer, happy solstice 2019 and no hillwalking for me again for a while..

I just hosted Bass player survivor in my head and Kim won (you know which one) and I don't know the name of any of the male ones.

Pot, you can host the next game here on the forum:

Bassist survivor

Include all bassists FB ever played with
pot Posted - 06/20/2019 : 07:57:40
I just realised the bassline to this is more or less the bass line to Debaser, only upside down/inverted. Know whatta mean?

Still enojying listening to the rocking Trompe-esque anthem chorus and outro though, but I think the bass let's the song down. It's too fucky aboutery, this style of indie music is all about the minimalism. There is no need to show off because you can play complex bass solos if you're in an indie band. Any more than 3 bass notes and you risk "playing Cannonball".

I don't hate Paz. This issn't a hate Paz thing, it's just my objective opinion. Paz has some pretty big shoes to fill, and for the greater part she is doing a grand job. Hopefully I can get to see Pixies 2.0 play live some day.

It's a small number of people who will be able to say they were there for the Shattuck era, but nobody really cares? I think in all honesty Shattuck had a more decadent rock n roll persona that I liked better, but Paz was the more professional and reliable choice.

Not the case for Graveyard Hill.

2.0 stuff is more standard verse-chorus-verse including Graveyard Hill.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the only little outro was on Talent (IC).

His songs used to have many of them (before 2.0 at least). Multiple ideas on a song. Kind of miss those.
Stevio10 Posted - 06/13/2019 : 07:47:24
The synth part towards the end of the song
combined with the vocals reminds me slightly of the Alec Eiffel outro
picpic Posted - 06/13/2019 : 05:06:28
Very subjective anyways.
Looking at the comments on the Graveyard Hill Youtube video, it looks like the song/production is highly appreciated. I only spotted 1 bad comment -not mine I swear- about the bad backing vocals (but I confess i clicked "Like" on it)

Thanks picpic, and your English is perfect, it’s my ears that are faulty I suppose as I cannot quite discern the difference.

I’ll keep listening for it
picpic Posted - 06/13/2019 : 01:24:50
Is my english that bad ?

I was just pointing that Dave snare drums sound flat/muffled since 2.0 (since IC I think) . Compared to his trademark "bright" snare sound from 1.0. From IC onwards, he adopted a new drumming style (traditional grip, like this: http://rog2156852.blogspot.com/2015/02/entry-6-matched-or-traditional-grip.html).

Listening to the bare drum track, its incredible how flat Dave snares sounds. That’s probably one of the things I dislike the most since IC and the way Dave changed his drumming technique.

Has this version been posted before? It's great, you can really hear the rhythm guitar chords well.

Eff that, I watched the link above. Sounds great and I love his inflections on the vocals. Hoping for less straightforward crooning from BF, give me some snarls and yelps and such. Love the second verse.

This one is stuck in my head. I'm not watching the video anymore so I don't tire of it. Great song.
